The main objective of this study was to develop a system to determine energy saving in the industry. This was achieved through an integrated model of index decomposition analysis, an artificial neural network, and data envelopment analysis. Index decomposition analysis is used to understand the contribution of the factors responsible for energy consumption. These factors are inputs to the artificial neural network to predict the baseline energy consumption. The energy saving is finally determined through data envelopment analysis. The results showed that the integrated model presents a reasonable amount of energy saving in the building and construction industry.","PeriodicalId":404746,"journal":{"name":"The South African Journal of Industrial Engineering","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132233314","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Naturally, this degrades their state, and can lead to premature breakdowns and production losses. Condition-based maintenance (CBM) is a strategy that plans maintenance schedules depending on the condition of the equipment, and aims to improve decision-making processes. Data collected from machinery for CBM purposes must be reliable to avoid negative impacts on the maintenance strategy. Data reliability can be estimated by comparing multiple data streams; however, they are not always available, and can be expensive. This study aims to estimate the isolated and contextual reliability of single-source CBM data by applying multiple data analytics techniques. An application is designed to analyse current data on a machine level and to determine combined reliability. A case study implementation shows the difference in reliability classification accuracy between the isolated and contextual methods, highlighting the need for them to be combined.","PeriodicalId":404746,"journal":{"name":"The South African Journal of Industrial Engineering","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130582719","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This may be caused by ’failure demand’; however, its definition is inadequate for a complex hierarchical system. Although accounting for a significant proportion of load in other industries, the academic assessment of failure demand in health care remains limited. We present a novel way of identifying repeat consumption, which we loosely equate with failure demand. We present a framework that can be used to identify ‘system failure’, the trigger for later repeat consumption. This provides new insight into understanding whether common events represent system failure. A diagnostic framework was developed from observations, the literature, and brainstorming. Commonly observed exit scenarios in health care were tested against the framework to create a system-failure list. The framework and the categorisation table were shared with eight international Lean health-care experts. Following feedback, the framework and categorisations were fine-tuned and consensus was achieved via member-checking. Identifying and managing failure demand for these settings can lead to a reduced system load, thus reducing costs and increasing system efficiency and quality.","PeriodicalId":404746,"journal":{"name":"The South African Journal of Industrial Engineering","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130360184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Firms controlling these resources hold excessive power over others. This study adopted resource dependence theory as a theoretical lens to explore the role of relationship power in supply chain sustainability practices between a South African private healthcare provider and its suppliers. The study employed a generic qualitative single-case study design. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from 12 participants at various levels of the case organisation’s hierarchy. The main findings revealed several types of environmental and social practice used in the supply chain of the private healthcare provider. Some of the environmental practices were effective waste management and recycling, while the social practices included supplier selection and periodic reviews. The healthcare provider exercised extensive power over its suppliers to implement these practices. By exploring the advantages and disadvantages of sustainability practices, the findings showed that relationship power acted as a driver of supply chain sustainability. Mutual commitment, continuous communication, and training support these practices. Healthcare managers must be aware of the importance of relationship power for supply chain sustainability practices implementation, and are advised to invest time and effort in building buyer—supplier relationships to aid sustainability. This study expands the literature on relationship power in supply chain sustainability practices in an underexplored developing country healthcare context.","PeriodicalId":404746,"journal":{"name":"The South African Journal of Industrial Engineering","volume":"8 11","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120924580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A good automated storage system can maximise space and shorten shipments’ response time, thereby helping the company to adapt quickly to an ever-changing market. For many enterprises there is also an urgent need to establish and install ASS. However, many companies find it difficult to design and install the right ASS. Many considerations need to be examined in choosing a suitable ASS, given their various capacities and capabilities. This study aimed to employ the UNISON framework to present a comprehensive model for selecting the most suitable ASS. It identified two fundamental objectives in the ASS selection process: (1) choosing the most suitable design for ASS; (2) choosing the most competent vendor to build and implement the ASS. This study then broke the fundamental objectives down into more detailed mean objectives and attributes. After defining the mean objectives and attributes, the study created a key performance indicator to assess the selection process. An empirical study was conducted among small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) in Taiwan to validate the proposed framework. A qualitative study was then developed by interviewing three related stakeholders — the vice president, the head of the production department, and the senior engineer — to support the identification process in selecting and implementing the ASS. From this case study, we found that our ASS selection model showed good practical viability.","PeriodicalId":404746,"journal":{"name":"The South African Journal of Industrial Engineering","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124424800","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study was to identify a course of action to overcome the factors affecting customer experience during product development. The research setting was a leading telecommunications firm in South Africa. A quantitative approach was undertaken through an online survey questionnaire. A sample of 120 individuals participated in the study. The findings indicate that system capacity takes precedence over customers. There also appear to be concerns with the significance of the roles of change management, customer experience, and project management functions in product development. It is stressed that customers need to be more actively involved, that an efficient change management tool should be adopted and socialised, and that the principles of the strategic transformation programme management process should be considered.","PeriodicalId":404746,"journal":{"name":"The South African Journal of Industrial Engineering","volume":"107 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123982958","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through an analysis of the economic, accuracy, environment-friendly, and functional and physical interactivity principles, this study applies the fuzzy cluster method (FCM) to analyse the modularity of the components to be assembled. It establishes the correlation matrix between the parts, from which a module division scheme is obtained. In 2001, the Customs and Excise Act was amended to allow rebates for qualifying diesel users. The rebate aims to protect the international competitiveness of the South African mining industry. One of the key requirements for the diesel rebate is to submit logbooks that are compliant; however, the mining industry is struggling to maintain accurate logbook verification. Failure to comply with logbook requirements has prevented eligible mines from benefitting from the rebate. This paper presents a stepwise methodology to support the values reported in logbooks and submitted to the South African Revenue Service (SARS). The methodology focuses on four issues of data quality: data measurement, data verification, data traceability, and data reporting. With this approach, 151 errors were identified and corrected in a case study. A compliant logbook is shown to be the first step towards improved diesel management.","PeriodicalId":404746,"journal":{"name":"The South African Journal of Industrial Engineering","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123680482","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research field was later extended into prominent application areas, including finance, energy, and production planning. During the 1970s, stochastic programming was first applied in the marketing industry. Interest in this field grew exponentially during the early 2000s, and was identified as one of the most promising future research fields for optimisation. Stochastic programming is an asset for the following world researchers due to its uncertainty calculation. This paper aims to identify and evaluate all existing stochastic programming models in the literature in the retail industry. First, a historical overview of marketing models is provided, with a specific focus on stochastic optimisation. Second, all stochastic programming model applications in the retail industry are identified by conducting a systematic literature review. Last, potential gaps for future research opportunities are identified to help retailers to improve their marketing strategies.","PeriodicalId":404746,"journal":{"name":"The South African Journal of Industrial Engineering","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123344118","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is not an entirely new development, as there has been a growing recognition and adoption of user-centred themes and terms such as co-design and human-centred design, among others. The ways of ‘doing’ such practices are becoming well-documented and presented through various tools and techniques; however, what kind of ‘being’ supports this? The paper reviews indigenous research methodologies (IRM) to propose the dimensions of a more relational framework of design. It reviews the 4Rs of indigenous research methodologies to propose five areas (expanded into eight dimensions) for a more relational framework of design. These dimensions can also support a way of ‘being’ that can guide the approach towards more co-creative thought and practice when ‘doing’ design. These dimensions can further support efforts to understand and to develop approaches that respond to the decolonisation and indigenisation of the design process.","PeriodicalId":404746,"journal":{"name":"The South African Journal of Industrial Engineering","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121275337","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
