Gewiss, einzelne Texte sind zu Berühmtheit gelangt: Novalis’ Monolog etwa, auch Friedrich Schlegels Über die Unverständlichkeit oder sein Buch Über die Sprache und Weisheit der Indier. Nicht zuletzt die zeichentheoretischen Überlegungen, die Novalis am Beginn der sogenannten „Fichte-Studien“ anstellt, haben die Aufmerksamkeit zahlreicher Interpreten auf sich gezogen. Aber man scheint diese Texte vor allem für einzelne, okkasionelle Äußerungen zu halten. Zumindest ist man von der Erschließung des sprachphilosophischen Zusammenhangs, in dem diese Äußerungen stehen, weit entfernt. In den meisten Darstellungen zur Geschichte der Sprachphilosophie werden die Frühromantiker nur am Rande oder gar nicht erwähnt.2 Ein Grund für die Vernachlässigung der frühromantischen Sprachphilosophie ist, dass man ihr die Eigenständigkeit abspricht. Noch vor wenigen Jahren sind zwei Aufsatzsammlungen erschienen, in denen man die Ansicht vertrat, dass die Frühromantiker in allem, was sie zur Sprache zu sagen haben, von Johann Gottfried Herder abhängig seien.3 In diesem Zusammenhang wurde gelegentlich auch auf den Einfluss der englischen Sprachphilosophie hingewiesen. So hat Hans Aarsleff in seiner wichtigen Arbeit The Study of Language in England, 1780–1860 nicht nur den „profound influence“ geltend gemacht, den „Lowth, Harris, Monboddo, and several others exercised in Germany“;4 er hat auch in","PeriodicalId":40371,"journal":{"name":"Angermion-Yearbook for Anglo-German Literary Criticism Intellectual History and Cultural Transfers-Jahrbuch fuer Britisch-Deutsche Kulturbeziehungen","volume":"10 1","pages":"37 - 66"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2017-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1515/anger-2017-0002","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49257949","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Known as the “Congo blind barb,” this fish lives in caves in the lower Congo. Now classified as “vulnerable,” one notch below “endangered,” the species has approximately seven thousand remaining members. Sold as an “aquarium novelty,” it is often exported to industrialized countries such as the United States.1 As its Latinate designation suggests, its commodification is an outcome of European colonialism in the Congo. The projection of “blindness,” which implies a defect, onto this highly adapted being provides us with an illustration of the “blindness” to which Homo sapiens frequently succumbs. Goethe, in Faust (1808, 1832), brings this foible to light. To the famulus Wagner’s assumption that epistemological certainty is possible, the scholar Faust retorts, “Was ihr den Geist der Zeiten heißt,/ Das ist im Grund der Herren eigner Geist,/ In dem die Zeiten sich bespiegeln” (“What’s called the spirit of an age/ is in the end the spirit of you persons/ in whom past ages are reflected”).2 Hence, Europeans are assumed to have “discovered” beings such as Caecobarbus geertsii, in this case, the Belgian-British zoologist George Albert Boulenger, whose documentation of the fish in 1921 brought it into a cognitive realm of existence that amounts to a container of sorts, limited in the terms in which the fish is conceived. Chinua Achebe seems to perceive this sort of problem when he argues that Joseph Conrad is a “racist” in Heart of Darkness (1899). The Nigerian novelist contends that “this simple truth is glossed over” in the critical reception of the novel","PeriodicalId":40371,"journal":{"name":"Angermion-Yearbook for Anglo-German Literary Criticism Intellectual History and Cultural Transfers-Jahrbuch fuer Britisch-Deutsche Kulturbeziehungen","volume":"10 1","pages":"103 - 130"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2017-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1515/anger-2017-0005","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42167036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As professor of English Philology occupying the prime position in this subject in Berlin (from 1895 to 1923), he had a distinct place in the German higher education system that made him highly influential at a governmental and academic level. Moreover, the presidency of the German Shakespeare Society, a post he held for 20 years, made him a representative of the German nation across the channel in Great Britain and beyond. Born in St. Nikolas near Innsbruck in Austria in 1855, he lived through a particularly turbulent era in which he dedicated his life and work to English language and literature. As an academic Brandl achieved great distinction. His first major work after his PhD2 was a book on Coleridge.3 This and his book on Shakespeare4 were the works which won him most respect in his lifetime. At only 40 years of age, he was appointed to the chair of English philology at Berlin University, the top position in this subject at the time in Germany. Patrick Bridgwater argues: “rarely can a translation of a modern œuvre have exercised such powerful influence on so many important writers”.2 None of the translations in Levy’s English Nietzsche edition is by Levy himself (although he was translating two of Benjamin Disraeli’s novels into German at the same time);3 instead, in addition to negotiating the rights, corralling the translators and financing the edition, he proselytised for Nietzsche in his own writings through introductions and other essays. These certainly had the desired effect of winning readers for Nietzsche and raising awareness of the recently deceased German philosopher at an otherwise highly sensitive period of Anglo-German relations in the lead-up to the First World War. At the same time as Levy was promoting Nietzsche, though, he was not doing him any favours in the longer term by aligning him with various other causes which were dear to him personally, attaching Nietzsche’s name to his own dubious political programme. In this essay I want to examine Levy’s Nietzsche more closely by focussing on one of the less prominent – but none the less symptomatic – among his Nietzsche essays, his introduction to Nietzsche’s late autobiographical text Ecce homo.","PeriodicalId":40371,"journal":{"name":"Angermion-Yearbook for Anglo-German Literary Criticism Intellectual History and Cultural Transfers-Jahrbuch fuer Britisch-Deutsche Kulturbeziehungen","volume":"10 1","pages":"131 - 146"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2017-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1515/anger-2017-0006","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46331610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
