Uurimuse keskmes on kõik lapse finiitverbi konstruktsioonid, nende jagunemine isikuti ning verbi tähendustüübiti, vähemal määral pronoomenid, mis neis konstruktsioonides esinevad. Kõige rohkem esines lapse kõnes ainsuse kolmanda isiku finiitverbi konstruktsioone, mõnevõrra vähem esimese ja hoopis vähem teise isiku konstruktsioone. Finiitverbi konstruktsioonid omandab laps eri tähendusi väljendavate verbide põhjal esimeses ja teises isikus erinevalt: kõigepealt hakkab laps rääkima enda soovidest ja tegevusest ning kõige viimasena arvamusest, teise isiku puhul kasutab laps alguses kognitiivseid protsesse tähistavaid, seejärel tegevust märkivaid verbe. Teise isiku konstruktsioonides esinevate verbide omandamisjärjekord kattub suures osas Wellmanni ja Liu (2004) esitatud meeleseisundite komplekssuse skaalaga. Abstract. Reili Argus. I want but you look. The acquisition of different verb classes and personal pronouns in Estonian. The article gives an overview of the acquisition of the person category, i.e. both personal pronouns and verbs occurring with them, in Estonian on the basis of spontaneous speech data (20 hours in total) of an Estonian child (age 1;4–3;0). The main goal of the study is to examine how first-person constructions differ from second- and third-person constructions concerning the semantics of a verb. All verbs in 1SG and 2SG are divided into semantic classes (actions, states, desires/ wishes, beliefs, knowledge, emotions, sensory perception) using the division based partly on Wellmann’s and Liu’s (2004. Scaling of theory-of-mind tasks. Child Development 75(2). 523–541) scale of complexity of mental states. Third person constructions form the biggest part in the child’s speech, the amount of first person constructions is smaller in some extent and second person constructions were used with lesser frequency. The child acquires different verbs in different person constructions: first the child starts to talk about his own desires and actions, the verbs for knowing and emotions emerge late. In the second person constructions, the child first uses verbs denoting cognitive processes, then emerge verbs for actions. The order of acquisition of verbs in second-person constructions largely coincides with the scale of increasing complexity of mental states provided by Wellmann and Liu (2004).","PeriodicalId":40321,"journal":{"name":"Eesti ja Soome-Ugri Keeleteaduse Ajakiri-Journal of Estonian and Finno-Ugric Linguistics","volume":"112 24","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135136935","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The material for the research comes from the collection of spontaneous speech samples recorded in the 21st century. All the examples are published for the first time. The article presents mainly a qualitative analysis and aims at overviewing the basic functions of the Ingrian demonstrative pronouns tämä and še. It is shown that in the contemporary Ingrian the demonstratives are used as deictic and anaphoric devices, and also as discourse markers. Individual speakers demonstrate differences in the use of these pronouns due to the contact influence from the neighbouring languages. Kokkuvõte. We study the use of insubordinate relative clauses (RCs) in two corpora, the Arkisyn corpus of contemporary Finnish conversation and the Agricola corpus from the 16th century. Our main findings are that the construction is put to very similar uses in the two corpora, but that it is more common in the newer corpus. We show that insubordination of RCs existed along with subordination already in the earliest records of Finnish language use. Thus, insubordination of RCs is not a more recent development than their use as subordinate clauses. We conclude that the more frequent use in the newer data is likely not a result of a process of grammaticalization that would have occurred since the 16th century. Kokkuvõte. Siinses artiklis käsitleme insubordinatsiooni ehk teiste sõnadega selliseid lauseid, mis loetakse tüüpjuhul kõrvallauseteks, kuid esinevad ilma pealauseta. Uurime soome keele relatiivlauseid, millel puudub pealause. Keeleainestik pärineb kahest korpusest: tänapäeva soome kõnekeelt sisaldavast korpusest Arkisyn ja 16. sajandi keelenäiteid sisaldavast korpusest Agricola. Meie tähelepanekud näitavad, et mainitud konstruktsioon esineb mõlemas keelekorpuses, kuid uuemas ainestikus on selle kasuta- mine tavalisem. Osutame oma uurimuses, et nii insubordinatsioon kui subordinatsioon esinevad juba varajastes soome keele tekstides. Seega ei ole ilma pealauseta relatiivlause kasutamine uuem keelenähtus kui pealausega relatiivlausete kasutamine. Meie uurimus näitab, et insubordinatsiooni sagedasemat esinemist uuema keeleainestiku relatiivlausetes ei peaks tõlgendama 16. sajandist alates arenema hakanud grammatikaliseerumise nähtusena.","PeriodicalId":40321,"journal":{"name":"Eesti ja Soome-Ugri Keeleteaduse Ajakiri-Journal of Estonian and Finno-Ugric Linguistics","volume":"110 27","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135136502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Kuidas nii interrogatives are analysed as surprise questions, expressing the speaker’s surprise with regard to an unexpected situation verbalised in the prior turn and the speaker’s request for an explanation. In combination with the particle nii (‘so’), the wh-word kuidas (‘how’) has always a why-like use. These interrogatives are analysed as mixed speech acts featuring both exclamative and interrogative properties that appear to different degrees depending on the context. The two main discourse functions identified in the corpus foreground one of these components: clarification request with a high asking force and denial/disagreement with a more prominent exclamative component related to the speaker’s attitude. The study of translations reveals a great affinity between French comment ça and kuidas nii. Kokkuvõte. Anu Treikelder: Kuidas nii, kalapulki?! Ühest üllatusküsimusest eesti keeles. Koos partikliga nii on küsisõnal alati põhjuslik, küsisõnaga miks sarnane tähendus. Artiklis uurime, milliseid eesti keelekogukonnale omaseid sotsiaalseid norme ehk sotsiopragmaatikat märkavad ülikoolis vene dominantkeelega üliõpilased. Analüüsime suhtluskeele valikut ülikoolis ja seda mõjutavaid tegureid ning mitmekeelsete suhtluspartnerite eestikeelse suhtluse pragmaatilisi aspekte (sinatamine, teietamine ja muud pöördumisvormid, vältimisstrateegiad). Empiirilised andmed pärinevad kahest autorite poolt Tartu Ülikoolis kogutud andmestikust: vaatlusandmed ja intervjuud üliõpilaste keelevalikute kohta ning intervjuud nende keelelisest ja kultuurilisest kohanemisest ülikoolis. Meetodina kasutame kvalitatiivset deduktiivset sisuanalüüsi. Leidsime, et vene dominantkeelega tudengid tajuvad ülikooli keskkonnana, kus läheb vaja formaalset keelekasutust, samuti rõhutavad nad eesti- ja venekeelses suhtluspragmaatikas pöördumisvormide lahknevust. Abstract. Birute Klaas-Lang, Kadri Koreinik, Kerttu Rozenvalde: From school to university: What cultural differences in communication do Russian-dominant students notice at the University of Tartu. The University of Tartu, being multilingual and multicultural, is a meeting point for different ethnic and school cultures. Last year, one tenth of the students at the University of Tartu had graduated from a Russian-language elementary school and a bilingual high school in Estonia. In the paper, we investigate which social norms or sociopragmatics specific to the Estonian language community are noticed by Russian-dominant students at the university. We analyse the choice of language of communication at the university and the factors influencing it, as well as the pragmatic aspects of the multilinguals’ communication in Estonian (tu and vous pronouns and other forms of address, avoidance strategies). The empirical data comes from two datasets collected by the authors at the University of Tartu: observational data and interviews about students’ language choices, and interviews about their linguistic and cultural adaptation at the university. We use qualitative deductive content analysis as a method. We found that Russian-dominant students perceive the university as an environment that requires formal language use and using forms of address in a manner that is unfamiliar to most interviewees.","PeriodicalId":40321,"journal":{"name":"Eesti ja Soome-Ugri Keeleteaduse Ajakiri-Journal of Estonian and Finno-Ugric Linguistics","volume":"114 40","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135137234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Kasutasime katses samu lauseid nagu Renate Pajusalu (2001a. Kas moos ja buss seisavad sarnaselt ehk väike katse verbiga „seisma“. Toim Reet Kasik, Keele kannul. Pühendusteos Mati Erelti 60. sünnipäevaks, 250–274. Tartu: Tartu Ülikooli Kirjastus). Tulemusi analüüsisime klasteranalüüsi ja segamudeldamise teel. Klasteranalüüsis jagunesid laused rühmadesse, põhihargnemisega konkreetseteks ja abstraktseteks kasutusteks, mis omakorda jagunesid väiksemateks tähenduslikeks rühmadeks. Segamudelite abil leidsime, et rühmade tekkimisel olid statistiliselt olulised kõik viis tunnust (vertikaalsus, tasakaal, kontakt, võimelisus ja liikumisvõime). Erinevate statistiliste analüüside tulemusi kombineerides järeldasime, et kõige tugevamalt olid eesti keele kõnelejate jaoks füüsilised seisma tähendused seotud vertikaalsuse ja liikumisvõimega, kuid abstraktsete seisma tähenduste seotus tunnustega ei olnud nii selgepiiriline. See tulemus viitab asjaolule, et seisma abstraktsed tähendused ei tugine üheselt seismise füüsilisele kogemusele ning seos füüsilise seismise ja seisma abstraktsete tähenduste vahel vajab edasist uurimist. Abstract. Ann Veismann, Mariann Proos, Piia Taremaa: Are jam and bus still standing? Polysemy of seisma ‘to stand’ in Estonian and the physical experience of standing. The present paper takes the polysemy of the Estonian position verb seisma ‘to stand’ as its focus. We use a conceptual feature rating task to find out how Estonian speakers perceive the different meanings of seisma ‘to stand’. We used sentences from Renate Pajusalu (2001a. Kas moos ja buss seisavad sarnaselt ehk väike katse verbiga „seisma“. In Reet Kasik (ed.), Keele kannul. Pühendusteos Mati Erelti 60. sünnipäevaks, 250–274. Tartu: Tartu Ülikooli Kirjastus) to represent the meanings and asked native Estonian speakers to rate the connection of these sentences to five features: verticality, contact, balance, enablement, and mobility. We applied hierarchical clustering and mixed-effects modelling to analyse the results. For Estonian speakers, verticality and ability to move are the features most connected to the physical experience of standing. Abstract meanings of seisma, however, did not show such uniform behaviour. This result suggests that the abstract meanings of seisma ‘to stand’ are not based on the physical experience of standing in a clear-cut manner, and that the connection between abstract meanings of seisma and the physical experience of standing requires more research attention.","PeriodicalId":40321,"journal":{"name":"Eesti ja Soome-Ugri Keeleteaduse Ajakiri-Journal of Estonian and Finno-Ugric Linguistics","volume":"112 49","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135136921","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The occurrence of prosodic phrase boundary cues such as pauses, pre-boundary lengthening, and creaky voice as well as pitch characteristics and accentuation are analysed. The analysis is based on 753 utterances, where palun appears in three different positions: initial, medial or final. The requests were elicited using context descriptions from 21 female speakers of Estonian. The results show that palun is not phrased as a separate intonation phrase and that its intonation and accentuation vary depending on its position in the host utterance. Utterance-initially, palun always receives an intonational pitch accent while utterance-finally it is unaccented. It is concluded that the integrated prosody of palun may derive from its discourse marker-like function. Its prosody may be representative of certain other categories of parentheticals with similar functional properties such as comment clauses and reporting verbs, but different from functionally more independent parentheticals that express a proposition or speech act of their own. Kokkuvõte. Eva Liina Asu, Heete Sahkai, Pärtel Lippus: Kiilu palun prosoodiline fraseerimine eesti palvetes. Käesolev artikkel uurib kiilu palun prosoodiat eesti keele käsklausena vormistatud palvetes. Vaadeldakse prosoodilise fraasipiiri tunnuste (pausid, lõpupikenemine ja kärisev häälelaad) esinemist ning põhitooni ja aktsentueerimist. Materjaliks on 753 lausungit, kus palun esineb kolmes eri positsioonis: lause alguses, keskel ja lõpus. Materjal salvestati 21 eesti emakeelega naiskõnelejalt katses, kus osalejad pidid palveid esitama nii, nagu nad kontekstikirjelduse põhjal vastavas olukorras seda teeksid. Tulemused näitavad, et sõna palun ei fraseerita eraldi intonatsioonifraasina ja selle intonatsioon ja aktsentueeritus varieeruvad sõltuvalt lausepositsioonist. Lause alguses saab palun alati intonatsioonilise tooniaktsendi, aga lause lõpus on see aktsentueerimata. Kokkuvõtvalt võib palun’i integreeritud prosoodia tuleneda tema diskursusemarkeri-laadsest funktsioonist. Sellisena võib ta sarnaneda prosoodiliselt ka mõningate teiste sarnaselt funktsioneerivate kiiludega, nagu episteemilised või evidentsiaalsed kiilud (nt ma arvan, ütles ta), aga erineda funktsionaalselt iseseisvamatest kiiludest, mis väljendavad eraldiseisvat propositsiooni või kõneakti.","PeriodicalId":40321,"journal":{"name":"Eesti ja Soome-Ugri Keeleteaduse Ajakiri-Journal of Estonian and Finno-Ugric Linguistics","volume":"110 7","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135136391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Abstract. Miina Norvik, Linda Freienthal, Olga Gerassimenko, Airika Harrik, Axel Jagau, Reeli Torn-Leesik, Külli Prillop: 20 years of linguistics Olympiad with Renate Pajusalu. The International Linguistics Olympiad was inaugurated in 2003. The corresponding Estonian national olympiad was established in the same year thanks to the efforts of Renate Pajusalu who became its chief organiser.
