In fact, the special importance of the effort outlined in this paper as a program of action lies in its integrated approach, its attempt to combine renewable energy technology promotion and youth employment, construction of new settlements, poverty eradication, social integration and equality into coordinated and participatory plan of action. This paper reports on the progress of two unique grassroots initiatives: one that started 1974 in a small rural village at the heart of the Nile-Delta called Basaisa and one that started 1992 in a new-desert community called New Basaisa at 8 Km north of Ras Sudr in South Sinai, Egypt. The paper describes the renewable energy technologies used and the approaches that work as well as the problems facing its wide implementation and the achievements to date. Small photovoltaic power units were used in both sites as multifunction units, producing electricity for training and education, some time for TV, some time for the Friday pray in the Mosque, and other times for production activities in small workshops for income generating activities. Knowing that one source of energy can't satisfy all needs in a community, other renewable technologies were used like biogas, wind and solar water heating. The paper also presents a vision of integrated approach to planned internal migration and construction of settlements as new productive eco-desert communities outside the overcrowded narrow Nile-Valley and Delta.","PeriodicalId":403158,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Clean Electrical Power (ICCEP)","volume":"88 27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130777560","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The situation is further aggravated by the lack of an integrated decision support tool, taking into consideration all the parameters affecting the optimum siting of similar power stations. In this context, the main aim of the current work is to develop an appropriate siting procedure on the basis of geographical information systems, taking into consideration the main parameters affecting the best choice of a new RES power station ands using as a test case study the island of Syros in the Aegean Sea.","PeriodicalId":403158,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Clean Electrical Power (ICCEP)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126217897","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In distribution network with a large amount of distributed generators, it becomes difficult to maintain the system voltage within an allowable range. Thus, we have developed a new voltage control method using reactive power control of system connection inverter. Especially, the method is based on the autonomous decentralized approach because it will be difficult to treat a large number of distributed generators by a centralized manner. And the method is composed by three control modes and they are switched by voltage change. However, such a switching control method often becomes unstable especially in the case the dead time is included in the control block. Hence, in this paper, we have developed a new method which is based on not the switching control but the continuous control. The autonomous decentralized controller for voltage profile maintenance is proposed and its dynamics are discussed in this paper.","PeriodicalId":403158,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Clean Electrical Power (ICCEP)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126416528","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such transients can cause voltage flicker or excessive operation of the voltage regulating equipment. This article studies these effects on part of a local distribution substation. Actual transformer load and solar irradiance data based on 1-minute interval are used to simulate the impact of 20% PV penetration on the feeder voltage during a time period that covers both clear and cloudy skies. Based on some specified conditions, the simulations indicate that voltage flicker is not a concern, but the tap changer operates excessively even when using a 5-minute time delay.","PeriodicalId":403158,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Clean Electrical Power (ICCEP)","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131765223","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the purpose of characterizing these destructive wind forces, which are random in nature, an appropriate stochastic model is adopted in the paper. Such model is based upon the probabilistic modeling of gusts occurrence by means of a Poisson Process, while the amplitude of extreme gust wind speeds is modeled by means of suitable extreme value distributions. This approach yields an appropriate “safety function” of the structure, which is defined as the probability that the stochastic process: “largest extreme gust amplitude” is smaller than a given threshold value, in a given time interval. Such safety function can be easily converted into a “safety horizon” (SH), i.e. a time interval in which the WGA smaller than a given threshold value z, with a given high probability value p. If z is chosen as the maximum value of the WGA that the structure can resist, then the SH is an efficient measure (i.e., an opportune quantile) of the time to failure of the structure.","PeriodicalId":403158,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Clean Electrical Power (ICCEP)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134222557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the other hand, high penetration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), especially variable output generations such as winds and photovoltaic systems, exceeds the expected variability and uncertainty of a power system. In this situation, the integration of a DER portfolio can be done following the concept of aggregation of these resources. If several DER units are linked together and are operated as one unit this concept is often called a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). The aim of this paper is to carry out an optimal dispatch that the operator of a VPP is able to maximize its profit in consideration of the relevant technical and economical constraints as well as some existing uncertainties. The profit maximization problem also considers demand side bidding for dispatchable loads, Renewable Obligation Certificate (ROC) for renewable based Distributed Generations (DGs) and the cost related to Use of System (UoS) charges to Distribution System Operator (DSO). The simulation results for a typical system demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.","PeriodicalId":403158,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Clean Electrical Power (ICCEP)","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114749109","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A realistic simulation scheme was implemented to evaluate the hybrid power system behaviour under varying microgrid load requirements. The operating performance were observed in steady state and transient conditions. The action of the ultracapacitor was pointed out, while the PV source operated at the maximum power point. Some discussions about the behaviour of the components and system operating characteristics were reported.","PeriodicalId":403158,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Clean Electrical Power (ICCEP)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117088454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, it is important to apply methods reducing the gas emissions. Towards this goal, an innovative software application that improves the regulation of combustion parameters is presented in this paper. Data mining techniques are used to process historical data and extract models on which regulation rules are based, rather on the thermodynamic theory. Multi Agent Systems are adopted to represent the various tasks that constitute the control operation procedure. The statistical analysis suggest that a reduction of NOx and CO emissions should be expected.","PeriodicalId":403158,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Clean Electrical Power (ICCEP)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117101434","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
