The hybrid system under investigation comprises of a hydropower station, a photovoltaic (PV) generator and a diesel engine, while the entire installation is also supported by the employment of a battery bank. According to the analysis of results obtained, reassessment of the current energy management plan is as proved necessary in order to raise restrictions posed to the energy contribution of the PV generator. The sizing of stand alone PVS is reported as an evaluation of the energy produced by the PVS itself to establish the optimal value of the PV array power and the battery capacity. The deterministic method and the probabilistic approach are used to design the PV system and the battery storage for three selected geographic sites in Italy, characterized by different values of sun radiation. Quaia","doi":"10.1109/ICCEP.2011.6036287","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ICCEP.2011.6036287","url":null,"abstract":"The goal of this paper is assessing the economic feasibility of four-phase AC overhead connections, i.e. the real chance that such lines have of being competitive with commonly-used solutions for power transmission. For this reason, the paper illustrates an economical comparison among innovative 325 kV four-phase ac lines, traditional 400 kV three-phase ac lines and increasingly-popular 500 kV HVDC lines. These systems are considered firstly in single-circuit and secondly in double-circuit overhead arrangement. The comparison is based on the main cost items that characterize these lines, namely investment costs, energy losses costs and reliability-related costs. The biofuel feedstocks chosen represent the current situation of decentralized biodiesel production in Finland. The Finnish biodiesel production is based on the low value feedstocks that are mainly by-products of small-scale industry (e.g. food industry). The stabilities of these biofuels were measured by determining their Oxidation Stability Index (OSI) using the Rancimat method. The stabilizing effect of synthetic antioxidants (BHA and IONOL BF 1000) for oils and ester-type fuels used was determined. It has been analyzed three types of converters: with forced commutation, with commutation from load and the solution proposed by the authors. There are shown the advantages in hybrid switching converters, which in essence connect, constructive and as principle of operation, the advantages of the two known conversion systems. The analysis of the benefits of the proposed solution is done by comparing the circulating power of assets and also by analyzing the power factor. Measured characteristics of illuminated polycrystalline-Si photovoltaic modules are modeled, and the apparent shunt current is analyzed. It is shown that an Ohmic-like behavior only takes place at voltages well below the maximum-power point. At higher voltages, the apparent shunt current quickly drops to negligible values.
