Indeed, the current monolingual and bilingual lexical tools that have been researched do not seem to provide thorough coverage of all the expressive possibilities offered by the adverb magari at the discourse level. An analysis conducted of expressly collected examples has revealed some interesting facts. Firstly, of all the functions that the adverb can perform, the aletich modality, which is not mentioned in the dictionaries consulted, is actually the most frequently used, at least in oral communication, as demonstrated by corpus analyses as well. Secondly, the use of magari to introduce optatives in combination with a subjunctive verb – that is to say, its original function – does not appear in the analyzed corpora at all.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"49 1","pages":"29-46"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76932982","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This visual tool can be considered as a strategy of paraphrasing, since popularizing journalists simplify and make information more explicit by using other semiotic information related to the main scientific content. A comparable corpus composed of the online versions of two American, two French and two Italian magazines of science popularization has been analysed. The role of illustrations, as well as their usefulness in terms of comprehension of the text, has been highlighted through a socio-terminological approach (Gaudin 2003). As far as a typological distinction of the illustrations is concerned, a Peircean classification has been adopted (Fisette 2009; Lathene-Da Cunha 2013). A number of observations emerge from the comparison between the magazines, per type and per language: the article shows that, while some illustrations contribute to a better intelligibility of the article’s content, others influence readers’ sensitivity.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"189 1","pages":"65-81"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72770345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The composer refers to a poetic language which becomes a musical voice and is able to change ‘verbal’ words into ‘musical’ words. On the other side he is oriented towards a musical pattern where the flow of sound returns the free and irrational flow of associations and ideas so that it becomes a metaphor of the interior movement of poetry. The results are vocal and instrumental forms – Sprechgesang , Sprechstimme , Klangfarbenmelodie – which intensify the expressive content of words in their phonemes and confer on words the value of musical structure. A new poetry of music and a new music of poetry finally enter the history of musical aesthetics.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"15 1","pages":"9-28"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83876883","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mystery and magic are linked by various elements such as the persistence of the challenge (between writer and readers or between magician and audience), the power of suggestion, the role of the stage and the attraction towards the impossible. Mystery writing and stage magic both rely on conjuring tricks, devices and misdirection. Starting from this premise, I will discuss two different ways in which theatrical magic has influenced Golden Age writers. While writers such as John Dickson Carr, Hake Talbot and Clayton Rawson – mostly from the United States – would thematise magic, others made an “illusionistic” use of language and narrative in order to confound and misdirect the readers. This technique – which is ultimately rooted in Edgar Allan Poe’s work – recurs in Agatha Christie’s books, where “the quickness of the hand deceives the eye”.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"47 1","pages":"51-63"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86727239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the same time, the novel stands out in the literary genre because of its distinctly materialistic outlook. This essay argues that specific to Carter’s writing is the view of gender discourse as yet another form of idealization of dominant economic relationships. Classical Marxist theory begins with the analysis of capitalism under the Industrial Revolution and extends it to consider its implications in less developed economies. The novel proceeds similarly: it starts with gender relationships most obviously fashioned as economic transactions but explained away as natural, moves on to those apparently less governed by economic interests, and finally examines gender relationships where they appear to be dominated by the supernatural, showing that in all these cases economic relationships are not less decisive but rather differently naturalized.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"168 1","pages":"65-76"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80542893","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present article aims to reassess the contrasting responses this new phenomenon elicited. While the crown actively fostered transcultural experiences, regarding them as conducive to political and diplomatic wisdom, scholars and playwrights presented them as the fall from a condition of purity. Preoccupations concerning the newly acquired national and religious identity of England and Britain mingle in these texts with reflections on language, manners and morals. This anti-cosmopolitan campaign takes on different nuances, alternatively stigmatising the travellers’ affectation and portraying them as devilish. In the first half of the seventeenth century, however, a new paradigm of knowledge as based on experience asserted itself. This led to a reassessment of travelling as a useful social practice and ultimately to the systematisation of the traveller’s gaze. Moreover, the pressure the Ottoman Empire exerted on the Eastern borders of Europe contributed to alert Britons to a new religious and cultural faultline, prompting them to reassess their perception of intra-European differences.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"17 1","pages":"9-32"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84322830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is obtained by a recovery of a shared imaginary tradition which is close to the reader, mixing fictional and historical characters, films, books, different genres of popular literature. Nevertheless, the rewriting of these imaginary traditions involves their displacement, a presentation which is constantly created from an unusual point of view. Thus, shifting the image of what is already known, the text inquires into several modalities of a questioning about cultural memory and its redefinition in relation to contemporary culture. By focusing on these elements, this study proposes an analysis which starts from the construction of the characters, the role of suspense and the adoption of multiple traditions of novel writing.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"83 1","pages":"37-54"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-02-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77458715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first one discusses the typical features which characterize Bantu languages, in particular analysing the criteria which have been individuated in order to classify a given language as Bantu. In the second part we will instead provide data from Tshiluba (Congo), one of the most prototypical and conservative Bantu languages spoken in the core Bantu domain. We will first analyse the phonology, as well as the orthographical system, of the language, shifting then to the most interesting morphosyntactic aspects: the complex nominal morphology, which comprehends 18 agreement classes, also labelled genders, and the remarkable verbal system. Indeed in Tshiluba the different verbal forms are morphologically complex and contain several affixes, each with a specific function. Finally, particularly relevant is the fact that the tense distinctions we are so much accustomed with prove immaterial in this language, where the various verbal forms are differentiated in terms of aspect, rather than tense.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"110 1","pages":"53-73"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88602891","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
