On that occasion he delivered a beautiful and extremely learned lectio magistralis, whose title, “Towers, Trees and Terror”, sounded significant and emblematic if we consider that only two months earlier the terroristic attack on the Twin Towers of New York had taken place. In his lectio, among other things, he quoted and translated an ode by Horace to underline the fact that anything can happen and that God can overturn the highest things and face the most powerful people at any time.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"96 1","pages":"35-45"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72801220","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Brown Owl was Ford’s first work, written for his sister Juliet to reassure her after the saddest event of their life: their father’s death and the division of their family. The “fairy story” as Ford calls it, seems to follow the scheme of popular fairy tales but it was born out of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, which Ford frequented in those years and carries most of the features of the late Victorian literary aestheticism. Art for art’s sake, irony, disenchantment, longing for evasion, are among them. Ford himself later belittled his fairy tales defining them as “twaddle”, but fairy tale motifs peep out throughout his prose and seem to play an important role in his view of the world.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"4 1","pages":"49-59"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82536914","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After the recent publication of two studies, by Silvia Blasio and by Costanza Costanzi & Marina Massa, which have created new conditions to compare the paintings by Agostino Masucci and Francesco Mancini, this essay reconsiders the period of Mancini’s commitment to the Mafra Convent and to the Cathedral of Evora. For a long period, Mancini’s canvases were confused with works by Masucci and attributed to the latter’s workshop. It was only after the exhibition in Rome in 1994, which illustrated the artistic influence of “Rome in Portugal” and “Portugal in Rome”, that it was possible to reconsider the figure of Francesco Mancini. This article also reassesses the works done by Mancini and sent to King John V about 1730-31.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"72 1","pages":"61-83"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78053557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
{"title":"Comunicare la contemporaneità: cinema e società in Gran Bretagna (1929-1991)","authors":"S. Guerra","doi":"10.1400/283873","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1400/283873","url":null,"abstract":"Through a series of case studies, this long essay seeks to demonstrate the fruitfulness of using film as evidence for studying history and culture. Taking under consideration films as diverse as the chart-toppers The Wicked Lady (1945) and A Hard Day’s Night (1964), the documentary Drifters (1929), imperial adventures like The Four Feathers (1939), and ‘auteur’ films like Pressure (1975), High Hopes (1988) and Riff-Raff (1991), this work aims to establish their relation to the society and culture in which they were produced and to extrapolate the meanings and identities, in short the ideology they put forward. From a cultural studies perspective, via the medium of film, the present essay therefore elucidates cultural discourses current in the six decades considered – from the 1930s to the 1980s – and means to be as much a historical mini-survey as a contribution to the hitherto neglected study of British film in Italian universities.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"30 1","pages":"11-70"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83681556","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
