Guerra","doi":"10.7358/ling-2014-001-guer","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.7358/ling-2014-001-guer","url":null,"abstract":"The aim of this essay is to explore Meera Syal’s novels – Anita and Me and Life isn’t all ha ha hee hee – and to suggest that they show and sponsor a level of hybridity that I call ‘ibridita conclamata’ (full-blown hybridity), a condition in which the diasporic subject makes the most of the cultures that constitute him/her. At the end of both novels the female protagonists, who overcome their various crises and reach a more mature and balanced identity by valuing elements of the culture they had rejected – in this case traditional Indian culture – represent fictional embodiments of that kind of hybridity. Thus parallels in Arnold’s text with passages written by Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve, Thucydides, Arthur Clough, William Shakespeare, and William Wordsworth are highlighted. In this investigation, The Simpsons will be considered as a trans-medial phenomenon, including, besides the celebrated sit-com, also the Simpsons based adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth created and performed by Rick Miller (2002), the video games that feature the famous yellow-skinned characters, and the comic book series entitled Simpsons Comics. After a brief theoretical introduction, this paper will illustrate how the Shakespeare myth is de-mythologized through The Simpsons, to be re-mythologized so as to function and be meaningful in our contemporary world. From the etymological study to more complex reflections about the disintegration of the character through the anthroponym in contemporary literature, the naming process is still an excellent way to understand the narrative dynamics. In the novel Marianela by Benito Perez Galdos, the name of the main character is proposed as an extraordinary clue to penetrate the narratological level and to reveal the position of the author. The ambiguity in the naming process, together with some other biographical facts which the author doesn’t clearly show, become a clue to reveal the critical posture of the author towards the staunchly positivist narrator. In The Betrothed , however, the whole episode is being rewritten from the Augustinian model of the Confessions , which represents conversion as a slow and gradual process of crisis, full of anxiety, inner conflict, dejection and resistance, in which God calls for repentance, creates favourable opportunities, eliminates inner anguish and offers necessary help, while respecting human timing, nature and freedom. Tolstoy (1859). The author first considers the concepts of ‘offense’ , ‘repentance’ and ‘forgiveness’ through an analysis of the Russian terminology used by Tolstoy for these semantic fields ( obida , dosada , vina , raskajanie , pokajanie ); next, in an analysis of Clemente Rebora’s Italian translation (1920), special attention is paid to the differences from the original text that signal the translator’s interpretive reading, which, at the same time, becomes a tool for understanding it. As language is located in space, it is both the expression of a territory and the vocal instrument of the people who inhabit it. Therefore Camilleri’s Sicily is created by his use of dialect, which adds to his sense of identity. This ‘Sicilianita’ is not only an element that inspires his writing and his humanity, but it also becomes a playful mixture of oral and written expression, which is both a linguistic game and a reflection on the nature of dialect itself.
