The author examines some negative statements about women scattered in the poem, distinguishing between the statements attributable to the writer and those uttered by various characters; some cases of obvious or suspected interpolation are also examined. Discriminating between gynophoby, as a collective and mostly unconscious cultural attitude, and misogyny, as an individual and often declared attitude, the author concludes that in Ferdowsi’s work it would be appropriate to speak of a clear reflection of the gynophobic background of a whole culture or age rather than of misogyny.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"42 1","pages":"73-88"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74458471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The three groups were matched according to the instructional time, content, and methodology and received different feedbacks on their writings for eight sessions. Analysis of the research data obtained from an immediate and a delayed 45-item multiple-choice focused grammar test and writing post-test displayed the difficulty hierarchy of learning relative clauses. Significant improvements on the immediate post-test for all groups were observed, but no effect on the delayed posttest was found. The metalinguistic feedback group, however, achieved significantly higher levels of accuracy in their use of relative clauses on the writing post-test. The findings support the Interpretability Hypothesis and the Complex Adaptive System Principles Model and suggest that metalinguistic knowledge can serve as compensatory mechanisms to the correct production of relative clauses.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"23 1","pages":"89-109"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78580829","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the form of five articles of propaganda, published in English and American newspapers, the famous writer described the conditions of life and battle of Italian soldiers waging a ‘vertical’ war in the mountains. Indeed the writer-reporter, immersed in this strange mountainous landscape far away from his Indian homeland, combines the power of realistic writing, elements of natural history and zoological metaphors to describe the different protagonists in this war (the visual land scape), its smells (olfactory landscape) and its sounds (soundscape). Kipling also took the opportunity to build a history of representations of a fictitious Italianity.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"75 1","pages":"69-86"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90958453","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is a cultural fabrication denoting the Muslim (but bearing very little or no resemblance with the real historical one) which is present in a great variety of texts, particularly in Middle English romances. The article intends to contribute to an academic project of a ‘postcolonial’ kind which only recently got underway: to ascertain the role played by Islam and the Islamic world in European and global history, exposing what official, Eurocentric historiography (and on its trail literary criticism) had usually withheld or elided, deconstructing its truisms, unmasking myths and stereotypes, and decentring its narrative.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"14 1","pages":"9-25"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89386771","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This applies among others to the novel Un giorno perfetto (2005) of the bestselling Italian author Melania Mazzucco, featuring a complex intertextual-intermedial bricolage. Focusing in particular on its narrative which is deeply marked by typical cinematographic modes, this essay contends that, as more than a social fresco, the novel’s depiction of contemporary Italy explores the conflict between appearance and substance as a key experience of the subject vis a vis the common mediatized reality. As constantly recurring themes, cinema and photography serve the purpose of emblematically embodying the illusory character of this reality.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"312 1","pages":"49-67"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76859636","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Though the scene recreated by the characters in Flaiano’s short story may be interpreted as a mise en abyme, through the transformation of Alma-Tadema’s original image using different modes of writing – in particular narrative dialogues and ekphrasis – Flaiano actually critiques an elitist and anti-historical use of art in literature. Building on a reference that the narrator makes to the Decameron , the article shows how the ekphrasis hosts an ideological conflict that opposes the narrator’s interpretation of Heliogabalus’s feast to the one reproduced and staged during a fancy dinner held by members of Rome’s high-society.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"3 1","pages":"27-47"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86846195","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The motif has different functions and various usages coexist. Fire can be the symbol of divine power, of man’s emancipation from the supernatural (as a sign of man’s dominion over fire), of purification (an aspect which can apply to both soul and body), of reason and creativity (a use which applies to works of the spirit and of art), of life (i.e. man’s physical existence), and of passions, feelings, and strong emotions (particularly of love). Therefore, to understand women’s writing in Belize after the Independence it is important to appreciate this country as a Post-Colonial space. For this reason, through six short fictions from the anthologies Point of Order , Belizean Nail Soup and Shades of Red the traditions, fears, daily life and gender roles in Belize have been analysed. Additionally, from a feminist and post-colonial perspective, women’s writings are scrutinized to show some problems and difficulties in post-colonial Belize, such as gender equity and roles, languages, racial and cultural mixtures. Furthermore, this analysis takes into consideration the solidarity between men and women to change society in order to obtain gender equity, as well as women’s empowering in this recently decolonized country.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"71 1","pages":"29-42"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81930626","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Chinese essays are analysed and compared with the Russian and Italian studies of the same period so as to highlight the peculiarities of the Chinese interpretation. The paper illustrates how Chinese criticism has mainly focused on the social and ideological meanings of Goldoni’s works rather than on their formal aspects. As a consequence, the Venetian’s plays have been introduced as an example for the creation of revolutionary and modern Chinese theatre, and in order to endorse this effort made by Chinese theatre experts.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"80 1","pages":"43-64"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76162985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
