An indispensable part of learning to read and write a foreign language should, hence, develop critical thinking skills that allow interpretation and accurate expression of overt and covert propositions. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to examine the impact of an eleven-session critical thinking (CT) awareness-raising (AR) mingled with an Advanced Writing Course on 50 male and female Iranian postgraduate TEFL students’ reading comprehension and the accuracy, complexity, and organization of their writing of argumentative texts. The participants in two intact classes were randomly assigned as the experimental and control groups. The treatment followed a reading to writing direction with a stronger focus on explicit presentation and practice of reading-embedded argumentation elements and CT skills in the experimental group. The control group, however, started off with the same materials with now CT focus and proceeded to the detailed process-oriented writing phase. Comparison of the groups’ reading and writing post-test scores verified superior performance of the experimental group in reading and writing of argumentative texts and offer pedagogical implications.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"31 1","pages":"111-130"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82849795","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goals of this study are three-fold. It begins with an examination of the treatment of Poetic Realism in the most significant critical views of the genealogy of American film noir; then several films are analyzed in some detail to reinforce the connections and contrasts in specific French and American films. The paper concludes with several proposals about why the role of Poetic Realism has been so often presented as relatively insignificant.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"58 1","pages":"13-27"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83901430","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The film forms the backbone to Sebastien Ortiz’s novel Mademoiselle Coeur Solitaire (2005), which takes up and re-elaborates one of the secondary characters living in the internal courtyard onto which the apartment of the film’s protagonist faces. The article shows how, through a clever and amusing change of perspective, the novel tries to sabotage the Hitchcockian hypotext – and more generally the role of cinema –highlighting at the same time the themes and motives represented, thus reactivating the vision and confirming the fame of the master of suspense.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"24 1","pages":"95-110"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75383431","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gold, discovered in 1851, brought new stories and locations, including suddenly rich Melbourne, and past convicts and bushrangers were recreated sympathetically as a tough, independent national image. Twentieth-century fiction continued to feature the crime novel and the bush detective; police remained unpopular, but some mid-century women writers used them before moving on to strong psychothrillers, while American war-time presence led to popular private-eye fiction. Both the imperial weight of London publishing and local literary prejudice made Australian crime fiction little known at home, but this changed by 1980, and well-recognised local crime writing and publishing has strongly developed. Private eyes, both men and women and even police detectives are well-known, crime novels and psychothrillers are flourishing, many contemporary issues are debated in the genre, including Indigenous writers and their concerns.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"33 1","pages":"59-74"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73454361","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

S. Chomjakov was a censored work because of its religious content. Outside of its borders, in the West, it was known and quoted mostly by theologians and philosophers. Over the past twenty years, studies in Russian literature have shown the importance of this work. An echo of Cerkov ‘odna can, for example, be found, more or less explicitly, in the novels and poems of some great authors of the 19th and 20th centuries, such as, for example, L.N. Tolstoy, F.M. Dostoevsky and L.P. Karsavin. Audible, graphic and linguistic material composing works halfway between poetry, music and graphic arts, onomatopoeia seems to converge in the three avant-gardes’ artistic and historic goals because of their intermedial, interdisciplinary and transnational dimension. They assert themselves by shaping this ambiguous material in a new approach, and each of them pretends to be the inventor of the onomatopoeic creation. Questioning origin, onomatopoeia looks however toward novelty, and wish to appear as a modern medium, with which the so-called fossilized arts could be revolutionized.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"43 1","pages":"41-58"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73190343","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

What does he do to name the referents which have not received a name in that language? This is an important question especially at the beginning of the nineteenth century when Orientalists began to take an interest in the East. The Western author feels a priori that his potential reader is capable of grasping the representations he transcribed of real referents of exotic character. However, the estimate made is false, resulting in a break in understanding on the reader’s side. This occurs especially when the textual referent moves away from the “real” referent. The cognitive and semantic-referential difference or approximation are analyzed in the case of unexplained foreign words, using the strategies implemented by the author that we will discuss. For us, it is a question of studying, from a semantico-discursive perspective, the different processes that allow the writer to describe the exotic referent, starting from a limited corpus of texts of French travelers in Persia in the nineteenth century.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"12 1","pages":"9-28"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74416025","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Silence is probably one of the least studied – though one of the most difficult and compelling – of Pinter’s plays. The author identifies the broken syntax and the combination of utterances and silences as indicators of time and space shifts. She claims that the patchwork which appears from the structure of the play depicts the loss of logic, and that the abandonment of chronological time in linguistic terms conveys the subjective, circular, and illogical element of the human experience of time. Characters’ bodies and utterances materialize both their own past recollections and their present experiences. The present work may be useful to theatre scholars as an example of drama as a portrayal of philosophical and linguistic theories about time and discourse.","PeriodicalId":40208,"journal":{"name":"Linguae &-Rivista di Lingue e Culture Moderne","volume":"93 1","pages":"59-72"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91200360","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
