En las alusiones frecuentes de la novela a circuitos y mercados de ropa de segunda mano, Galdós pone en tela de juicio las condiciones que impiden la autoformación burguesa en el Madrid de finales del siglo XIX. Al examinar las adquisiciones sartoriales del protagonista epónimo al lado de las constantes referencias intertextuales a la novela realista europea en El Doctor Centeno, este ensayo propone una lectura de Centeno como un doble irónico y metaliterario de Galdós en sus aspiraciones a perfeccionar la novela realista española.Abstract:This article analyzes Galdós’s meaningful engagement with used clothing motifs and literary intertextuality in the characterization of Felipe Centeno in El Doctor Centeno (1883). Through the novel’s frequent allusions to secondhand circuits and markets, Galdós presents a critical portrayal of the conditions stunting bourgeois self-formation in late nineteenth-century Madrid. By situating the eponymous protagonist’s secondhand sartorial acquisitions alongside El Doctor Centeno’s many intertextual references to the pan-European realist novel, this essay suggests that we may read Centeno as an ironic, metaliterary double for Galdós, who aspired to perfect the Spanish realist novel.","PeriodicalId":40152,"journal":{"name":"Anales Galdosianos","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2019-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/ANG.2018.0002","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45902091","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

El presente trabajo aporta datos biográficos, declaraciones y datos profesionales del director que demuestran que esas percepciones no son del todo fieles a la realidad. Se repasan las numerosas críticas favorables de los más importantes especialistas ante su estreno y se estudia el filme a la luz de una copia del guion original con el que trabajó Gil, anotado de su puño y letra, y una entrevista con su hijo que aportan una perspectiva nueva de su director y de su adaptación.Abstract:The film version of Benito Pérez Galdós’s El abuelo, directed by Rafael Gil as La duda (1972), has been considered by film and Galdós studies as not at the artistic level of the other Galdós film adaptations, especially those of Luis Buñuel, because of Gil’s assumed support for the Franco regime, and supposed commercialism. This article presents biographical information and the director’s own notes and statements that show the need to modulate those views. The positive contemporary critical reception by the most important critics of the moment and the director’s annotated script, as well as an interview with his son, all shed a new light on the film and on its director.","PeriodicalId":40152,"journal":{"name":"Anales Galdosianos","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2019-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/ANG.2018.0000","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41254415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
