The author pays close attention to the complexity of the Chinese diaspora regarding general backgroundinformation and three measurable aspects of integration: acculturation, placement and identification. Analysing the findings of this research, the authorfound that Chinese migrants in Hungary, while maintaining strong and activelinks with China, also display positive attitudes towards societal integrationin Hungary. It also emerges that Chinese migrants show general interest towards the host society’s customs and culture, and many of them can speak orare willing to learn Hungarian. The findings of this research show that certainchanges may have occurred in the Chinese diaspora in Hungary, which callfor further research and new policies.","PeriodicalId":399310,"journal":{"name":"Távol-keleti Tanulmányok","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130010282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present paper, I widen the scope of that analysis by examiningthe problems of positioning Japan in the context of what is called “world history” in Western philosophical tradition. This was an extremely challengingtask, as most of the interpretations of Weltgeschichte placed “the East” as suchon the starting point of the historical progress. This idea cannot easily be harmonised with the notion of kokutai 国体, which seemed to be, on the otherhand, a prerequisite of building a Western-like “nation-state” in Japan. In thispaper I examine the ways in which leading Japanese intellectuals such asKatō Hiroyuki 加藤弘之, Mori Arinori 森有礼, Sakatani Shiroshi 坂谷素,Watsuji Tetsurō 和辻哲郎 and Nishida Kitarō 西田幾多郎 handled the tension between the “West” and the “East”, and how Japan was reflected in the“mirror” of the West in their writings.","PeriodicalId":399310,"journal":{"name":"Távol-keleti Tanulmányok","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115204905","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper aims to clarify what kinds of difference occurred in the process of translating and typing the shorthand symbols into magazines andnewspapers. It has become clear that the stenographed speeches published in newspapers and magazines were not faithful reproductions of the original texts. Tomake it easier for the reader to understand, mistakes were rectified in the transcribing process, words and word forms were corrected by the stenographer and/or the editor. It seems that- as linguistic material - the value of a stenographic record ishigher than that of a shorthand book. However, very few shorthand manuscripts have so far been confirmed and in genre they are closer to stenographed speeches. We can assume that if a shorthand manuscript such as rakugo落語 or the Imperial Congressional Record were to be discovered, our understanding of the Meiji period Japanese language would be further enhanced.","PeriodicalId":399310,"journal":{"name":"Távol-keleti Tanulmányok","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124184898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, those ships did not comeout of nowhere; there had been various earlier attempts to establish diplomaticand commercial relations with Japan, first by Russia and later by other Westernpowers. These attempts sparked heated debates in Japan regarding the dangercaused by the foreign ships and the best way to avoid this menace. In this paper, after providing a brief description of earlier initiativesaimed at establishing diplomatic relations with Japan, I concentrate on UnitedStates foreign policy vis-à-vis Japan: the USA came into contact with Japanthrough its thriving whaling industry, as in the 1820s US whalers frequentedthe waters close to Japan. Later various economic considerations led to thedecision to organize an expedition to Japan to effectively ensure that Japaneseports would receive US ships and to open the country for commerce. Thesuccess of the US expedition was due to various factors, not least the motivation and determination of its leader, Matthew C. Perry.","PeriodicalId":399310,"journal":{"name":"Távol-keleti Tanulmányok","volume":"231 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130707068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the past, the outbreak of a disease was usually attributed to theinfluence of higher spiritual forces. Views on disease and healing weretraditionally influenced by a variety of factors. On one hand, views on lifeand afterlife reflected in popular beliefs defined the way disease was approached. On the other hand, Chinese knowledge of the human body and itsailments penetrated Japan as early as the Heian period. During the Tokugawaperiod spiritual approaches to healing were increasingly combined with moremodern views of the body and official healers and practitioners started toexercise a growing influence on the attitudes of people towards healing andillness. The present paper introduces some of the most significant milestonesin the development of these attitudes through an overview of popular spiritualfigures and deities of healing, and of historical sources documenting theevolution of official medicine.","PeriodicalId":399310,"journal":{"name":"Távol-keleti Tanulmányok","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124940483","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
