This research uses a descriptive approach with qualitative method. The data of this research are clauses that explain characterization with behavioral process in the short stories of Nouvelles Vertes anthology. This research uses the theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics by Halliday and Matthiesen (2014) and characterization technique by Nurgiyantoro (2018). The results show that there are three types of behavioral processes used to explain characterization, i.e. verbal, mental, and physical. The characterization techniques realized with behavioral processes are in the form of character reaction techniques and thoughts and feelings techniques. The tendency to use behavioral processes with character reaction techniques shows that each event in the short story directly affects the character's behavior in terms of speech, actions, and feelings.","PeriodicalId":398772,"journal":{"name":"LEKSEMA: Jurnal Bahasa dan Sastra","volume":"41 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141345928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Designers and advertisers are trying to attract modest fashion’s consumers. One of the mediums to promote it is by advertorials. Analyzing words and phrases used in advertorials can help advertisers, practitioners and other concerned parties to understand how advertorials are written. Using Leech’s theory toward meanings, this study aimed to analyze and compare the differences between the advertorials of Muslim women modest clothing and women's clothing from semantic perspective. This study applied a descriptive qualitative approach by analyzing four advertorials of women’s modest, formal, and casual clothing. The results of this study show that the advertorials of modest clothing seem to use a thematic meaning by creating the images of comforted and elegant looking Muslim women in modest clothes. On the other hand, the advertorials of women’s formal and casual clothing look to portray the wearers as sexy and confident women. Although both types of advertorials give meanings with empowering themes, they explore different aspects of empowerment to give understanding toward their potential consumers.","PeriodicalId":398772,"journal":{"name":"LEKSEMA: Jurnal Bahasa dan Sastra","volume":"110 38","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141124769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper, accordingly, aimed to find out the phonological, graphological, and grammatical features in villanelles,19-line poems with six stanzas, entitled One Art, Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night, and Villanelle of Spring Bells. This study employed a descriptive-qualitative method with the data in the forms of 52 prepositional phrases. The findings indicate that, there are two main phonological features in the villanelles, namely consonance and assonance. Aside from that, each villanelle shows graphological features in the forms of different punctuation marks that reflect various meanings. There are also the uses of capital letters at the beginning of each stanza. Regarding the grammatical aspects, prepositional phrases have the highest frequency with the total of 52 occurrences in all the three villanelles. The use of these stylistic elements facilitates the readers to understand the messages of literary works. The readers could gain knowledge of the phonological, graphological, and grammatical features of villanelles by studying the stylistic elements in these three villanelles.","PeriodicalId":398772,"journal":{"name":"LEKSEMA: Jurnal Bahasa dan Sastra","volume":"19 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138604039","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research was designed in descriptive-qualitative method by using video recordings and interviews from Pragmatics class of postgraduate degree students as the data sources. The obtained data were then analyzed using Miles and Huberman model of analysis by involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that students frequently switched and mixed codes during the discussions. In this case, ode mixing was dominantly occurred compared to code switching. There were 78 occurrences of code changes in total, with the proportions of 44 mixings and 34 switchings. Dealing with the types, insertion code mixing was found to be the mostly used in the discussions whereas intersentenential switching becomes the least. The phenomena of code switching and mixing in the classroom discussions has various functions, i.e.: for communication strategy, for delivering the meaning, for making clarification of the information, for defining specific terms, and for increasing understanding. This study also reflects the students' positive attitudes toward using switching and mixing codes in classroom discussion activities. It is recommended for further research to ensure the appropriate strategies for the teachers in switching and mixing codes for both offline and online classes.","PeriodicalId":398772,"journal":{"name":"LEKSEMA: Jurnal Bahasa dan Sastra","volume":"392 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127592768","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to identify stress patterns and factors that influence the emergence of ToT states. This research used a quantitative approach with the basis of ToT analysis theory from Brown and McNeill. For collecting data, it used an experimental design with EFL students in Kampung Inggris Pare as the objects by involving total 15 participants aged from 18th to 21st years old or late teens. The results show that the language features appearing from the experiment including words (65%), first syllables (24%), last syllables (3%), and letters (6%). The first syllable shows 21% occurrences more than that of the last syllable. There is no identification of stress in the completion of ToT in terms of the appearance of the dominating first syllable. It means that stress does not affect the completion of the ToT, but the frequency of syllables. The other factors that affect ToT in EFL include the mental processes of EFL learners, the sound imitations towards direct communication, and the teacher's role in teaching pronunciation.","PeriodicalId":398772,"journal":{"name":"LEKSEMA: Jurnal Bahasa dan Sastra","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124292209","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper aimed to contrast the similarities and differences of the patterns of ideational structure and syntactic functions of noun phrases in two different text genres. It employed systemic functional linguistic approach using both Ideational structure analysis and syntactical analysis of noun phrases in narrative texts and news articles. The findings of this study show that noun phrases in narrative texts tend to be shorter and simpler, especially as they occupy the subject and object functions. The forms of pre-modifiers used also tend to be simpler (ranging from the use of one or two pre-modifiers only). The same case occurs in post-modifier forms as well. In contrast, news articles tend to use complex phrase structures (two or even three pre-modifiers at once) which are coupled with other complex information in the post-modifiers. Appositives appear several times as post-modifiers to complete the information in the noun phrases. In conclusion, these differences prove that the determinism of writing style in each genre has a significant share in determining the pattern complexity of the noun phrase structures therein.","PeriodicalId":398772,"journal":{"name":"LEKSEMA: Jurnal Bahasa dan Sastra","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123345480","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The directive illocutionary act is the most frequently used speech act in everyday life. In Japanese, the meanings of these speech acts are often misinterpreted so the meaning of the speech isn’t conveyed properly. Peach Girl and Miseinen Dakedo Kodomo Janai use a lot of directive illocutionary speech acts, so a deeper study is needed regarding the meaning of directive speech act. The theory used in this research is speech act theory by Searle (1979). This study used descriptive qualitative method. This study examined the relationship between English proficiency, public speaking experience, and communication apprehension in polytechnic students during oral presentations. The study involved 62 students from a polytechnic in Sarawak, Malaysia, who filled in the PRCA-24 questionnaire that focused on the elements of public speaking. The results showed that 6.4% of the students had a low level of communication apprehension, while 71% had a moderate level of communication apprehension. For 22.6% of the students, the level of apprehension was very high. The students felt anxious and uncomfortable when asked to give an oral presentation. The t-test showed that the male students significantly differed from the female students regarding their communication apprehension. The mean scores showed that the male students experienced greater communication apprehension (M= 2.19 ± 0.52) than the female students (M= 2.00 ± 0.44). There was a significant negative relationship between oral presentation experience and the level of communication apprehension. These results may suggest that extensive training in public speaking can improve public speaking skills and enhance employability opportunities.","PeriodicalId":398772,"journal":{"name":"LEKSEMA: Jurnal Bahasa dan Sastra","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114478052","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
