Benavides-Córdoba","doi":"10.1016/j.rh.2023.100815","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rh.2023.100815","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Introduction</h3><p>Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease has a guide in charge of prevention and treatment, called the Global Initiative for Chronic Lung Disease, which is annually updated and catalogs pulmonary rehabilitation, within the treatment options.</p></div><div><h3>Objective</h3><p>To describe the effects on clinical variables, functional capacity, anxiety/depression and health-related quality of life in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, after a pulmonary rehabilitation program, according to the GOLD 2020 classification in a Cali clinic.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>Descriptive, longitudinal study where 79 patients divided into 3 groups were included (B, C and D).</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>The mean age was 70 years, 69% men. The number of hospitalized days was greater for groups C and D with an average of 8 and 13 days, respectively (<em>p</em> <!-->≤<!--> <!-->0.000). The functional capacity showed a greater distance in group C (421<!--> <!-->m) and the shortest distance for group D (328<!--> <!-->m), <em>p</em> <!-->≤<!--> <!-->0.006. In anxiety and depression, group D managed to obtain improvements as well as in the quality of life questionnaire.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusion</h3><p>Group C presented greater functional capacity and better quality of life, group B had better results in clinical variables, and group D had worse clinical condition, functional capacity and quality of life. The aim is to find out if HPOT and SHPOT produce the same effects on balance, gross motor function, and postural control in children under 18 years old with cerebral palsy.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>The keywords used were: hippotherapy, equine-assisted therapy and cerebral palsy. The databases used were PeDro, Scopus, LILACS, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and CINAHL Complete (Ebsco). Studies were included if they were randomized clinical trials that studied the effect of HPOT and/or SHPOT on the variables mentioned in these patients.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>Four studies assessed balance, 4 studied gross motor function, and 2 investigated postural control. Both HPOT and SHPOT produced benefits in all of them.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>According to the studied variables both interventions produce similar improvements. Goizueta-San-Martín","doi":"10.1016/j.rh.2023.100807","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rh.2023.100807","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objective</h3><p>To evaluate the sensitivity of sympathetic skin response (SSR) and compare it with scintigraphy in patients with complex regional pain syndrome diagnosed according to the Budapest criteria.</p></div><div><h3>Material and methods</h3><p>Twenty-two patients with complex regional pain syndrome who attended the Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine Department between January-2018 and May-2022 have been prospectively evaluated. The scintigraphy was considered positive if in the 1st-2nd phase slight asymmetric and diffuse uptake was observed, or when in the 3rd phase marked periarticular radioisotope uptake was observed. SSR was abnormal if: a) no response after 20 stimuli; b) lack of habituation with permanence of the stimuli greater than 67.2%.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>Age 55.4<!--> <!-->±<!--> <!-->8.57 years. Complex regional pain syndrome was more frequent in women (90.9%), more common in upper limbs (68.2%) than lower limbs (31.8%). In SSR, we have observed normal response (&lt;<!--> <!-->67.2%) in 2 patients (11.1%), lack of SSR in 2 patients (11.1%) and lack of habituation (&gt;<!--> <!-->67.2%) in 14 patients (77.8%). In total, 16 patients presented abnormal or absent responses (88.8%). The diagnostic sensitivity of scintigraphy is similar to that of SSR (89.5% vs 88.8%), with no statistical difference (<em>P</em> <!-->=<!--> <!-->.6721).</p></div><div><h3>Conclusion</h3><p>Scintigraphy has shown similar sensitivity to SSR, although the simplicity, security, low cost, non-ionizing and non-invasiveness of the latter technique suggest that it could be more cost-effective. However, it has been suggested in published works that the prognosis of small hemorrhages is not so negative. The aim of this paper is to assess the neurological evolution in individuals with intraparenchymal hemorrhage according to its size.</p></div><div><h3>Material and methods</h3><p>Retrospective observational study. Selected all the patients admitted for acute traumatic SCI between 2010 and 2018 with early magnetic resonance study and spinal cord hemorrhage. Two groups were established depending on the size of the bleeding: microhemorrhages (less than 4<!--> <!-->mm) and macrohemorrhages (greater than 4<!--> <!-->mm). The neurological examination at admission and discharge was compared according to the AIS grade and the motor score (MS).</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>Forty-six cases collected, 17 microhemorrhages and 29 macrohemorrhages. 70.6% of the microhemorrhages were AIS A while among macrohemorrhages the percentage was 89.6%. At the time of discharge, an improvement in the AIS grade was observed in 40.0% of the microhemorrhages compared to 4.0% of the macrohemorrhages (<em>P</em>=.008). Initial MS was similar, 45.2<!--> <!-->±<!--> <!-->22.2 in the microhemorrhages and 40.9<!--> <!-->±<!--> <!-->20.4 in the macrohemorrhages (<em>P</em>=.459), but at discharge it was higher in the first group: 60.4<!--> <!-->±<!--> <!-->20.5 for 42.7<!--> <!-->±<!--> <!-->22.8 (<em>P</em>=.033). The sample was 51 people with Parkinson's disease, from the region of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica, and whose information was collected from the database of the Rehabilitation Corporation Club de Leones Cruz del Sur, to which they belong.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>The main results show that 51.6% of people with Parkinson's disease report a «good and very good» quality of life and that the main domains of the Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39) affected are: body discomfort, mobility and emotional well-being. According to the analysis of the qualitative ranges of the PDQ-39, the dimensions that were most compromised during the confinement by the covid-19 pandemic were: communication, stigma and emotional well-being. In addition, women had a poorer quality of life than men. Kerem Gunel","doi":"10.1016/j.rh.2023.100784","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.rh.2023.100784","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objective</h3><p>To investigate relationships between amount of use of the more affected upper extremity and functional motor and communication performance classification systems.</p></div><div><h3>Material and methods</h3><p>The study comprised 95 children with congenital hemiplegic cerebral palsy (CP) aged 6–15 years (52 males, 43 females; mean age 9.53, SD 3.1) and their parents/caregivers. The amount of use of the more affected upper extremity was assessed using Pediatric Motor Activity Log-Revised-How Often subscale (PMAL-R HO). Functional levels of the enrolled children were defined by the parents/caregivers using Manual Ability Classification System (MACS), Gross Motor Function Classification System-Expanded and Revised (GMFCS-E&amp;R), and Communication Function Classification System (CFCS).</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>A strong and negative correlation was found between PMAL-R HO subscale score and MACS (<em>r</em> <!-->=<!--> <!-->−0.819), suggesting that children with lower MACS levels are more likely to use their more affected upper extremity spontaneously. Additionally, negative and moderate associations between PMAL-R HO subscale score and GMFCS and CFCS were revealed (<em>r</em>1<!--> <!-->=<!--> <!-->−0.549 and <em>r</em>2<!--> <!-->=<!--> <!-->−0.567).</p></div><div><h3>Conclusion</h3><p>The amount of use of the more affected upper extremity is more sensitive to MACS than GMFCS-E&amp;R and CFCS. Children with a given MACS level had a wide range of PMAL-R HO subscale score. We present the results of patient assessment when they were discharged from the ICU.</p></div><div><h3>Material and method</h3><p>Cohort study of patients affected by SARS-COV-2 pneumonia admitted to the intensive care unit from 01/10/2020 to 31/07/2021. We collect sociodemographic data, personal history, ICU and hospital stay, Barthel, FAC and mMRC (pre-admission/initial assessment/discharge), development of osteomuscular and/or neurological pathology and need for rehabilitation treatment.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>A total of 341 patients were evaluated, of which 224 met criteria. The average age was 63 years (68.75% men). Mean ICU/hospital stay were 27/44 days. They were assessed by physiatry, after that, we provide a guide developed by physiatry, solving doubts about the disease and setting exercises of intensity and progressive difficulty, to be carried out during the admission and at home. Neurological pathology was present at 42.86% patients, of whom a 83.33% were peripheral nervous system disease. The total of the sample needed respiratory physiotherapy and a 72.32% motor physiotherapy.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>In our study, a high number of patients have needed rehabilitation treatment in order to get functional recovery, highlighting the development of post-COVID neurological pathology. Physiatrists need objective tools in the assessment of these patients that predict the results of prosthetic programs to increase patient safety and efficiency of prosthetic rehabilitation programs. Given the need to update scientific knowledge in this field, we have carried out a review of the literature with the aim of defining a proposal for tools that facilitate decision-making in the indication of prosthetic rehabilitation in these patients. A bibliographic search strategy has been carried out using the scientific databases PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Cochrane Library. Ahumada","doi":"10.1016/j.rh.2023.100809","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rh.2023.100809","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Introduction</h3><p>Falls are among the most frequent complications following stroke (CVA), and have a negative impact on rehabilitation.</p></div><div><h3>Objectives</h3><p>To study the incidence, circumstances, and consequences of falls in stroke patients up to 12<!--> <!-->months after starting outpatient kinetic treatment.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>Prospective design, case series. Consecutive sampling. Patients admitted to the day hospital between June 2019 and May 2020. Included: adults with a diagnosis of first supratentorial stroke and functional ambulatory category score ≥<!--> <!-->3. Exclusion criteria: other condition affecting locomotion. Main variables: number of falls, circumstances, and consequences. Clinical, demographic, and functional characteristics were measured.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>Twenty-one subjects were included, 13 suffered at least one fall. The subjects reported 41 falls: 15 were to the most affected side, 35 inside the home, 28 without the indicated equipment, they were alone when the event occurred on 29 occasions, and in two situations medical assistance was required. There were statistically significant differences (<em>P</em> <!-->&lt;<!--> <!-->.05) in functional performance (balance, gait velocity) between those who fell and those who did not. No significant differences were found between gait endurance and falls.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusion</h3><p>More than half suffered a fall, alone, to the weaker side, and without the appropriate equipment.
