This has been the main research topic in smart microgrids. A correlation exists between the motor load and the starting current since a motor usually needs a larger starting current to overcome inertia. Both the power needed to start the load and the higher reactive power demand during the starting procedure are at the origin of the increased current. The current decreases to the nominal value for the specific load gradually after the motor starts. This relationship is essential for figuring out the dimensions of electrical components and protecting the grid and motor from harm. Depending on the load, the switch-on surge current is greater than two to ten times the rated full load current. Energy storage systems can make up for the higher power needed to protect the load and the grid connection. It makes more sense to use tuned compensating capacitors to reduce the reactive power required to reduce the inrush current. The primary focus of this work is the selection, calculation, and switching of the capacitor bank for reactive power compensation. Following the previous research, in this paper, the smaller 2HP induction motor load is examined. The capacitances are calculated, turned on to offset the starting transient, and then disengaged once the machine reaches operating speed. This is done by using a point-on switching technique that lowers the switching transient.","PeriodicalId":38993,"journal":{"name":"WSEAS Transactions on Power Systems","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141677495","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It comprises a photovoltaic generator (PV) that supplies power to a solar pumping system, driven by a permanent magnet direct current motor (PMDC) via a DC-DC Buck converter. Consequently, the objective is to maintain steady operation with continuous power supply despite changes in two environmental parameters, including solar irradiation and absolute temperature. The maximal power extraction of the PV panel using the usual perturbation and observation (P&O) technique achieves this objective. This method must provide appropriate duty cycle control for the DC-DC buck converter when the user-selected Fixed-Step Size (FSS) is used, unfortunately, selecting an insufficient fixed-step size led to a power ripple issue with the PV panel. Incorporating a new Variable Step-Size (VSS) into the traditional P&O algorithm shows the occurrence of the enhanced P&O-MPPT control approach. The proposed technique is validated by utilizing the PROTEUS/ISIS software. For various climatic situations, the results demonstrate that the proposed control technique is preferable to the one based on the standard P&O-MPPT.","PeriodicalId":38993,"journal":{"name":"WSEAS Transactions on Power Systems","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140980277","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These sources are connected to the utility grid using a suitable synchronization method. It requires accurate information on grid voltage magnitude and phase angle. But the presence of harmonics, DC Offset, and voltage unbalances makes the synchronization process more challenging. Conventionally synchronous reference frame (SRF)- PLL is implemented for this purpose, however, it has a problem with 100Hz ripple during distorted grid conditions. A double integration method (DIM) is administered for the synchronization of a 3-phase inverter under non-ideal grid conditions. It is important for DIM implementation to remove the DC offset or integrating constants of pure integrators without involving any phase shift. This method is also compared with conventional SRF-PLL based on mathematical modelling and simulations using a MATLAB/Simulink toolbox. The results are verified based on ideal and non–ideal grid conditions and also tested on grid-connected 3-phase Inverter.","PeriodicalId":38993,"journal":{"name":"WSEAS Transactions on Power Systems","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140982321","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Scenario planning and modelling activities often focus on restricted parameters and numbers to justify wind power plant performance. To better understand possible pathways to scaling up the distributed wind market in Albania, a deep and multidimensional calculations based on Monte Carlo analysis, using RETScreen and wind JEDI model, to assess socio-economic impact as a function of turbine output power, operating and maintenance cost and many other financial inputs by testing different WT (i.e., VESTAS, GAMESA, W2E and NORDEX) with rated power from 3.45 MW up to 4.5MW applied on LCOE, NPV, SPP, equity payback, B-C, after-tax IRR on equity and effects of GHG credits extended at a sensitivity range of ±35% is scientifically performed. From the simulation results LCOE reaches a minimal value of €43.48/MWh, if the debt rate is 99 % and a debt interest rate of 5.0%, a TotCapEx of €828/MW (-35 % less expenditures) indexed as the best scenario. For the base case scenario LCOE results €62.79/MWh, when applying a debt rate of 80% and a TotCapEx of (€1274/MW), while in the worst-case scenario LCOE impart a maximal value of €87.63/MWh if a TotCapEx of €1720/MW (+35 % more expenditures) and a share of 52 % debt rate is applied. Local annual economic impact (m€) during construction period and operating period evaluated in the wind JEDI model result around m€ 89.92 and m€ 23.54, respectively. As a conclusion, wind power plants (WPP), installed in low wind zones (Albania and many other EU countries) would be of interest if an electricity export rate of 110€/MWh, and a GHG credit rate of €50/tCO2 were accepted.","PeriodicalId":38993,"journal":{"name":"WSEAS Transactions on Power Systems","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141128381","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since each level switching angle is not neatly prepared, most conventional inverters cannot produce optimized waveforms. To attain an adequate voltage profile, we should indeed closely review the switching angle arrangement to attain a minimal Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). This work focuses on Cascaded H Bridge (CHB) multilevel inverters with asymmetrical configuration operating under a low frequency (LF) scheme. This work discusses various methods of harmonic mitigation techniques that comes under the LF scheme which includes the finest switching angle optimizations for generating various levels. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the topologies is investigated by minimizing lower-order harmonics and THD. THD is compared for various mitigation techniques for seven and nine-level configurations. The proposed configurations are simulated by employing MATLAB/Simulink. THD is calculated theoretically and evaluated by comparing it to simulated results for the suggested inverters. Additionally, thermal simulations of the configuration are carried out in PLECS to estimate power losses and efficiency. The suggested configurations are examined utilizing OPAL-RT (4510) test bed and the outcomes are included.","PeriodicalId":38993,"journal":{"name":"WSEAS Transactions on Power Systems","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140994959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, appropriate energy management techniques should be adopted to realize optimal benefits. Many BESS operations’ optimization approaches are available in RES with various techno-economic, environmental, and dispatch-related outputs. BESS operations are optimized using different methods. Past studies have mainly concentrated on certain renewable energy systems designed for specific purposes, such as distributed generation or large-scale. This paper thoroughly examines and analyzes various battery management systems by considering the relationship between the optimization methodology and the intended application. This strategy enables the identification of connections between favored optimization approaches and specific optimization goals. Some approaches are more effective in solving economic goal optimizations, whereas others are commonly used for technical goal optimizations. The selection of the solution methodology is also demonstrated to be highly contingent upon the degree of mathematical formulation of the problem. An analysis is conducted to assess the strengths and limitations of the described optimization techniques. The conclusion is that hybrid approaches, which combine the benefits of multiple techniques, will significantly impact the creation of future operating strategies. The utilization of wind and solar energy has rapidly increased in MGs. However, due to the uncertainties these systems present, accurately predicting energy generation remains challenging. This necessitates modeling the system’s random variables (such as renewable resource output and possibly load demand) using appropriate and feasible methods. The primary objective of this article is to determine the optimal setpoints for renewable energy sources (RES) and all elements involved in the MG, minimizing the total operation cost. The system comprises wind turbines (WT), photovoltaic panels (PV), energy storage systems (ESS), and electric vehicles (EVs). Weibull distribution and the Hottel and Liu Jordan equations are employed to determine the potential available capacity of wind and solar energy generation, respectively. ESS is utilized to enhance MG performance. For optimal management, a comprehensive mathematical model with practical constraints for each MG element is extracted. An efficient Population-Based Incremental Learning (PBIL) metaheuristic method is proposed to solve the optimization objective in an MG, demonstrating that this energy management system optimizes and effectively coordinates DG and ESS energy generation considering economic considerations. Finally, PBIL is compared with a commonly used model, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), across various scenarios, analyzing and evaluating their outcomes, showcasing a reduction in operation costs.","PeriodicalId":38993,"journal":{"name":"WSEAS Transactions on Power Systems","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140657196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Current control of a DC drive is very desirable because by controlling the current, the torque is controlled. Moreover, current control can be used to prevent large damaging armature currents during start-up. A good current loop is very important when setting up a DC drive. When the control of the current loop is good, the steady state motor current should respond exactly with the reference current, and the transient response to the step change in the reference current should be fast and well-damped. This paper presents two different types of current controller converters that are commonly used in DC motor drives. The first converter is a 4-quadratic switch-mode DC-DC converter, while the second controller is a 3-phase controller rectifier. Both current converters were simulated using Matlab Simulink, where a PI current controller for the inner loop current control DC motor controls these converters. The PI controller was designed based on the Bode plot frequency response method. In this research, the design procedure was based on the small signal model and then, verified using a large signal model. The simulation result showed that the performance using a 4-quadrant DC-DC converter gave better performance than a 3-phase rectifier.","PeriodicalId":38993,"journal":{"name":"WSEAS Transactions on Power Systems","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140755052","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

High-power applications are increasingly concentrating on converter technology. This growing importance may be attributed to its improved output waveforms over the 3- carrier-based sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM). To control and modulate multi-level inverters, many techniques are employed. These methods are categorized based on how frequently they switch. The ripple current rating, capacitance value, and voltage balance in the DC bus capacitors are all impacted by the pulse width modulation techniques. It is crucial to select the modulation method based on the current control requirements, as this determines the output voltage waveform’s harmonic content. SVPWM is gradually becoming more and more popular in industries because of its improved dc bus utilization and ease of digital realization.
