The country recovered from its severe economic depression that lasted from 2014 to 2020, but still faces economic challenges. The emergence of left-wing governments in Latin America, including in Brazil and Chile, has provided a friendlier regional environment for Maduro, undermining earlier US efforts to rally against him. Meanwhile, Maduro's alliances with countries such as Russia, China and Iran continue to play a significant role in the country's geopolitical landscape.","PeriodicalId":38903,"journal":{"name":"Strategic Comments","volume":" ","pages":"iv - v"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46157675","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

President Mohamed Bazoum was placed under house arrest, and the junta appears to have a firm grip on power. Mediation efforts for a return to constitutional order continue. Mastery of advanced technologies like artificial-intelligence, microelectronics and quantum-information systems will determine military and economic pre-eminence in the future. The US has imposed significant restrictions on China’s access to sophisticated technology, and it has adopted industrial policies and established multilateral frameworks to exclude China from certain technology ecosystems. Meanwhile, China aims to achieve world leadership in semiconductor-dependent technologies and plans to accelerate its development of indigenous capabilities to overcome the technology barrier raised by the US.","PeriodicalId":38903,"journal":{"name":"Strategic Comments","volume":"29 1","pages":"vi - viii"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48971537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
