These include road signs, symbols, and also road markings. Roadside advertisements and the presence of police all communicate visually. Road safety has become a major concern worldwide due to the high prevalence of death and injury among road users. This study was anchored on the social cognitive theory, the safety culture theory, and the uses and gratification theory. The study used a pragmatic philosophical paradigm with a convergent parallel design of mixed-method research. Stratified sampling and simple random sampling were used to draw the target population of 399 Boda-boda motorcyclists from the four cities in Kenya, namely Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru, a final sample of 399 Boda-boda motorcyclists was made. Quantitative data was collected from the motorcyclists by use of semi-structured questionnaires while key informant interviews were used to collect the qualitative data from experts. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze quantitative data while qualitative data was analyzed using thematic data analysis. The study findings are that visibility and comprehension of traffic signs and markings correlate positively with favourable attitudes toward road safety and self-reported compliance with traffic regulations. The results revealed that traffic visual communication can create synergies, amplify impact, and drive sustainable change in Boda-boda riders' road safety practices. In conclusion, there is a need for innovative multifaceted communication intervention to enhance safety amongst Boda-boda motorcyclists in Kenyan cities.  ","PeriodicalId":388567,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Linguistics, Literary and Communication Studies","volume":"51 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141652186","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Anchored in classic theoretical approaches to communicative competence and the more recent theory of translingualism, this study endeavours to answer this broad question: What are the perceptions of university students on TL in the lecture room ecology in four key learning processes - retaining attention, success in learning, interacting with the instructor, and transmitting knowledge? To respond to this query, quantitative data was gathered through a questionnaire from 80 students at a major university in Kenya. The results show overall positive responses for TL in the lecture room ecology regarding solidarity and status relationships. For instance, participants expressed a heightened ability to retain attention when instructors employed a judicious mix of languages, resulting in increased engagement and a more favourable learning experience. These and other research findings are relevant for the ongoing language political debate on Kenya’s language-in-education policy concerning new possibilities and approaches to translingual pedagogy, which emphasises the collaboration of languages and abilities that a person draws on to make meaning and communicate effectually – their full linguistic repertoire.","PeriodicalId":388567,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Linguistics, Literary and Communication Studies","volume":"50 30","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139150970","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite idioms being extensively studied in the African context, showing the importance of idiomatic competence, studies on how Zanzibari students comprehend idioms are still limited. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the extent of comprehension of English idioms among university students in Unguja to establish if this would enhance their proficiency in English. The study adopted a mixed-method approach and a descriptive research design. The researcher used questionnaires and cloze tests to collect data from 180 respondents from three universities in Zanzibar; the State University of Zanzibar, Sumait University, and Zanzibar University. The findings revealed that the respondents’ performance in idiom comprehension was below average. The findings add to linguistic theory and practice, specifically to the studies on idioms.","PeriodicalId":388567,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Linguistics, Literary and Communication Studies","volume":"9 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139260841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Suffix ordering pertinent to verb extensions has been controversial since the twentieth century. This is because languages display general and specific morphological, phonological, semantic, or/and syntactic linguistics features of affix ordering of verb extension. Some scholars argue that the order of suffixes is triggered by semantic scope, others claim that suffix combinations are triggered by syntax and morphology, and another group agrees that is triggered by the default templatic formative approach. Some of the morphemes in Hangaza regarding suffix ordering cannot be sufficiently explained in the present schematized approaches, this needs analysis. The research used the Mirror Principle and Morph Ordering Theories for data analysis. The former captures the scopes of morpheme ordering with each of their meaning. The suffix with narrow scopes appears closer to the root than the one with a wide scope. The latter was selected for explaining silent semantic scopes of the combined morphemes when the former seemed inadequate such as in Bantu languages. Documentary review and unstructured interviews were the instruments of data collection. The paper found that the tense – aspect, tone, semantic scope, morphotactic, personal pronouns, and phonology are factors for suffix ordering in Hangaza language. This paper recommends that there is a need for careful study of non-linguistic factors that may trigger affix ordering in our natural languages to see how they behave in making morphs to be ordered or attached from the verb root or stem.","PeriodicalId":388567,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Linguistics, Literary and Communication Studies","volume":"15 10","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132546300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Homographs are words with the same spelling but different pronunciations and semantics scope. The paper demonstrates that most of the semantics lecturers of Tanzania confuse English homographs with non-English homographs. For instance, 75% of lecturers of semantics acknowledge that the lexeme bank and present are English homographs. Such perception is incomplete which has motivated the present study to examine groping an indulgence on homographs to instructors. The study qualitatively applied the interpretive paradigm to five Tanzania Universities. Documentary reviews and questionnaires were the instruments of data collection. The analysis was done by using Referential Theory which articulates the context of the situation in which the lexeme is articulated and in which the meaning reflects that which is being articulated. It was found that most of the Lecturers of semantics in Tanzania’s Universities confuse English homographs with non-homographic words and that what they instruct in their lectures is incomplete; thus, words that are not English homographs are acknowledged as English homographs. Moreover, some lecturers of semantics confuse stress on the syllable with homographic words; others do not know the qualification of a certain word to be homograph. It was concluded that Lecturers of semantics in Tanzania’s Universities should admit continuous reading and training on any matter of facts pertinent to their area of specialization. This would make them competent in the content they lecture in classes.","PeriodicalId":388567,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Linguistics, Literary and Communication Studies","volume":"230 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127952237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the syllabification in Olusuba, just as in other languages, a principle of well-formedness is factored in by the speakers of the language through their use of brain faculties responsible for language formation and use. Well-formedness is understood to be a by-product of competing universal constraints – the constraints outdo their counterparts in the ranking, which is language specific, in the formation of an output. The job of constraint is, therefore, is to block all except the correct output. My analysis of syllabification in Olusuba is couched within the constraint interaction, a tenet of the Optimality Theory (OT) by Prince and Smolensky (2004). Data for analysis was collected through audio-recording of continuous speeches in natural settings. Audio-recorded speeches were then played back and transcribed using phonemic mode of transcription. From the transcript a corpus construct was made. The construct was a list of Olusuba words. Three native speakers of Olusuba were at different moments instructed to read naturally the words constituting the corpus construct by taking a breath word after word. The analysis of the data was descriptively done within the framework of OT’s principle of well-formedness which is grounded on constraint interaction. The findings of this study indicate that other than the universal syllable structure CV, Olusuba displays other syllable patterns formed from competing Universal Grammar (UG) representational constraints. Findings for this study give an insight to the morphophonological structure of Olusuba words; enable linguists understand internal structure of Olusuba syllables and enlighten linguists on phonotactic constraints behind syllabification of Olusuba words.","PeriodicalId":388567,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Linguistics, Literary and Communication Studies","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123520223","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although each noun (or noun stem) in the majority of Bantu languages is classified into one of 15–18 noun classes, Lutsotso language captures 21 classes. While it is frequently hard to distinguish between noun classes semantically, basic meanings or semantic trends of subsets of members may frequently be identified. Lutsotso nouns consist of a noun prefix and a root. The two elements of the Lutsotso nominal are crucial because the prefix, for example, denotes the class. Complex agreement morphology in the noun phrase and the sentence is controlled by class membership, which is indicated morphologically on the noun by a class prefix. As such, the prefix functions as a classifier. Agreement is a type of syntactic connection in which a word's or phrase's inflectional behaviour is dictated by the features of a nominal element to which it is closely connected. Number, person, case, and gender are examples of agreement markers. The class to which the head noun belongs must be reflected throughout the phrase in Bantu languages. This is accomplished through the use of concordial prefixes, which have distinct forms for the parts of speech to which they are attached. There is no discrete number morphology in Bantu languages, but the noun class system mediates number; numerous noun classes are paired according to number, forming singular-plural pairs. The Noun (N) component element of the simple sentence exists as a complex Noun phrase (NP) with nominal qualities indicated by affixes. Accordingly, concord prefixes control and impact the words connected with them in the Lutsotso noun phrase. The study discovered that concord prefixes sustain the grammatical relationship between the head noun and the rest of the noun phrase.","PeriodicalId":388567,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Linguistics, Literary and Communication Studies","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131323756","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Statistics show that South Africa has one of the highest rates of HIV/Aids in the world, with a prevalence of 18.9% of adults afflicted, and women much more vulnerable to the infection than men. Although anti-retrovirals are widely available, social injustices such as poverty and the low status of women contribute to this gendered disparity. In the novel Beauty’s Gift (2008), author Sindiwe Magona relates a narrative in which four women lose their best friend to Aids, prompting them to take decisive action as women who play a significant role within the domain of the family. The Aids activist Zackie Achmat has called this novel “one of the most important books about HIV/AIDS in our country.” This article examines the fictional representation of the plight of HIV-positive women in South Africa through an analysis of the characterisation and the author’s representations of socio-cultural injustice suffered by these women. The paper further explores the advocacy and agency of these women characters during the time of sickness. With respect to stigma and discrimination, in the context of HIV and Aids, I argue that despair and hopelessness thrive in situations where women are plagued by sickness. I further argue that shame and secrecy are social conditions that perpetuate the spread of HIV, leading to a common response of silence. Lastly, the representations of bereavement and grief are analysed in this article. My examination of the agency of women characters in the chosen novel is underpinned by the theory of African feminism, which engages with, critiques and develops Western feminism, influenced by African women’s resistance to Western hegemony and its legacy within African culture. Charged with the duties of transforming societies through both intellectual and pragmatic approaches, African feminists illuminate ways women manage and challenge multiple oppressions. Using this theoretical lens enables me to reveal ways in which Magona elicits identification and empathy on the part of readers, which can assist in stimulating positive change as depicted in Beauty’s Gift, thus re-imagining and reconfiguring the Rainbow Nation. \u0000 ","PeriodicalId":388567,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Linguistics, Literary and Communication Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130142294","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
