{"title":"Prevalence of coronary risk factors in load transport drivers.","authors":"Beatriz Bastos Braga, Fabrícia Geralda Ferreira, Hamilton Henrique Teixeira Reis, João Carlos Bouzas Marins","doi":"10.47626/1679-4435-2022-695","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.47626/1679-4435-2022-695","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Introduction: </strong>Non-communicable diseases are the main cause of mortality worldwide, with risk factors that contribute to their development, including those associated with work activity.</p><p><strong>Objectives: </strong>To evaluate the prevalence of risk factors related to the development of non-communicable diseases and their relationship with work activity in professional load transport drivers.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>Eighty male truck drivers were assessed (39.73±10.91 years) with 15.22±12.09 years of professional experience. In addition to collection of anthropometric data and measurement of blood data, drivers answered three questionnaires: Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire, Coronary Risk, and Finnish Diabetes Risk Score. Descriptive and inferential analyses were performed using Pearson correlation and Student's <i>t</i> test, considering a significance level of p < 0.05.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>The results showed a prevalence of arterial hypertension of 31.30% and a medium coronary risk (46.30%), a factor that was directly associated with time of professional performance (r = 0.519; p < 0.05). The data were analyzed using absolute and relative frequency.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>We identified 8 cases of tobacco growers with green tobacco sickness, whose sociodemographic and occupational profiles and health habits were described.</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>The data obtained in this study corroborate the existing literature on tobacco growers. {"title":"Occupational stress and common mental disorders: how do coping strategies work?","authors":"Elis Souza Machado, Tânia Maria de Araújo, Camila Carvalho de Sousa, Aline Macedo Carvalho Freitas, Fernanda de Oliveira Souza, Iracema Lua","doi":"10.47626/1679-4435-2022-680","DOIUrl":"10.47626/1679-4435-2022-680","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Introduction: </strong>Coping strategies are described as devices capable of minimizing the effects of occupational stress on workers' mental health.</p><p><strong>Objectives: </strong>To evaluate the association between occupational stressors and occurrence of common mental disorders and how coping strategies work in this relationship.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>This is a cross-sectional study with 3,343 healthcare workers from six municipalities in the state of Bahia, Brazil. Common mental disorders were measured by the Self-Reporting Questionnaire, and occupational stressors by the Job Content Questionnaire. Coping strategies included physical activity, leisure activities, social support at work, alcohol consumption, and smoking. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed, stratified by sex.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Occupational stressors were associated with common mental disorders, more strongly among women. The practice of physical activity contributed to reduce the prevalence of common mental disorders, regardless of occupational stressors. Leisure activities were associated with lower prevalence of common mental disorders, but without statistical significance, losing relevance in the presence of occupational stressors. Social support and smoking or drinking habits were not associated with common mental disorders and did not influence the relationship with occupational stressors.</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Occupational stressors are associated with common mental disorders, with emphasis on high demand, even after adjusted for coping strategies. The relationship between occupational stressors and mental is corroborated, with greater female vulnerability, as well as the role of positive coping strategies in protecting mental health. {"title":"Profile of workers receiving disability benefits for depressive conditions in south Santa Catarina, Brazil.","authors":"Alaor Ernst Schein, Amanda Gemelli, Bruna de Fátima Oliveira Wey, Sarah Galatto Cancillier, Kristian Madeira","doi":"10.47626/1679-4435-2022-685","DOIUrl":"10.47626/1679-4435-2022-685","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Introduction: </strong>In recent years, mental disorders have remained the third leading cause of sick-pay benefits due to incapacity for work in Brazil.</p><p><strong>Objectives: </strong>To assess the profile and outcomes of workers receiving sick pay for depression through the Criciúma unit of the Brazilian National Social Security Institute (Instituto Nacional do Seguro Social, INSS).</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>The study was carried out using data obtained from the Electronic System Portal of the INSS Citizen Information Service of Criciúma, state of Santa Catarina. A total of 343 individuals were selected over a 1-year period. We then analyzed all new benefits granted over a 6-year period.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Mild depressive episode was the disorder that prompted the most disability benefits. The mean age was 42 years, with a predominance of female beneficiaries. Overall, 56% of beneficiaries were granted at least one new disability benefit. Mental health disorders were among the leading causes. The duration of new benefits was significantly longer.</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>The typical profile is that of a 42-year-old woman, gainfully employed, earning one to two times the minimum wage, with low educational attainment, who is deemed unfit for work due to a mild depressive episode. Older age was a risk factor for being awarded a new benefit. Benefits classified as due to a more serious condition and those awarded subsequent to the first benefit had a longer duration. However, there are no publications on physicians' mortality in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil.</p><p><strong>Objectives: </strong>To describe mortality distribution and potential years of life lost from 2006 to 2015 among physicians who lived in Espírito Santo.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>This is a descriptive study of secondary data from the Mortality Information System of the Brazilian Ministry of Health. The distribution of socio-demographic variables and of basic cause of death was studied by absolute and relative frequencies. Potential years of life lost in each death were considered the years remaining from age at death up to the age limit of 70 years.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>There were 20 deaths of female physicians (14.5%) and 118 (85.5%) of male physicians, with predominance of whites (87.9%) and married (56%) individuals. The main causes of death were neoplasms (39.1%), diseases of the circulatory system (19.6%), and external causes (19.6%). The majority of female and male deaths occurred from 60 to 69 years, but average death was significantly lower among women compared to men (respectively 58.3 and 67.0 years). Potential years of life lost totaled 1,226 years, with a mean of 14.6, which was greater in women (20.4) compared to men (13.4).</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Mortality trends observed in the general population were also present among physicians in Espírito Santo. However, contrary to the general population pattern, average death age was lower in women. The Notifiable Diseases Information System shows that the number of notifications of accidents involving venomous animals increases every year. In Brazil, accidents involving venomous animals are the number one cause of human intoxications. The public health importance of accidents and their consequential importance for workers is clearly illustrated by the more than 100,000 accidents and almost 200 deaths that occur annually.</p><p><strong>Objectives: </strong>To observe and analyze the profile of accidents involving venomous animals in Brazil's Federal District.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>A retrospective descriptive case series study of data from four databases containing information on accidents involving venomous animals. In addition to analyzing each one, they were also compared to each other.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>A total of 11,376 accidents involving venomous animals from 2009 to 2019 were registered in the Federal District. There were 363 occupational accidents and zero deaths in the period. There were discrepancies between each of the databases analyzed.</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Subnotification and discrepancies should be better evaluated and subsequently resolved by the managers of each database. Dorsopathies have a multifactorial etiology, including those related to occupational risk factors.</p><p><strong>Objectives: </strong>To analyze the factors associated with sick leave due to dorsopathies among bus drivers from a public transport company.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>This was a cross-sectional, analytical study with information from a database of 2,229 professional bus drivers from a company in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. The study period was from 2016 to 2017. Independent variables were sex, age group, length of service, and work shift; the outcome was the history of sick leave due to dorsopathies in the study period. Logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the factors associated with the outcome.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Mean sample age was 47.33 years, and mean length of service was 8.65 years. Most participants were men (98.06%) and worked during the day (85.9%). There was a 17% prevalence of sick leave in the study period, with an average of 1.86 days per medical certificate. Age group was the only variable with a statistically significant distribution, with a reduced probability of sick leave due to dorsopathies in those aged ≥ 40 years.</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Younger workers were more likely to be on sick leave due to dorsopathies than older workers. However, low perception of risk has a negative impact on compliance.</p><p><strong>Objectives: </strong>To qualitatively characterize exposure to ionizing radiation and the compliance with anti-radiation personal protective equipment and personal dosimeters by workers, at a university hospital in Portugal. To investigate the impact of attending health examinations or participating in training activities on this compliance.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>Cross-sectional study design administering a questionnaire constructed by the authors to all healthcare workers exposed to ionizing radiation (n = 708).</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>A total of 295 workers completed the questionnaire. They worked in 16 different services using eight different types of ionizing radiation-emitting equipment, the most common of which were fluoroscopes. Lead aprons and thyroid protectors were the anti-radiation personal protective equipment with greatest compliance (61.7 and 55.6%, respectively), while fewer respondents used protective glasses (8.1%) and lead gloves (0.7%). Regular use of a dosimeter was reported by 78.3% of workers and use was associated with participation in training and with attending health examinations. The most frequent reasons given for not wearing anti-radiation personal protective equipment were unavailability (glasses and gloves), presence of a protective barrier, and discomfort. Spatial analysis of cluster detection and point density was performed using kernel techniques and estimates.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>The recorded cases were concentrated in the southeastern (40.6%) and southern regions (28.1%), and a small increase occurred between 2011 and 2014 (53.9%). The etiological classification was predominantly hepatitis C virus (45.3%) and B virus (45.1%).</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Reports of viral hepatitis due to occupational accidents have increased in Brazil in recent years, with a higher density in the southeastern and southern regions, especially viruses B and C.
