In addition to existing risk factors, the COVID-19 pandemic introduced new ones, such as fear of infection and concern about the availability of personal protective equipment.</p><p><strong>Objectives: </strong>This study's purpose was to verify the prevalence and correlates of burnout syndrome among health professionals in the context of the pandemic.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>This quantitative study was conducted between April and June 2021 using the Google Forms platform. A semi-structured questionnaire and the <i>Questionário para la Evaluación del Syndrome de Quemarse por el Trabajo</i> were applied.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>A total of 93 health professionals participated. Those who fought on the frontline against COVID-19 were younger and had less professional experience, longer work hours, daily contact with a greater number of patients, lower scores in the disillusionment dimension, and higher scores in the emotional exhaustion dimension. Significant correlations were found between age and disillusionment, emotional exhaustion, and indolence. Additionally, actions for the prevention of these complications are described. For the review, several databases, such as Science Direct, MEDLINE, Springer, PubMed, Redalyc, EBSCO, SciELO, and Scopus, were examined. There was the need to extend the search timeframe from 5 years to 10 years. The studies found consisted mainly of review articles, showing an emphasis on public health and a high frequency of possible physical effects on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. At the mental level, the presence of cases of anxiety, depression and stress were mentioned. As for alternatives for the prevention of these effects, the importance of creating public policies for health promotion and disease prevention was highlighted. {"title":"Physical fitness profile of military lifeguards.","authors":"Francine de Oliveira, Victor Gonçalves Corrêa Neto, Ricardo Castro Ferreira de Mello, Humberto Miranda","doi":"10.47626/1679-4435-2023-1123","DOIUrl":"10.47626/1679-4435-2023-1123","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Introduction: </strong>Throughout a lifeguard's career, regardless of age, the physical demands of performing a water rescue are likely to remain constant.</p><p><strong>Objectives: </strong>To establish a physical fitness profile by age group of a sample composed of professional beach lifeguards who regularly engage in physical activity.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>One hundred and seventy-two lifeguards were initially recruited for this study. Data from 99 male lifeguards were provided for analysis. Anthropometric measurements, lower limb strength, and handgrip measurements were taken at the initial visit. During a second visit, running tests were performed on sand. All testing procedures followed the same predefined sequence for all individuals.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>One-way analysis of variance with post hoc Bonferroni or Kruskal-Wallis adjusted analysis was performed to assess differences between age groups depending on the exact variable. The significance level was set at p ≤ 0.05. There were statistically significant differences in all power and velocity performance parameters as well as body fat percentage with better results found in the younger age groups (20-29;30-39) compared to an older age group (40-49). However, there were no statistically significant differences between the groups for handgrip strength.</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>The results of the present study indicate significant differences in physical fitness between different age groups. The 12-item General Health Questionnaire was used to assess common mental disorders among emergency health care workers (n = 100). We examined the relationships between common mental disorders and COVID-19 pandemic-related variables, including availability of personal protective equipment, exposure to violence, discrimination, harassment, and confidence in the workplace to handle the pandemic. We used multivariate Poisson regression with robust variance to estimate prevalence ratios for common mental disorders.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Overall, 50% (95%CI 39.8-60.1) of participants had a common mental disorder. In addition, 71% reported being victims of at least one type of violence during the COVID-19 pandemic. Higher risks ofcommon mental disorders were found among those who reported lacking personal protective equipment, being victims of discrimination, violence, or harassment, and reporting less confidence in the workplace to handle the pandemic. Outcome was the impact of oral health on daily activities, determined by the Oral Impacts on Daily Performance indicator, and independent variables were sociodemographic characteristics, normative oral health conditions, access to and use of dental services, self-reported oral morbidity, self-perception of oral health, and absenteeism because of dental reasons. All data were analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics, using the chi-squared test for heterogeneity and linear trend. The significance level used was set at 5%, with a 95% CI.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Participants experienced at least one day of work impaired by dental problems in the six months prior to the survey. Prevalence of dental absenteeism was 7.9%. Thus, analyzing risk factors from approaches such as the gender perspective may be an alternative.</p><p><strong>Objectives: </strong>To analyze risk factors in a health entity with a high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in upper limbs and to describe possible intervention measures according to scientific evidence, from a gender perspective.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>This is an analytical study. A questionnaire was applied to 93 workers on demographic aspects, presence of factors related to the environment, the task, and the organization, extra-work activities related to musculoskeletal disorders in the upper limbs. Chi-square was used to identify significant relationships between the sex variable and individual, occupational, and non-occupational factors, corroborated by Fisher's test and prevalence ratio. According to the associations identified, a literature review was carried out to establish possible strategies.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Significant relationships were found between the sex variable and task-related factors such as the presence of repetitive or sudden movements (p < 0.05), supporting postulates of labor segregation. According to the literature consulted, the effectiveness of activities such as physical preparation and adaptation of the workplace under professional guidance, training activities, and breaks is discussed. It is important to review organizational factors.</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>By identifying significant relationships between the sex variable and task-related factors, the present study contributes to the postulate of labor segregation, in terms of concentration of female labor in activities with particular working conditions. Data were collected from noise-induced hearing loss notifications filed with the Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação in Brazil. The absolute and relative frequencies of sociodemographic variables and occupational characteristics were assessed.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>A total of 7,413 cases of noise-induced hearing loss were notified in Brazil. Workers in industrial production were the most affected (56.4%). There was a higher prevalence in White (45.4%), male (87.3%) participants aged between 50 and 59 years (42.5%) from the Southeast region (43%). In this study, 3.5% of participants were temporarily removed from their position, 42.6% reported using personal protective equipment, and 65.7% did not use collective protective equipment. The most prevalent type of noise was continuous noise (33%).</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Noise-induced hearing loss is prevalent among Brazilian workers and varies according to each occupational group.
