Health professionals have contributed with all their abilities to provide adequate medical care in a scenario of great uncertainty and with many difficulties. The objective of this article is to investigate the experiences narrated by the residents of the San Ignacio University Hospital, in Bogotá DC, Colombia, during the pandemic. A qualitative study was carried out in which 15 in-depth interviews were conducted with residents of different medical specialties, which allowed us to explore the difficulties, challenges, opportunities, and capacities they have faced during the pandemic. Through a thematic analysis, the following categories were identified: \"Working with COVID-19\", \"Building relationships\", \"Learning during a pandemic\", and \"How did residents feel?\". We found an increase in workload, limitations in the learning tools, overwhelming feelings and augmented tensions in work and social interactions, all this due to the health system in crisis, the prioritization systems implemented, as well as the increase in the number of deaths despite the effort to preserve life. As a recommendation, we propose a reform to the Colombian residency program, with main emphasis on the academics and a greater recognition of the work they do, as well as providing them with tools that helps them manage their emotions for the maintenance of their well-being and mental health.</p>","PeriodicalId":38694,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Trabalho","volume":"22 4","pages":"e20241017"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11822973/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143434000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The patient's medical history, work activities, and examination findings indicated potential asbestos-related pleural plaques. Occupational exposure to harmful chemicals, including asbestos in talc products, poses serious health risks. Despite asbestos bans in many countries, Brazil experienced extensive asbestos usage until 2012-2015, with a complete ban taking effect in 2023. This report emphasizes the need for ongoing discussions on asbestos detection and strict enforcement of bans, while ensuring asbestos-free talcum powders to protect the health of beauty industry workers.</p>","PeriodicalId":38694,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Trabalho","volume":"22 4","pages":"e20241262"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11822979/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143434089","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is particularly true for nurses, for whom work has significant meaning. This study aims to explore how nurses' recognition of the meaning of their work is critical to their job performance. This scoping review was conducted using the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online, and American Psychological Association databases. The review included studies in Portuguese, English and Spanish published between 2016 and 2022. The final sample included 10 studies that reported characteristics related to the meaning of work: 56% were qualitative descriptive studies, 22% were cross-sectional, and 22% did not report their design. Most studies were conducted in Brazil (n = 6), followed by China, Japan, and Namibia. Articles were classified and analyzed according to the following categories: sample, description of values or attributes of the meaning of work, and hospital context. The study concludes that nurses perceive meaning in their work through affirmation; exchange of esteem; sharing of information; trust; autonomy; interpersonal relationships; communication; interpersonal relationships with patients; reciprocity; involvement; job satisfaction; opportunities for learning and development; recognition and moral integrity; affective commitment; and stress related to work hours.</p>","PeriodicalId":38694,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Trabalho","volume":"22 3","pages":"e20231116"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11595381/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142740533","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
