In distribution network, thousands of switching operations are done daily, leading to voltage and current transients. This article covers transients observed during switching of capacitor, transformers and cables in a Utility network at Medium Voltage levels. Instead of relying on analytical simulations, measurements were made at site using special probes and high speed oscilloscope to capture the over voltages and currents during switching of different elements. For comparison purposes, measurements were made with switching done using SF6 and Vacuum Breakers.","PeriodicalId":385912,"journal":{"name":"2018 2nd International Conference on Power, Energy and Environment: Towards Smart Technology (ICEPE)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129015825","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main goal of controller design is to control the excitation voltage of the synchronous generator. Comparison of response of the proposed controller and existing backstepping controller in presence of disturbance shows that it exhibits rapid response, smooth convergence and disturbance suppression. A standard third order model of synchronous generator is used to design the proposed controller.","PeriodicalId":385912,"journal":{"name":"2018 2nd International Conference on Power, Energy and Environment: Towards Smart Technology (ICEPE)","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132314334","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Improper operation and late response of control and protective device lead to cascaded events which if not attended properly and timely than blackout condition may arise. The witnessing reports on the past decades blackouts reveal this unavoidable truth. Among the several natural causes, protection system failure is one of them. In the past fifty years, several major blackouts were mandatory and transparently reported to the public. These reports helped researchers in their research paper to study and suggest various solutions for aforementioned problem. This paper tries to make cohesion with the series of events of power outage in human history and try to identify and categorize various causes of power system blackout.","PeriodicalId":385912,"journal":{"name":"2018 2nd International Conference on Power, Energy and Environment: Towards Smart Technology (ICEPE)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114891098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Managing EVs with vehicle-to-grid (V2G) scheme can help in softening electricity demand and making grid more reliable and economic. In this paper, plugged in EVs are managed to facilitate demand response (DR). The modeling of V2G network is performed based on the dynamical complex network methodology in which EVs are moving among different districts. It is clearly seen from the simulations that incoming EVs affect the DR stability as it carries new energy and storage facility into a district. The robustness of the technique is studied by varying the parameters such as rate of convergence and willingness to pay. Moreover, to further reduce the electricity price for the prosumers, peak clipping objective is introduced in the DR program. The main intension of the peak clipping objective is to control the charging/discharging of EVs during peak hours based on the available state-of-charge (SOC) of the fleets. Proposed DR program effectively reduces the electricity price during peak load hours and help EV owners maximize their profits.","PeriodicalId":385912,"journal":{"name":"2018 2nd International Conference on Power, Energy and Environment: Towards Smart Technology (ICEPE)","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122135309","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is mandatory to produce quality of power from solar systems by using efficient inverter control operation with robust and flexible control design. The objective of this paper is to present a comprehensive analysis on two adaptive current controllers used for inverter operation and compare their performances based on THD for the grid injected currents under system dynamics. These artificial intelligent adaptive controllers are driven by neural network concepts followed by reformed weight updation process which entirely helps in minimizing current harmonics generated due to the application of inverter units, non-linear loads or distorted grid. The proposed power and control models are simulated in MATLAB/Simulink platform and their usefulness are measured in terms of power quality.","PeriodicalId":385912,"journal":{"name":"2018 2nd International Conference on Power, Energy and Environment: Towards Smart Technology (ICEPE)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123542438","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Local defect resonance (LDR) is one of such method which is based on intensifying the vibrations at the contacting surfaces. This method is found to be very efficient in early detection of cracks or any flaws in the material. In the present work, nonlinear vibration response of a fibre metal laminate (FML) having a circular delamination is studied in order to determine its local defect resonance frequency. The concept of LDR has been provided analytically and is validated using linear steady state analysis of Glass Reinforced Aluminium (GLARE) model in ABAQUS 6.13 software. Moreover, the nonlinearities caused due to intermodulation and interaction terms are observed by performing explicit dynamic analysis at LDR, super harmonic and sub harmonic frequencies. The explicit dynamic analysis is performed by considering four different forcing frequencies in form of continuous periodic excitation. It was evident that the effect of these excitations can be seen from any point on the GLARE model, independent of its location. Subsequently, the proposed study is validated by considering two different locations of the delamination in the GLARE model. The results obtained from the present study will be of high importance in performing structural health monitoring and high resolution imaging of defects in fibre metal laminates.","PeriodicalId":385912,"journal":{"name":"2018 2nd International Conference on Power, Energy and Environment: Towards Smart Technology (ICEPE)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115307416","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The flexible link system resembles to a robotic arm having two flexible links governed by two DC motors. The mathematical model of the system is derived using Euler-Lagrange formula. A goal of Super Twisting (ST) controller is to regulate the position of both arms simultaneously having coupling effect. The STA of SOSMC attenuate the chattering effect that predominates in the classical sliding mode controller. The efficacy of the controller is checked in both simulation as well experimentally. The simulation is carried out using MATLAB R2016. The experiment is carried out on a laboratory setup using QUARC software (for hardware interfacing) and MATLAB R2016. The simulation as well experimental results are compared with conventional LQR controller and classical f-order sliding mode controller. The results endows that the 2-order SMC controller outperforms the other controllers.","PeriodicalId":385912,"journal":{"name":"2018 2nd International Conference on Power, Energy and Environment: Towards Smart Technology (ICEPE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129920738","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we have introduced a method for the detection of epileptic seizure in the improved complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN) domain. Here, firstly we have applied improved CEEMDAN on the electroencephalogram (EEG) signals to get the modes (Ms) and on these modes we will apply fractal dimension, generalized Hurst exponent and higher order statistical moments. All the calculated features of the EEG dataset which is available online are feed to two classifiers namely support vector machine (SVM) and k-nearest neighbors algorithm (kNN). The classification result of both the classifiers show a good accuracy of 100% in order to classify the normal and ictal as well as interictal and ictal EEG signals.","PeriodicalId":385912,"journal":{"name":"2018 2nd International Conference on Power, Energy and Environment: Towards Smart Technology (ICEPE)","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116169720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
