Meanwhile, an increase in ASD children has occurred almost all over the world, including in Indonesia. The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia reported more than 5,500 cases of child development disorders – including autism disorders – that received services at primary health centres during 2020 – 2021. Data on the prevalence of autistic disorders have been estimated to increase by 500 per year. The Disability and Assessment Centre Service in Pontianak records an increase in children with autistic disorders every year. This study aims to map the spread of autism in Pontianak. This is an observational study to map the distribution of ASD children in Pontianak. The data sources are medical records from Pontianak Psychiatry Hospital and registration at Disability and Assessment Centre Services, recorded from 2015 to 2020. This study collected 147 cases of autism recorded at both service units. After screening for data duplication, 143 cases were used. Only 83 cases had a complete address that can determine coordinates. Using the determination of coordinates based on addresses obtained using GPS and spatial analysis using ArcGIS, the results showed that the distribution pattern of ASD children in Pontianak City was clustered. Most ASD children live in densely populated areas. Urban environments with high population density have problems that can affect the health of their residents. Further research is needed to determine the relationship between environmental factors and the incidence of autism in Pontianak.","PeriodicalId":38537,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Public Health Medicine","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136363060","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet, regional genomic surveillance is often neglected, leading to the possible oversight of novel mutations by public health authorities. Our study used the Global Initiative on Sharing Avian Influenza Data (GISAID) database to analyse infection patterns in the state of Negeri Sembilan, and compare infection patterns to the state of Selangor, in Malaysia. We discuss the impact of rapid vaccination on resulting single nucleotide variants (SNVs) and identified novel sporadic mutations may affect viral fitness and pathogenicity. Four hundred and seventeen SARS-CoV-2 sequences extracted from Negeri Sembilan from July 2021 until June 2022. Infection patterns based on pangolin lineages from Negeri Sembilan was compared to infections of the same period from Selangor. SNVs from the spike protein were sorted by frequency, with the lowest frequency variant submitted for functional prediction using PredictSNP. Negeri Sembilan exhibited a comparable infection pattern to Selangor, but with fewer Omicron sequences which was postulated to occur due to the rapid vaccination strategies by Negeri Sembilan. Omicron outbreaks were associated with eased lockdowns and policy changes in December 2021. From our extracted data, seventy novel SNVs in the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 were extracted from this study. In silico predictions indicated five of the SNVs (S221L, L226S, V826L, C1240F and C1243F) to may cause functional defects to the spike protein. Rapid sequencing and analysis will aid policymaking for public health controls by detecting potential outbreaks within transient variants.","PeriodicalId":38537,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Public Health Medicine","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136363425","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 4,904 (male = 798, female = 4106) Malaysian adults participated in an online survey conducted in August- December 2021, just after the gradual release of lockdown restrictions. Psychological distress was assessed using the General Health Questionnaire-12; quality of life was measured by the WHOQOL-BREF. The Fear of COVID-19 scale and Brief COPE tool measured the level of COVID-19 fear and coping mechanisms, respectively. The prevalence of psychological distress among respondents was 37.6%, 95% confidence interval (36%—39%). Results suggested demographic indicators of higher psychological distress, specifically younger adults, childless adults, and adults with lower income. Prior medical diagnoses and COVID-19-related stressful events increased psychological distress. Results demonstrated an association between lower quality of life across all domains and higher psychological distress. Fear of COVID-19 and avoidant coping amplified distress while problem-focused and emotional coping mechanisms played protective roles. Pronounced and prolonged mental health deterioration was observed after the nationwide lockdown was relaxed; cost-effective interventions are needed to prevent new mental health issues and promote well-being and resilience.","PeriodicalId":38537,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Public Health Medicine","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136363277","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to determine the associations between sociodemographic characteristics, parental feeding practices, child eating behaviour, and dietary intake with the body weight status of ASD children in Kuching Division, Sarawak. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 124 ASD children (83.9% boys and 16.1% girls) aged 2-11 years, together with their caregivers. The weight and height of ASD children were taken, and body mass index-for-age z-score (BAZ) was computed using AnthroPlus software. Child feeding practices, eating behaviour, and dietary intake were assessed through interviews, with the aid of a questionnaire. Multiple binary logistic regression was used in data analysis. The prevalence of underweight, risk-of-overweight, overweight, and obese ASD children was 3.2% (3.8% boys; 0% girls), 4.8% (2.9% boys; 15.0% girls), 16.9% (17.3% boys; 15.0% girls), and 20.2% (23.1% boys; 5.0 % girls), respectively. The multiple binary logistic regression revealed that the caregivers with high perceived child weight (AOR 31.313, 95% CI=6.127-47.218), high concern towards child weight (AOR 1.774, 95% CI=1.112-2.829), and high sodium intakes (AOR 3.747, 95% CI= 1.515-9.269) were significantly associated with increased risk of overweight or obesity, explaining 37.2% of the variation in body weight status. It is important to prioritise the perspective of caregivers’ feeding practices especially the caregivers with high perceived child weight and concerned child’s weight as well as sodium level of the ASD children while planning for obesity intervention programmes.","PeriodicalId":38537,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Public Health Medicine","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136363427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to translate, cross-culturally adapt and validate questionnaires exploring the multifactorial health empowerment component among IHD patients. This process involved: 1) Adaptation of conceptualising applicable questionnaires; 2) Translation; 3) Cultural adaptation of forward and backward translations; and 4) Pre-tested validation by experts (n=5) and piloted among participants (n=30). Content validity revealed that I-CVI and S- CVI were both 0.98, indicating that the questionnaire items were understandable and relevant. An FKI of 0.87 supported experts’ agreements. Cronbach alpha values ranged from 0.696–0.977 for each construct. Further reinforced by Rasch analysis, an overall Cronbach alpha of 0.87 indicated adequate internal consistency. Data fitted the model, as evidenced by Infit values of mean square (MNSQ) near 1, and Z standard (ZSTD) values near 0. An item reliability of 0.97 indicated that the anticipated items were correctly measured, and an item separation of 5.78 suggests a high degree of separation with precise measurement. A Person separation of 2.38 revealed the capacity to distinguish the participants in the agreement of the questionnaires. Rating scales between -3.54 and 2.77 demonstrated a strong separation of scales. A raw variance explained by measures of 68.3%, unexplained variance in 1st contrast with Eigenvalue 9.98 and noise level of 13.2% demonstrated the instrument is operating as intended. The Perceived Severity to Chronic Disease, Health Consciousness, eHealth Literacy and Patient Adherence questionnaires were valid and reliable tools to be administered and explore the multifactorial component in empowering health among IHD patients.","PeriodicalId":38537,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Public Health Medicine","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136363061","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hence, it is of interest to compare the Filipinos and Korean populations in terms of alterations in body mass index based on lifestyle factors such as gender, age, smoking, drinking, physical activities, COVID-19 history, and other reported health problems during the pandemic. Using Google survey, data from Filipinos and South Koreans were matched, based on each factor using the two-sample z-tests and one-way analyses of variance for BMI and two-tailed tests of population proportion for the number of respondents was done. Results showed that before and during the pandemic, Filipinos had statistically significant higher mean BMI in most factors, which may be due to differences in lifestyle, pandemic management, and stricter lockdown implementations by the government. A greater number of Filipinos suffered severe COVID-19 symptoms which may be associated with higher BMI and vaccination conflicts. A statistically significant increase in the cases of mental disorders (p = 0.0003) and the higher mean BMI of Filipinos with mental disorders than South Koreans (p = 0.0053) were notable during the pandemic. Thus, association between mental disorders and high BMI needs further investigation. The results warrant immediate intervention measures by stakeholders to deal with health situations arising from higher BMI and mental disorders in the Philippines and the lowering of BMI at unhealthy levels in the South Korea population.","PeriodicalId":38537,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Public Health Medicine","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136363062","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of an educational intervention to improve the knowledge and safety practices in pesticide handling among farmers in Samarahan, Sarawak. A quasi-experimental study was conducted involving an interventional (n= 50) and a control group (n = 50). A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect baseline information on participants’ knowledge and practices in pesticide handling. Participants in the interventional group underwent a five-month interventional programme consisting of four modules on the importance of understanding pesticides label, short and long-term effects of pesticides, routes of entry into the body and symptoms manifested upon exposure, safety usage, storage and disposal methods and practices. The control group were not exposed to any intervention. All the participants were reassessed at one- and fifth-month post-intervention using a validated self-administered questionnaire. Data were analysed using repeated measure analysis of variance to measure the effect of intervention between the groups. No significant difference was observed in the baseline based on gender and age distribution between both groups. Participants from the interventional group recorded a significant improvement in the mean knowledge and safety practices scores in the first month and fifth months compared to the baseline values. Meanwhile, no significant improvement in both outcomes was detected in the control group throughout the three assessments. These findings revealed that locally tailored educational intervention is effective in improving the knowledge level and safety practices of farmers in pesticide handling. Hence, these findings can be used by local authorities to develop an effective intervention for pesticide users in Sarawak and other states in Malaysia in reducing the risk of pesticide exposure.","PeriodicalId":38537,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Public Health Medicine","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135135301","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
