There is insufficient information to understand factors associated with turnover intention among specialist medical practitioners in Sabah, a state in Malaysia with the least number of clinical specialists for all specialties. This study intended to determine prominent factors affecting turnover intention using a cross sectional study conducted among Ministry of Health’s specialist medical practitioners across Sabah. Respondents were chosen using convenience sampling technique to complete a self-administered questionnaire consisting of sociodemographic information, work characteristics, the 10 item Warr-Cook-Wall (WCW) job satisfaction scale, a question on private sector employment offer and turnover intention. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were used to identify significant factors affecting turnover intention. A total of 101 completed questionnaires were analysed. A total of 75 (74.3%) respondents were younger than 40 years old and 57 (56.4%) of them were male. Almost one third (31.7%) of specialist medical practitioners in Sabah were actively seeking alternative employment. Factors associated with turnover intention were low job satisfaction score (t = 3.516, 95% CI 2.64-9.49, p < 0.005) and career development opportunities (x² = 5.766, p < 0.05). Turnover intention among specialist medical practitioners in Sabah was significantly associated with low job satisfaction and dissatisfaction with career development opportunity. The model was developed based on guidance related to student personal safeguards against COVID-19. The personal safeguards were distinguished into an individual (i.e., the use of face masks, physical distancing efforts, hand hygiene, immunity-boosting attempts, and vaccines) and shared (i.e., attitude towards COVID-19 and respiratory etiquette practices) layer of defenses. The survey was then administered to 232 Indonesian university students. The results indicated that the majority (>50%) were always wearing masks, wearing adequate masks, wearing fitted masks, and wearing masks properly. On the other hand, many participants (40-75%) reported not complying with the required hand hygiene standards, including washing hands in less than 20 seconds, and frequently touching the donned masks. Regarding immunity-boosting attempts, a third of the participants reported not exercising regularly. Also, about 10% of the participants were neutral or disagreed with staying at home when having close contacts or having the COVID-19 symptoms. Furthermore, some efforts and attitudes towards most safeguards were significantly different across the gender. In conclusion, most Indonesian student participants had adequate compliance regarding many safety measures regarding COVID-19 prevention, although several aspects such as hand hygiene and immunity-boosting attempts could still be improved.","PeriodicalId":38537,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Public Health Medicine","volume":"37 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79113340","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Malaysia, research data on the prevalence of low back pain, and its associated risk factors, among occupational therapists, is currently lacking. In view of this situation this study is aimed at identifying the prevalence, associated risk factors, and effects of LBP, among occupational therapists in Malaysia. This cross-sectional study involves a total of 287 occupational therapists. The instruments used in this study include demographic information, a Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire, and an Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire. Data were collected online, and processed with the use of SPSS-21. This study revealed a high lifetime (79.4%), and one-year (71.1%) LBP prevalence among occupational therapists, in comparison to the point LBP prevalence (28.6%). The significant risk factors associated to LBP were identified as gender, exercise status, work stress level, and a poor working posture. Among those afflicted with LBP, 53.4% experienced a reduction in work activity, while 81.6% were affected by a minimal functional disability. A substantial proportion of occupational therapists in Malaysia, endure functional disability associated with LBP, which consequently has a negative effect on their leisure time and working life. As such, efforts should be directed at introducing multilevel interventions, for the prevention and control of LBP, in terms of this highly vulnerable occupational group.","PeriodicalId":38537,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Public Health Medicine","volume":"45 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89056495","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A cross-sectional study was conducted from July 2021 to February 2022, a period where phase three of MCO was declared in Malaysia. Data was collected by using online Patient Health Questionnaire-9 as the scoring system for depression and was analysed using Jeffrey’s Amazing Statistics Program (JASP) version 0.14.1.0. Statistical analyses such as descriptive analysis, chi- square and multinomial logistic regression was applied in this study. Our result showed that the prevalence of depression among foundation students during MCO was high. The students enrolled in Foundation in Art program reported to have the highest severe depression compared to the other foundation programs. Although sociodemographic factors exhibited relevant prevalence pattern among the foundation students, however there is no significant (*p<0.05) association between sociodemographic factors with prevalence of depression in this study. We further analysed the following predominant factors which could affect the learning process and root cause of depression among the students during MCO. Interestingly, students unsatisfied with online classes (*p=0.028) and have poor internet connection (*p=0.027) revealed significant association with depression level. Thus, in order to improvise the learning outcomes, we suggest to have an interactive learning and blended teaching method to overcome the depression and mental stress in students.","PeriodicalId":38537,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Public Health Medicine","volume":"121 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73469441","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To avert the severity of hazardous drinking among university students, it is significant to identify their knowledge, attitude, and consumption pattern of alcohol for better feasible intervention strategies. A cross-sectional study was conducted among university students aged 18-30 years using the convenience sampling method. The questionnaire was self-designed and validated by a panel of experts. Data were collected between August and September 2020 and analysed by SPSS version 20. A total of 374 participants completed the questionnaire. The prevalence of alcohol use was 81% and about third quarters of them had their first drinking before the legal age. The mean score for alcohol knowledge was 16.05 (SD = 4.31). More than half of them had good knowledge (54%) and a positive attitude towards alcohol use (54.3%). 77.6% of them showed irregular drinking behaviour and only a minority (22.7%) engaged in risky behaviours, among them, the most common were emotional outbursts, vomiting, and hangovers. A significant relationship was observed between alcohol use with family and peer influence effect, ethnicity, living condition and perceived parents’ socioeconomic status. There were lacunae in the government policies whereby the legislation and enforcement policy were insufficient to regulate or restrict the accessibility of alcoholic beverages for young people under the age of 21 and lacked strategies for enabling drinkers to track their alcohol intake. The relevant parties should focus on the necessary efforts to prevent underage drinking and improve alcohol use awareness.","PeriodicalId":38537,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Public Health Medicine","volume":"81 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84670884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These factors are perceived to relate to the nutritional status, eating habits of the children and, subsequently, their future well-being. This study aimed to determine the FFCMs factors (including health concerns, natural content, sensory appeal, convenience, weight control, price, mood, and familiarity) of the parents who had preschool children in Selangor, Malaysia. A cross-sectional study was conducted among seventy-six pairs of mothers and children aged 4 to 6 years in six selected preschools in the Klang Valley, Selangor. A set of self-administered questionnaires measuring demographic data, dietary records, and FFCMs of the parents were answered by the mother, and anthropometric measurements of the children were then taken. The mean FFCMs score found that \"health\" (mean 3.5 ± 0.53) was reported as the most important factor in parents' ’food choices than the \"familiarity\" factor (mean 2.78 ± 0.67). Compared to the ethnic groups, both Chinese and Indians mostly chose \"natural content”, compared to Malay parents who chose \"health\" (3.55 ± 0.50) as an important factor to consider when choosing food. In conclusion, this study showed that by determining the most important factors influencing a family’s food choices, it is likely to improve the nutritional status and well-being of children and their family members. Thus, this study proposed the utilization of FFCMs as an instrument to design and develop food- and nutrition-related interventions for further studies.","PeriodicalId":38537,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Public Health Medicine","volume":"14 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83352885","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to investigate the effect of LcS on faecal profiles and body weight gain in overweight (OW) and obese (OB) children. A total of 42 children, comprising 22 OW/OB children (mean age = 8.73 ± 1.03 years old; BMI = 24.73 ± 3.91 kg/m2; 54.5% boys) and 20 normal weight (NW) children (as a control), were randomly assigned to either receive daily 80 ml of probiotic drink at a dosage of 3.0 x 1010 colony-forming units (CFU) for 4 weeks or a control. Faecal samples were taken, and SCFAs were analysed by HPLC. Results: Twenty-two OW/OB participants completed the study. At the end of the fourth week of LcS supplementations, the propionate and the total SCFAs concentrations increased significantly over time with evident intervention effect (p<0.05). In the treatment group, the faecal propionate concentration (Mean= 153.57 µmol/g , SD= 142.17) increased by 161 % and total SCFAs concentration (Mean= 201.44 µmol/g , SD= 162.90) increased by 79 % from the baseline. The mean percentage of body weight changed significantly within the treatment and control groups: 6.4% in the control group and 7.4% in the treatment group (p 0.05). The control was not achieved significantly, as the stigma is one of the significant barriers to controlling tuberculosis. It hampers the TB treatment’s determined targeted completion. However, despite countless measures to improve therapy completion, non-adherence to therapy remains a global issue. This systematic review is aimed at evaluating tuberculosis-related measures to increase adherence to treatment among patients with tuberculosis in developing countries. A systematic search of electronic databases (PubMed, Google Scholar, Pro-Quest science Direct, Ovid, Spring, Global Health, and Cochrane) covering articles published between 2003 and 2019 was carried out using truncated search words such as “tuberculosis-related stigma,” TB Stigma,” “intervention,” “treatment adherence,” “treatment compliance\" and \"developing countries.\" We included information from developing countries addressing the stigma between TB patients and their anti-stigma intervention. Eight hundred sixty-seven articles have been retrieved, 346 have been excluded due to duplication, and 397 other non-relevant articles have been excluded at the title screening stage. Subsequently, after full-text articles were assessed for failing to meet inclusion criteria, 118 articles were excluded, and only six studies remained. The six articles have improved TB treatment outcomes with stigma intervention, including health education and counseling, TB club self-support, and psychological support interventions. Setting, resources and local TB epidemiology may vary in the optimal implementation of stigma interventions.","PeriodicalId":38537,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Public Health Medicine","volume":"63 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86148087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
