As such, this is a considerably unsettling phase of negotiation for men as they need to (re)define their identity and their sense of masculinity particularly when aging. The masculinity embodied by the cowboy prototype certainly fits this model that sees masculinities as a “temporal script” (67). In the classic 1979 movie The Electric Horseman, directed by Sydney Pollack, the factor of age runs as a subtext that not only informs masculine identity but also takes on a broader significance to express an important cultural transformation. Instead of simply focusing on the effects of the passing of time for an individual man, the film explores the changes in US society through one of its most celebrated cultural icons, the cowboy. To analyze Sonny Steele’s distinctiveness within hegemonic ageless narratives in The Electric Horseman, this article will set him alongside two archetypal figures of the genre of the western: the cowboy and the horse, which serves as a key vehicle of the character’s own exalted masculinity. This critical approach shows how the prevailing model of youthful or ageless masculinity in cowboy stories can thus be challenged.","PeriodicalId":38126,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Estudios Norteamericanos","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66094067","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By doing so, it will correlate (ab)use and domination of entertainment to the description of the particular corporeality present in the novel, which is portrayed as being malleable, disconnected, machine-like and monstrous. Although published in the late 90s, the novel anticipated most accurately how entertainment would be consumed in contemporary times and its possible effects on individuals. Thereby, this essay analyzes how the body is shaped in Infinite Jest through the use of a current neuropsychological perspective and contemporary theories of the self as an attempt to reflect upon Wallace’s description of the body and its relation to the world of entertainment. RESUMEN: El objetivo de este trabajo es explorar la representacion del cuerpo y su significado en la novela de David Foster Wallace, Infinite Jest (1996). Para ello, se relacionara el (ab)uso y dominacion del entretenimiento con la descripcion de la propia corporalidad presente en la novela, en la que se representa ductil, inconexa, mecanica y monstruosa. Aun siendo publicado a finales de los 90, la novela anticipa con gran exactitud como el entretenimiento iba a ser consumido en tiempos contemporaneos, asi como sus posibles efectos en el individuo. Por este motivo, el presente ensayo analiza como el cuerpo es moldeado en Infinite Jest a traves del uso de perspectivas neuropsicologicas y de teorias actuales sobre la identidad, en un intento de reflexionar sobre los usos que Wallace hace de la descripcion del cuerpo y su relacion con el mundo del entretenimiento.","PeriodicalId":38126,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Estudios Norteamericanos","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66093095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By using the national continuum of jeremiad rhetoric and her attachment to the values of the Christian creed, the novel partakes and yet takes a different direction from slave narratives by cagily forerunning Du Bois’s praised theory of the double consciousness. In so doing, it positions its protagonist as the first black female that absorbs and displays an identity that eventually becomes successful for it installs herself within the realm of home premised on the longed Puritan myth of the (African) American City upon a Hill which allows her to be a proper (African) American citizen. RESUMEN: The Bondwoman’s Narrative (1857) es una novela en la que la esclava negra Hannah Crafts se propone remodelar su sociedad y redefinirse a traves de una ferrea adhesion cristiana y un absoluto respeto a los valores que de ella se coligen basandose en la Biblia y remodelando el imaginario cristiano para vehicular su mensaje y propugnar su subjetividad y su americanidad. Al utilizar el resorte nacional de la jeremiada y su adhesion a los valores del credo cristiano, la novela se basa en, y a la vez diverge de, las narraciones de esclavos adelantandose subrepticiamente a la aclamada teoria de la doble conciencia de Du Bois. De este modo, situa a la protagonista como la primera esclava negra que absorbe y presenta una identidad que, al final, deviene en triunfo puesto que la instala en la esfera del hogar dentro de su anhelada Ciudad sobre la Colina (afro)americana y le permite ser una ciudadana americana per se.","PeriodicalId":38126,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Estudios Norteamericanos","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66093342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is the contention of the article that the choice of this particular locale affords an excellent opportunity for a critical engagement with the national imaginary, the powerful myths shaping the American imagination. Travels in the Scriptorium reinvents the Southwest as the bloody arena on which the American imperialist mission is reenacted. In the novel, the Alien Territories, representing the American Southwest in the historical expansion of the United States, figure as a site of vicious struggle and ruthless conquest. By contrast, The Book of Illusions, presents the Southwest, specifically New Mexico, as the last mainstay of the American Dream. The creation of the Blue Stone Ranch in the “wilderness” of New Mexico and its transformation encapsulate the history of the American nation in its essential stages. But more importantly, the Southwest is envisioned as a region invested with a restorative, almost sacred quality. The Book of Illusion is the story of trauma. And the recovery from trauma is a process that either originates or takes place in New Mexico. RESUMEN: Este articulo se centra en dos novelas de Paul Auster, The Book of Illusions (2002) y Travels in the Scriptorium (2006) en las cuales el Sudoeste emerge como un territorio mitico que proporciona un espacio para la exploracion y revision de las grandes narrativas americanas. El proposito es senalar la eleccion de esta localizacion en particular como una oportunidad excelente para desarrollar un compromiso critico con el imaginario nacional, conformado por los solidos mitos y representaciones que configuran la imaginacion americana. Travels in the Scriptorium redefine el Sudoeste como el terreno sangriento en el que se recrea la mision colonialista americana. En la novela, los Territorios Foraneos, que representan el sudoeste americano dentro de la expansion historica de los Estados Unidos figuran como un lugar de lucha y conquista violentas. Por el contrario, The Book of Illusions presenta el Sudoeste, Nuevo Mexico especificamente, como el ultimo pilar del sueno americano. La creacion del rancho Blue Stone en las tierras salvajes de Nuevo Mexico y su transformacion comprenden la historia de la nacion americana en sus etapas constitutivas. De forma significativa, el Sudoeste se concibe como una region con rasgos revitalizadores, casi sagrados. Asi, The Book of Illusions es la historia del trauma cuyo proceso de recuperacion se origina y tiene lugar en Nuevo Mexico.","PeriodicalId":38126,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Estudios Norteamericanos","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66094387","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the associations between the passive and sensitive feminine ideal, as well as women’s supposedly innate moral and spiritual superiority, the ideology embraced by the spiritualist community granted its female followers a central role in the emerging movement while remaining compliant with the values of the period. As an example, spiritualist authors Lizzie Doten and Achsa Sprague made use of trance poetry to challenge the stereotypes which were meant to prevent women from participating in public life. By tracing the connections between mediumship and the act of writing it is possible to disclose the diverse strategies that such poets borrowed from spiritualist discourse in order to adapt their work to a readership that would rather believe in ghosts than in self-sufficient female authorship.  RESUMEN: Este articulo explora las paradojas planteadas por la poesia espiritista americana en relacion con la voz femenina en la cultura decimononica. Debido a las asociaciones entre el ideal de femineidad pasivo y sensible, ademas de la superioridad moral y espiritual supuestamente innata de las mujeres, la ideologia adoptada por la comunidad espiritista otorgaba a sus seguidoras un papel central en el movimiento emergente mientras, al mismo tiempo, permanecia de acuerdo con los valores de la epoca. Por ejemplo, las autoras espiritistas Lizzie Doten y Achsa Sprague utilizaron la poesia escrita en trance para poner en cuestion los estereotipos que impedian a las mujeres participar en la vida publica. The book recounts Smith’s relationship with avant-garde photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, as well as her involvement in New York City’s burgeoning bohemian downtown scene. Five years later, she published a second memoir, M Train, a much more experimental narrative that goes back and forth in time and mixes dream and reality in an attempt to convey her nostalgic recollection of the past. This paper examines Patti Smith’s memoirs as a space where different genres of life writing converge, thus enabling the development of a multilayered, richly constructed narrative self whose identity is intimately connected with loss, self-discovery and the making of art. The analysis of her autobiographical prose works allows us to regard life writing as a way for women to devise a public image of their own. El libro relata la relacion de Smith con el fotografo vanguardista Robert Mapplethorpe, asi como su involucramiento en la incipiente escena bohemia de la ciudad de Nueva York. Cinco anos despues, publico un segundo libro de memorias, M Train, con una narrativa mucho mas experimental que combina presente y pasado y mezcla suenos y realidad con la intencion de verbalizar su nostalgico recuerdo del pasado. Este articulo estudia las memorias de Patti Smith como un espacio en el que convergen diferentes generos autobiograficos, permitiendo asi la construccion de un personaje narrativo con multiples dimensiones cuya identidad esta intimamente ligada a la perdida, al descubrimiento de uno mismo y al arte. Butler and Colson Whitehead, Parable of the Sower and Zone One respectively, as instances of “narrative vulnerability” that reformulate dystopian conventions to denounce precariousness and social chaos in twenty-first century America. It is argued that these novels re-adapt dystopia (understood in terms of genre and space: dys-topos) to denounce the futurelessness and fragility of corporate (bio)political systems, which can easily turn into posthuman regimes that cannibalize and impinge on the rights of those deemed Other. My aim with this paper is to trace the authors’ depictions of time and space as reconsidered genre components that problematize narrative resolution, adhering to narrative closure and spatial vulnerability in an attempt to critically portray the victimhood and hopelessness of those for whom nation and home will always be inaccessible, merely dystopian land. Tratare de ofrecer una vision teorica de la adaptacion que estas novelas hacen del genero (y el espacio) post-apocaliptico para denunciar la ausencia de un futuro esperanzador que conllevan los sistemas (bio)politicos que gobiernan nuestra sociedad. Son precisamente estos sistemas los que pueden transformarse en regimenes post-humanos que canibalizan y vulneran los derechos que aquellas personas consideradas como Otras. El proposito de este articulo es analizar la representacion del tiempo y el espacio en las novelas como componentes clave en la re-adaptacion de su genero postapocaliptico, logrando asi evitar la resolucion del conflicto para abogar por un cierre narrativo. A traves de la vulnerabilidad de los espacios narrativos, estas novelas motivan al lector a analizar tanto la sociedad en la que vive, como las emociones conflictivas que en ella residen (tanto propias como ajenas). To this end, he fills the novel with grotesquely violent and humorous scenes which give the work a seemingly perverse appearance. The normalized violence and the grotesque humor throughout the novel, however, disrupt socially normalized concepts and thwart the reader’s notion of normality which is a reminiscent of “realism” as a traditional mode of narrativization. Violence theories of scholars like Schinkel, Arendt, and Benjamin together with humor theories of Morreall, Cohen, and Carroll are drawn upon in order to clarify the interconnected mechanism of humor, grotesquery, and violence in producing tribulations in the narrative line of Bearheart. This aesthetic strategy, which is aligned with a dexterous manipulation of focalization, is used throughout the novel to break the unquestioned authority of masternarratives and also to help the already marginalized Native Americans’ voices produce their own narratives of identity.  RESUMEN: Gerald Vizenor busca desafiar las definiciones asentadas sobre la identidad de los Nativos Americanos en una de sus primeras novelas,  Bearheart. Con este fin, su novela esta llena de escenas grotescamente violentas y humoristicas que le dan a la obra una apariencia perversa. Tanto esta violencia normalizada como este humor grotesco a lo largo de la novela, sin embargo, alteran los conceptos normalizados e impiden la nocion de normalidad del lector, reminiscencia del realismo como modo tradicional de narracion. Se recurre a los estudios sobre la violencia como los de  Schinkel, Arendt, y Benjamin y a los teoricos del humor Morreall, Cohen y Carroll para clarificar el mecanismo de las interconexiones del humor, de lo grotesco y de la violencia que producen tribulaciones en la linea de la narrativa de Bearheart. La estrategia estetica, junto con una habil manipulacion de la focalizacion, se usa a lo largo de la novela para romper la autoridad incuestionable de las metanarrativas y asi ayudar a los Nativos Americanos, cuyas voces han sido marginalizadas, a que produzcan sus propias narrativas con respecto a su identidad.","PeriodicalId":38126,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Estudios Norteamericanos","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66094011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
