The realization of their national goals was long sought after within the framework of the Habsburg Monarchy, but it was a while before a turnaround happened in favor of the Yugoslavs. Even the May Declaration, which was read by the chairman of the Yugoslav Club Anton Korošec in the National Assembly on May 30, 1917, aimed at the Yugoslav state under the rule of the Habsburg dynasty. The heir apparent Franz Ferdinand planed for constitutional changes in favor of Southern Slavs, and after he was assassinated the new Emperor Charles I. also sought changes in these directions. These were opposed energetically by the Hungarians and German nationalists. The new emperor did not have strong support in Vienna, and he lost all of it after the Sixtus affair. The consequence of this was that he lacked the necessary support for constitutional changes or solving of the Yugoslav question.","PeriodicalId":38093,"journal":{"name":"Studia Historica Slovenica","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42223370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As regards the latter, historians have paid little attention to the material kept by the British archives. The end of the war, for various reasons, did not necessarily mean the end of captivity. The problem first appeared in mass form and conditioned the lives of not only the captives themselves but also their families – especially women and children who were eagerly awaiting the return of their relatives. The delayed repatriation had an impact on their economic and social situation and their daily lives in general. The article therefore addresses the question of the fate of the families of prisoners of war, who have been overlooked by historians, who may have waited for news of relatives and their return for many years after the armistice was concluded in 1918. The issue is addressed in the case of families of Slovenian and Croatian prisoners of war – the ex-Austro-Hungarian soldiers returning from captivity in Russia and Italy, based on requests from relatives submitted to the General Civilian Commissariat of Trieste.","PeriodicalId":38093,"journal":{"name":"Studia Historica Slovenica","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43536787","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was a real state union and next to the Kingdom of Serbia the second predecessor state of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, which was established o December 1, 1918. With the emergence of the State of SHS, the experience of their confederate statehood began for the Slovenians. Its factor was the first Slovenian national government, the National Government of SHS in Ljubljana (the National Government), which had all the authority in Slovenian lands and independently decided on the territory's political, social, cultural, economic, and military development. This position of Slovenian lands in the State of SHS was also recognized by the National Council of SHS in Zagreb, the supreme authority in the State of SHS, which transferred the exercise of its supreme authority for the Slovenian territory to the National Government in Ljubljana. Confederate national statehood is a key acquisition that defines the importance of the State of SHS in recent Slovenian historical development. With its creation, the first Slovenian state-building experience came to life.","PeriodicalId":38093,"journal":{"name":"Studia Historica Slovenica","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42285403","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The author analyses the causes for the war, which is to this day explained in various ways. He attempts to answer the how and why did an initially local war turn into a conflict of global proportions that cost the lives of 40 million people, caused enormous material damage and caused revenge on a grand scale. The so-called \"Versailles order in Europe\" caused the rise of revanchism, a new wave of militarism and totalitarian ideologies (fascism, clerical fascism, Nazism, communism). With the end of the war began a contradictory world. It was marked by the duality of wealth and poverty and a new dumbing down which led to catastrophe. At the same time, a radical break with pre-war tradition began and was marked by incredible achievements of the human mind in all areas, from science and technology to art.","PeriodicalId":38093,"journal":{"name":"Studia Historica Slovenica","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42838324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The National Council has gradually developed into an authority in Slovenian lands. Legitimate Austrian authority began to die out as a sovereign power, and the revolutionary Slovenian authority, exercised by the National Council and its subordinate bodies, was more and more effective every day. In Slovenian lands, state relations with Austria were broken at a major national event on October 29, 1918 at the Congress Square in Ljubljana. The event was attended by more than 30,000 people of all ages and backgrounds, some 200 Slovenian officers and soldiers, and all the leading Slovenian political representatives who were in Ljubljana at that time. In their speeches, they welcomed the separation of Slovenians from Austria and the emergence of an independent state of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs, who by then lived in the Habsburg Monarchy (SHS State), and soldiers broke the oath given to the Habsburg Ruler and declared loyalty to the SHS State. The military played a prominent role in establishing a new, Slovenian rule, and decisively contributed to the formation of the first Slovenian national government. On October 31, 1918, the National Council of SHS in Ljubljana was declared the supreme authority in the State of SHS by the National Council of SHS in Zagreb.","PeriodicalId":38093,"journal":{"name":"Studia Historica Slovenica","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49555903","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These were noticeable in all areas of personal and community life, and were particularly challenging for church communities, which prepared a series of initiatives to alleviate social distress and to regulate the issues raised by the war. Attention was drawn to various groups of the population: war orphans, widows, disabled soldiers, refugees from the Gorica (Gorizia) region, and the missing. Additional care had to be given to the military graves and the military sections of the cemeteries. The various forms of charitable action needed to be coordinated. The alliance Karitativna zveza became an umbrella organization for said charity work. There were various rallies, the preparation of programs and the raising of funds for the charity work. When the Spanish disease broke out at the end of the war, it was in the ecclesiastical context to find original explanations of this ordeal. The paper also outlines initiatives taken by individual bishops to regulate the situation. They placed greater emphasis on the religious dimension of the event. At the same time, they warned people against taking advantage of affected friends and relatives, and against a disorderly life.","PeriodicalId":38093,"journal":{"name":"Studia Historica Slovenica","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42197788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present contribution evaluates his scientific, professional and popular texts on (Slovenian) architecture. In those, Stele appears as an expert on historical and contemporary architecture. He is the author of several seminal studies on historical (especially medieval) architectural heritage in the territory of Slovenia, as well as on the architect Jože Plečnik, whose promotor and proponent he was. Architecture also makes up a substantial part of Stele's overviews of fine arts, at the same time his articles, published in daily newspapers and periodicals, played a crucial role in the process of informing the general public on the importance of selected architectural monuments and their preservation.","PeriodicalId":38093,"journal":{"name":"Studia Historica Slovenica","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43409988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Until the end of August 1945, those who cooperated in any way with the occupiers during the war were put to trial. It imposed the following penalties and/or sentences: loss of national honour, light or heavy forced labour, and total or partial confiscation of property for the benefit of the State. The five-member chambers operated in Ljubljana, Kranj, Novo mesto, Celje, Maribor, Ptuj, and Murska Sobota. The chairs and secretaries of the chambers were jurists, and the members of the chambers were persons without legal qualifications. There were two chambers in Ptuj; the first hearing against the eight defendants was on July 9, 1945. The proceedings before the court were prompt. In total, 382 persons appeared before the two chambers in Ptuj, of which 308 were sentenced and 74 acquitted. Following the abolition of the Court and the granting of a pardon, the convicts were fully spared from light or heavy forced labour. The legal consequences for those who were stripped of their national honour were limited to the loss of political and civil rights, including voting rights. The confiscation penalty remained in force.","PeriodicalId":38093,"journal":{"name":"Studia Historica Slovenica","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44302242","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
