More rapid and effective man-computer communication has become perhaps the most pressing need of the computer systems industry. Much knowledge gained through psychological and human factors research is directly or indirectly applicable. Yet this information often fails to find its way to those who need it most—designers and implementors. It is the purpose of this session to address the nature of the man-computer interaction process, and to suggest specific ways in which man and computer can be made to function together more smoothly and cooperatively.","PeriodicalId":379505,"journal":{"name":"ACM '76","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1976-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115265342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Leon Osterweil will discuss the role of allegations in static testing, Bob Hoffman will describe an interactive program testing system, and Lori Clarke will discuss symbolic execution techniques. Hanan Samet will describe an approach to validating the translations performed by a compiler. Concurrently, special-purpose retrieval hardware is being designed, and one prototype system is under construction. Pointers may point to storage that no longer is allocated, or storage may be allocated as one data type and accessed as another. This report describes the implementation of pointers in the PLUM PL/1 compiler such that all error conditions are detected. In addition, preliminary tests with PLUM seem to indicate that the total checking of pointers is not as expensive an operation as it first appears.","PeriodicalId":379505,"journal":{"name":"ACM '76","volume":"3 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1976-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131890358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The generation of load is discussed in terms of the load as seen at the service facilities and is shown to originate at any instant from two effectively independent sources - external to the system and from a second source of real load, the queue. Further discussion is also presented on the various subcomponents of these two load sources, and their respective contributions towards facility utilization and saturation. The significance of the framework described is shown to be its reflection of the dependence of the system operating and behaviour patterns on the input load structure, and in general the provision of a basis for a more direct comparability between the model structure and that of the real system.","PeriodicalId":379505,"journal":{"name":"ACM '76","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1976-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130766202","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Exchanges between processes are carried by three word elements, called LINKs, which are used to transfer control information and to assign data to processes. The managements of interactions by the single queue structure is used to coordinate parallel, time-independent operation of the attached processes, with the interface provided by the LINKs giving a simple yet flexible interface between activities. The implementation is a special purpose operating system designed for use in a PDP-11 computer dedicated to handling transfers of control and data between a number of communicating processes, which are connected to the PDP-11 by communications lines, direct memory access interfaces and shared memory.","PeriodicalId":379505,"journal":{"name":"ACM '76","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1976-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130634249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Performance evaluation results based on the cost functions of the model and system are presented. These performance measures are compared with the results of previous simulation models for indexed sequential, multi-list, and inverted file structures. The analytic approach makes the costs of evaluation very low. Consequently, many evaluations may be performed interactively with the file designer when searching for the most suitable structure for a given application.","PeriodicalId":379505,"journal":{"name":"ACM '76","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1976-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126726034","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
