Although numerous studies have examined the acculturation and identity experiences of binational migrants having lived in two countries, little known research has specifically looked at migrants to three or more countries. Collectively termed multicountry immersers, or MCIs, this study seeks to examine the unique experiences of such individuals who have lived and adapted culturally, linguistically, and professionally to three or more countries. Semistructured interviews were conducted on a diverse sample of 10 emerging adult, geographically dispersed MCIs with extensive immersive and acculturative experiences in three or more countries. Individual and group themes emerged via qualitative analysis, including adaptation experiences, experiences of connection and disconnection, and individual identity dimensions. A theoretical model of identity transformation as a result of multiple country immersions is introduced.","PeriodicalId":37636,"journal":{"name":"International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation","volume":"65 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88103001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to validate the Type III continuous traumatic stress model assumptions and use it to assess the effect of intersected traumas of civil war and COVID-19 stressors on internally displaced Syrian people. We recruited 891 Syrians from camps (46.5% females, aged 18–90 years [ M = 30.81, SD = 12.04]). We measured COVID-19 stressors, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex PTSD (CPTSD), depression, anxiety, and executive functions to assess the variables related to peri-post Type III mental health syndrome. We measured Type I, II, and III traumas and Type III trauma subtypes. To explore the significance of differences between correlation sizes and the comparative severity of each trauma type, we calculated Fisher z scores. We performed path analysis with trauma Types III and II as correlated independent variables and COVID-19 stressors' impact on peri-post Type III trauma mental health syndrome to check their proliferation and impact. Of the sample, COVID-19 had infected 45.9%, 33.1% fit the diagnostic criteria for CPTSD, and 13.9% fit the diagnostic criteria for PTSD. All trauma types were associated with mental health, cognitive deficits, and COVID-19 severity, with a significantly higher association with trauma Type III. Type III-a subtype (intersected discrimination) had the highest associations with each variable. Type III was bidirectionally correlated with Type II and proliferated to Type I traumas (single past events) and COVID-19 stressors, with Type III having a larger effect size on peri-post Type III trauma mental health syndrome. The clinical and conceptual implications of the findings are discussed.","PeriodicalId":37636,"journal":{"name":"International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation","volume":"19 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80651870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research examined the enablers, barriers, and outcomes of community-based drug rehabilitation programs in Philippine local governments. A multicase study research design was used in collecting and analyzing narratives from 38 leaders, program implementers, and participants in five local government units that implemented community-based drug rehabilitation. Using the World Health Organization’s Health Systems framework, the study elicited barriers and enablers in terms of leadership, financing and access to resources, information system, workforce, and service delivery. Beyond these, a unique theme that emerged was the salience of context and culture, specifically, the influence of poverty, community, and stigma. Despite these challenges, clients, providers, and leaders report positive outcomes including improved health and well-being, social/ financial protection for the clients, and access to services. The implications of findings on policy and practice are discussed.","PeriodicalId":37636,"journal":{"name":"International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation","volume":"14 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82859354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More people than ever in history are being displaced and becoming refugees due to political conflict, climate change, and persecution, among others. Meeting the mental health care needs of refugees has become a global priority. This population’s needs are unique due to the multiple traumatic experiences of refugees, their difficulties in navigating various systemic barriers, and the minimal specialized cultural training in refugee care. In order to improve the health of refugees, it is important to examine how care is delivered and the provider and systemic factors that perpetuate inequities and cultural misunderstandings in providing care. Most of the refugee literature focuses on refugee factors that limit access to care but falls short on discussing providers’ lack of training in refugee care. In the following paper, we present refugee mental health training considerations for providers. These considerations are based on the lessons learned from direct clinical work in a refugee clinic located in a major public academic hospital in the New England area (United States of America). The authors discuss the particular context of caring for refugee populations, the skills needed to work with this population, and considerations for navigating provider and systemic barriers that arise in refugee care. We believe that training mental health providers can have significant implications for refugee mental health care utilization, patient improved treatment outcomes, and on refugees’ increased sense of self-determination.","PeriodicalId":37636,"journal":{"name":"International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation","volume":"61 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88330349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A rise in mental health concerns in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic has been observed. Examining patterns in how people experienced health, economic, and social concerns in the context of the pandemic and documenting relationships between these groups with mental health outcomes will fill a gap in the literature. Describing these associations is also in line with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Developmental Goals of promoting health and reducing inequalities. In the current study, we conducted a latent class analysis with items assessing health, economic, and social concerns in a sample of 1,394 people. Associations between groups with depressive and anxiety symptoms were also examined. A six-class model showed good fit, and groups were named: high overall concern (32.98%), health concerns without health care (14.78%), health and economic concerns (17.46%), economic concerns (4.57%), health concerns with health care (19.77%), and low overall concern (10.43%). Group membership was associated with mental health, with four groups reporting anxiety symptoms above a clinical cutoff. The intersection of concerns observed in these groups may serve as a barrier to mental health treatment during or following the pandemic. Consistent with the UN Sustainable Developmental Goals, ensuring equitable access to mental health care in the United States following the pandemic must include addressing the unique intersections of social determinants of health that people face.","PeriodicalId":37636,"journal":{"name":"International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation","volume":"9 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81131707","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous research has demonstrated the deleterious effects of discrimination on health and well-being, as well as how these incidents maintain and/or increase inequalities and disparities for marginalized groups. The COVID-19 pandemic and media scapegoating of Asian Americans have been linked to increases in hate crimes and other discriminatory incidents. As such, it is important to uncover the lived experiences of Asian Americans, in the context of a global crisis, to inform recommendations related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 and 10 prioritizing health and equality ( United Nations, 2015 ). The current study advances existing research by investigating the qualitative impact of postpandemic discrimination experienced by Asian American young adults from immigrant households. Analysis revealed several main themes expressed by participants such as a distinct difference in the lived experience of hostility, xenophobia, racism, and discrimination pre-COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 and the mental and physical health effects of discrimination-related stress, anxiety, and hypervigilance. Analysis also highlighted recommendations from participants for community support and resources. These findings align with emerging evidence demonstrating an increase in quantity and severity of discriminatory experiences among Asian Americans since the pandemic, as well as document the impact of these experiences on a sample of Asian Americans living through this unprecedented international event. Findings may inform interventions, programs, and policies to better serve Asian Americans, as well as directly and indirectly contribute to UN SDG 3 and SDG 10.","PeriodicalId":37636,"journal":{"name":"International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation","volume":"80 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89730753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The heightened levels of stress that accompanied the crisis were also expected to affect parenting in many families. Since it is known that high levels of stress in the parenting domain can lead to a condition that has severe consequences for health and well-being, we examined whether the prevalence of parental burnout in 26 countries (9,923 parents; 75% mothers; mean age 40) increased during COVID-19 compared to few years before the pandemic. In most (but not all) countries, analyses showed a significant increase in the prevalence of parental burnout during the pandemic. The results further revealed that next to governmental measures (e.g., number of days locked down, homeschooling) and factors at the individual and family level (e.g., gender, number of children), parents in less (vs. more) indulgent countries suffered more from parental burnout. The findings suggest that stricter norms regarding their parenting roles and duties in general and during the pandemic in particular might have increased their levels of parental burnout.","PeriodicalId":37636,"journal":{"name":"International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation","volume":"23 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77113672","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When the COVID-19 pandemic was declared an international crisis by the World Health Organization in March 2020, a group of activists, academics, performers, influencers, and innovators in diverse fields of the environment and mental health, representing government, civil society, academia, and the arts, came together to plan a way to mitigate the impact of the crisis on people and the planet. The resulting 1-day conference, held virtually on May 17, 2020, included didactic and experiential modules bridging mental health, education, and environmental initiatives to help people thrive during the crisis, as well as to provide sustainable adaptation and mitigation models for communities and the broader global population. The event sparked the development and expansion of an educational platform with hybrid online and on-location offerings which are ongoing and growing in outreach. The initiative addresses several Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, namely 2 end hunger, 3 health and well-being, 4 education for all, 11 sustainable cities and communities, 12 responsible consumption and production, 13 climate action, 14 life below water, 15 life on land, and 17 multistakeholders partnerships. This article documents the various components of this applied project entitled, the “COVID-19 What’s Next?” conference. Specifically, the article discusses the planning and creation of the conference, the multistakeholder partners, production and marketing efforts, implementation and outcomes, and subsequent steps to make the conference initiative sustainable.","PeriodicalId":37636,"journal":{"name":"International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation","volume":"26 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72631253","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cultures across the globe have evolved time-tested rituals to honor those who die and offer solace and support to survivors with the goal of helping them to accept the reality of the death, cope with the feelings of loss, adjust to life without the deceased, and find ways to maintain a connection to the memory of the deceased. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted these rituals and brought significant changes to the way we mourn. Specifically, public health responses to COVID-19 such as social distancing or isolation, delays or cancellations of traditional religious and cultural rituals, and shifts from in-person to online ceremonies have disrupted rituals and thus made it more difficult to access support and complete the psychological tasks typically associated with bereavement. This paper conceptualizes the common bereavement tasks including emotion-focused coping, maintaining a connection to the deceased, disengagement and reframing death and loss, and problem-focused coping. It provides examples of how the COVID-19 pandemic has altered mourning rituals across several cultures and religions and contributed to prolonged grief disorder as defined by the ICD-11 that includes depressive symptoms and post-traumatic stress. Early evidence suggested that the suddenness of loss, the social isolation, and the lack of social support often associated with COVID-19-related death are salient risk factors for complicated grief. As a consequence, psychological assessments, grief counseling, and mental health support are needed by families of patients who died from COVID-19. These services must be essential components of any comprehensive public health response to the pandemic.","PeriodicalId":37636,"journal":{"name":"International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation","volume":"36 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80518072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The celebration marked the founding of the UN Charter and reminded the world that this intergovernmental organization, created in the aftermath of World War II, was envisioned as an institution to safeguard humanity, and extend the protection and promotion of human rights, peace and security, the rule of law, and development. The anniversary also came against the backdrop of a world teetering on the brink of disaster – the COVID-19 pandemic. The UN Secretary-General described the COVID-19 pandemic as a global crisis that threatened to reverse decades of progress made in eradicating poverty, thereby exacerbating inequality and the progress made toward the Sustainable Development Goals. What began as a public health crisis quickly morphed into an economic, health, and human rights disaster. For many individuals and communities already lacking access to resources, the pandemic disproportionally impacted their right to live, their right to health and access to healthcare, and challenged their freedom to move around safely. As we continue to confront the challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, we are reminded of the role psychology can play in helping us understand how our attitudes and behaviors shape our responses and support the work of rebuilding a more equitable society shaped through the lens of human rights. This paper aimed to illustrate the contributions of psychological science during the current pandemic and envision the field's future impacts to promote human rights and the UN's 2030 global agenda on sustainable development.","PeriodicalId":37636,"journal":{"name":"International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation","volume":"15 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85236849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
