This study reviews yield management in its various perceptions and analyses the drawbacks of the yield statistic currently used in the industry. The paper further develops two quadratic models for yield management: one for optimising room revenue and the other for optimising room profit. Based on the two models, new yield statistics of revenue maximisation and profit maximisation are proposed. It uses an established empirical model to explain the relationship between job satisfaction, organisational commitment and the intention to stay. The findings are in line with previous research, but display an unusual characteristic in that pay satisfaction is isolated from job satisfaction and commitment. The second proposition concerns the foci of commitment. The study tests the notion that commitment to the industry is an alternative to organisational commitment. However, the areas are in different stages of the destination life cycle. As predicted by Doxey's theory of the Irridex, the attitudes of residents towards tourism in the area which is at the late involvement stage are very supportive, whereas those living in the area which is a mature tourism destination are significantly less so. Other possible determinants of residents' attitudes such as socio-demographic variables, occupation and length of residence were not found to be determining variables.
