In particular, it investigates the systematic and unsystematic risks of investing in casino stocks and the determinants of their systematic risk, or beta. Using the financial data of 35 USA casino firms from 1992 through 1994, the study found that 92% of their total risk was contributed by firm-specific unsystematic risk. The rest was due to their market-related systematic risk. The systematic risk was found to be negatively correlated with assets turnover ratio. The findings suggest that making existing gaming capacity more productive, rather than expanding, may reduce a casino firm's systematic risk and enhance the firm value. The present study aimed to examine the phenomenon in the most labour intensive of the service industries — the hospitality sector. It found that 45% of employees have suffered at the hands of ‘aggressors', a situation which is compounded by the working culture of an industry that demands long hours with high social contact to a unique set of variables, which contrive to create potentially dangerous working environments for staff. Employers must recognise the phenomenon and the potential economic and social penalties for negligence. This article seeks to enhance the understanding of peripherality in tourism research by discussing the conditions upon which the concept is applied. For this purpose, an analytical framework is constructed, suggesting two predominant research perspectives: the concrete-practical perspective that is based upon objective characteristics of destinations, and the critical-reflexive perspective which views peripherality in terms of tourists' perceptions. Although spheres of convergence between the two exist, the tourism literature shows that their interdependence is not adequately acknowledged. As a consequence research into both demand for and supply of peripherality is subjected to assumptions of unchangeability as the atmosphere-creating feature. It is argued that unchangeability does not constitute the quintessence of peripherality. Therefore, developing peripheral regions and retaining peripherality-seeking tourist segments are not mutually exclusive strategies. It explores the range, nature and characteristics of current and emerging technologies that may play a major role in the distribution of the small hotel product, and their impact and implications. The strategic alliance form of organisation, in terms of membership of a marketing consortium, as one strategy of effectively addressing the technologies and market challenges is investigated. Finally, the findings are tested relative to electronic distribution systems and strategic alliances within a major hotel marketing consortium. It shows that despite the number of young people taking vacations they have generally been neglected by researchers. The separate and heterogeneous nature of this market segment is described. Its current size, economic significance, and potential for the future is highlighted. The lack of a standardised definition of what constitutes a young tourist and the implications of this for research are also discussed. Finally, it is suggested that a wide variety of research on the young tourist is still required.
