The expectation that tourism development would both be among the triggers for, and one of the beneficiaries of, changes in governance structures is shown to be misplaced. The paper concludes with a discussion, in the light of its findings, of what might be the most appropriate agencies for promoting tourism development. Findings from both studies concurred. Education, training and the development of a yield-oriented culture within an organisation are central to the implementation of a yield management system. Hospitality practitioners must then foster this culture by developing and implementing yield-oriented strategic and tactical processes within an organisation. The YSP is a `handson style' of capacity management that suitsthe organisational style and culture of thesmaller and medium sized hotels. The YSP isdescribed as a process rather than a ®xedmethod, a frame of reference that is describedas logical incrementalism. The YSP does notreplace the practises of hotel management, but strengthens existing systems andprocedures. The YSP process is broader thanprescribed methods but is ¯exible as adecision-making support tool for modernhotel management. The YSP provides asequential and comprehensive framework toensure that yield management adds value tomanaging capacity. This, however, presents achallenge to software manufactures whotraditionally have used rate structures andpotential incremental revenue as a basis fordecision-making within yield management.

Specifically within the UK hotel sector, the extensive application of YM can be found in organisations that benefit from economies of scale and resources, namely the corporate sector. It can be expected that as the interest in and application of YM continues to increase some of the traditional components of the role of the hotel general manager may change. Indeed, the shift in focus from traditional capacity management techniques to those of revenue optimisation introduces some new managerial approaches, which may be enhanced with the traditional ‘hospitality’ nature of the industry. \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000This paper reports the findings of a study that focused on the accommodation management techniques of the general managers in 300 UK corporate hotels. The research examined the impact that YM has on the role of the general manager based on Mintzberg’s classification of roles and Arnaldo’s sector-specific study. It presents evidence that the application of yield techniques are found to influence the time and importance that managers attach to key managerial roles. In addition, the study highlights that five key job components are ranked differently by hotel managers who practice extensive yield techniques, as opposed to those who operate minimal techniques. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
