In this study, we examined the relationship between electromechanical delay and excessive hypertensive response to exercise testing.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>Twenty-five people who had a hypertensive response to the exercise stress test and 28 people who were similar in age and gender with a normal blood pressure response in the exercise stress test as the control group were included in the study.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>There was no statistical difference between the study groups in blood pressure holter values, conventional echocardiography findings, and exercise stress test findings. Drug development projects face significant obstacles because of the rapid rise in antimicrobial drug resistance in the world healthcare system and the introduction of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains. In order to combat the MDR infections isolated from patients' bodies, the current study was conducted to evaluate and investigate the antibacterial capabilities of Tinospora cordifolia.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>Using the agar well diffusion method, Tinospora cordifolia extracts (aqueous, chloroform, and ethanol) were tested for their antibacterial effectiveness against 30 MDR pathogens, and the 3-(4,5-dimethyl-thiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide assay was used to determine the minimal inhibitory concentration. To determine whether there were any medicinally useful and significant bioactive ingredients in the plant extract, phytochemical analysis was performed.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>In comparison to the aqueous extract which had little effect, the antibacterial activity of ethanol and chloroform extracts exhibited a potential antimicrobial effect against most of the tested bacterial isolates. {"title":"Factors in Vaccine Refusal by Patients Applying for COVID-19 PCR Test.","authors":"Ferhat Arslan, Behcet Al, Gorkem Alper Solakoglu, Omer Faruk Gulsoy, Cagatay Nuhoglu, Sema Ayten","doi":"10.4274/MMJ.galenos.2023.43959","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4274/MMJ.galenos.2023.43959","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Objective: </strong>This study was designed to determine the reasons for vaccine rejection in patients who applied for the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test but did not receive the vaccine.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>The study was conducted prospectively in the emergency department of a tertiary hospital between 31.01.2022 and 31.05.2022. 1000 patients who applied for the COVID-19 PCR test and refused to be vaccinated were included. The COVID-19 status of the participants, reasons for their application, number of PCR tests, methods of obtaining information about the vaccine, and reasons for the rejection of the vaccine were questioned.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>54.6% of the participants were male and 45.4% were female. 60.7% of the patients applied for testing due to symptoms, 25.4% due to contact with people with symptoms, and 23.9% due to travel. 43.3% of the cases had COVID-19 infection; 53.6% of them had tested an average of 2-5 times in the last year. Most of the information about the vaccine was taken from social media, television, medical publications, and people around, respectively. Of the participants, 62.0% believed that COVID-19 vaccines had side effects, 47.3% believed that it had no protection, and 30.9% believed that there was not enough study on the subject. As the age grew, the rate of learning information from social media increased.</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>The most common reasons for COVID-19 vaccine rejection were vaccine side effects, doubtful vaccine protection, and concerns about the lack of sufficient studies on the vaccine. {"title":"Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte Ratio and Platelet-to-lymphocyte Ratio in the Patients with Euthyroid Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.","authors":"Hacer Nur Resber, Mumtaz Takir, Cundullah Torun","doi":"10.4274/MMJ.galenos.2023.41882","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4274/MMJ.galenos.2023.41882","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Objective: </strong>This study aimed to compare the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) values in patients with euthyroid Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) with healthy control subjects.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>This was a single-center, retrospective, cross-sectional study conducted on obese patients aged 18 years and over. The medical records of patients who presented with complaints of being overweight at the obesity clinic between April 2017 and May 2019 were examined. Patients and healthy individuals were included in the study consecutively until the sample sizes reached saturation. Patients with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic inflammatory disease, and malignancy were excluded from the study. The patients' anthropometric measurements, smoking status, blood examination, and thyroid ultrasounds were evaluated. The difference in means between the groups was calculated using the Mann-Whitney U test.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>The study included 179 participants, consisting of 93 patients and 86 healthy controls. The mean age was 46.6±14.1 years, with most females (91.6%). Although the NLR and PLR values in patients were higher than those in the control group, the difference did not reach statistical significance (p=0.427 and p=0.089, respectively). Furthermore, no significant difference was observed in NLR (p=0.191) and PLR (p=0.668) values between levothyroxine-treated and untreated patients. This study aimed to assess the correlation between thyroid function tests and PDA closure through medical or surgical interventions in newborns.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>This retrospective study was conducted on 65 newborns diagnosed with hemodynamically significant PDA (hs-PDA), with a premature rate of 81.5% (n=53). The subjects were divided into two groups according to the nature of the ductal closure as medically responsive \"MR-PDA\" or surgically treated \"ST-PDA\". The groups were compared in terms of thyroid hormone levels and other clinical parameters.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Thirty-three (51%) of all 65 patients had PDA and responded to medical treatment. Gestational week, birth weight, and mode of delivery were similar between the medical and surgical treatment groups (p>0.05). In this study, we discussed the results of pregnant women who underwent antenatal CMV screening in a tertiary center and the value of CMV antenatal screening.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>For this retrospective study, the data of pregnant patients with antenatal CMV screening test results between 2019 and 2022 were obtained from hospital records. CMV immunoglobulin M (IgM), CMV IgG, anti-IgG avidity test results, amniocentesis, CMV polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and the outcome of the babies were recorded.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>A total of 31,912 CMV IgM and 26,969 CMV IgG tests were performed. CMV IgG seropositivity was observed in 78.99% of pregnant women, and 0.09% of the pregnant women were confirmed to have a positive CMV IgM test result. Pregnant women with positive IgM accompanying low avidity were referred to perinatology clinics for detailed ultrasonography and amniocentesis. This study aims to determine the morphometric features of the scapula and provide essential information that supplies scapular biomechanics to produce a formula.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>The study was carried out on 34 dry scapulae in the laboratory of the Anatomy Department of the Faculty of Medicine, Bursa Uludag University. We used calipers for the linear measurements and the ImageJ program for the area and angle parameters. A total of 23 parameters were evaluated in the study. Statistical analyzes were performed using SPSS 22.0 software.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>According to the results of the correlation analysis, the highest correlation value of (R=0.957) was found to be the distance between the superior angle (angulus superior)-top of the glenoid plane and the inferior angle (angulus inferior)-the top of the glenoid plane. To estimate the glenopolar angle, we applied linear regression analysis and developed the following formula: Glenopolar angle =115.589 - (6.401 x the distance between the coracoid process and the top of the glenoid cavity) - (0.368 x angle between the glenoid plane and the lateral edge of the scapula extending towards the endpoint of the glenoid plane) (Adjusted R<sup>2</sup>=0.667).</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Glenopolar angle can provide information about the fracture risk of the glenoid cavity and allows orthopedic surgeons to make quick decisions about the risk in the region.
