{"title":"Challenges of Teacher Training in Sex Education","authors":"María Luisa Preinfalk-Fernández","doi":"10.15359/REE.19-1.5","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15359/REE.19-1.5","url":null,"abstract":"This article identifies the existing gaps in sex education in the student population of the Center for Research in Teaching and Education of the National University of Costa Rica, and its purpose is to contribute to the decision-making process to improve training for these students. A questionnaire was applied, using a structured sample stratified by unequal clusters, to 242 regular undergraduate students. The margin of error was 1.5 % and the confidence level was 95%. Data was tabulated using the CSPRO software and analyzed with the R software. A focus group was also held with teachers in sexuality courses in order to reflect on the results of the questionnaire application. Data was analyzed through the Integral Sexuality Approach and suggests that students lack the information necessary to exercise healthy, safe, and violence-free sexuality. This condition leads them to high risk situations because of the rare or lack of contraceptive use and the practice of coitus interruptus and makes them experience fears and guilt when being sexually active. Students have low sexual autonomy, which makes them vulnerable to violent situations and gives them stereotypes and prejudices that lead them to discriminate others for their sexual orientation or to become victims. In general, they are unaware of their reproductive and sexual rights and, therefore, are not capable of demanding them. El dibujo fue el medio de expresion que ninos y ninas utilizaron para comunicar de forma visual sus sentimientos, pensamientos, deseos, emociones e intereses, permitiendole a la docente investigadora construir nuevos aprendizajes. It expresses my experiences with nine of the fourteen families of students attending the special education school where I work. Students are in Early Intervention (0-3 years old), Kinder Garden (3-6 and a half years old) and the first cycle of elementary school (6 years and 6 months to 9 years old). Six of the participating families included a father and a mother, while the other three only included the mother. I met six times with the families for afternoon coffee over the course of a year. These gatherings evidenced the need for synchronizing the work done at home with the work offered in the occupational therapy service of which I am in charge, in order to support families in developing their children’s every day skills. This involves a process of analysis and reflection, which leads to the transformation of those of us who lived this experience. The paper also presents the families’ reality first from their individual standpoint and later in synchronization with the group, change that was exhibited after sharing with the other families. En este trabajo se presentan los principios y practicas pedagogicas que las personas participantes consideran pertinentes para la atencion, educacion y cuido de los menores de 3 anos. La investigacion responde a un enfoque cualitativo, porque permitio conocer apreciaciones y pensamientos relacionados con la educacion temprana. Participaron, en este estudio, docentes de preescolar y de educacion especial con experiencia en estimulacion temprana, familias cuyos hijos e hijas tuvieran edades comprendidas entre los 0 a 3 anos y centros infantiles que brindan servicios de atencion, educacion y cuido en las edades mencionadas. Para recopilar la informacion se recurre a la tecnica de la observacion en los centros infantiles, y se utilizan instrumentos como el cuestionario y la guia de observacion con notas de campo. El analisis de datos tiene un alcance descriptivo y se recurre a la triangulacion de datos. Entre las principales conclusiones se determina que las docentes, las familias y los centros infantiles observados, coinciden en que en las edades de interes de esta investigacion, se deben priorizar las relaciones afectivas y cognitivas de calidad con los ninos y las ninas, y los ambientes educativos deben organizarse dentro de un enfoque que permita el desarrollo humano dentro de principios como el respeto al ritmo de desarrollo y vida cotidiana del infante. {"title":"Predicción de la reprobación de cursos de matemática básicos en las carreras de Física, Meteorología, Matemática, Ciencias Actuariales y Farmacia","authors":"Luis Rojas-Torres","doi":"10.15359/REE.18-3.1","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15359/REE.18-3.1","url":null,"abstract":"This paper summarizes a study conducted in 2013 with the purpose of predicting the failure rate of math courses taken by Pharmacy, Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Physics and Meteorology students at Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR). Using the Logistics Regression statistical techniques applied to the 2010 cohort, failure rates were predicted of students in the aforementioned programs in one of their Math introductory courses (Calculus 101 for Physics and Meteorology, Math Principles for Mathematics and Actuarial Science and Applied Differential Equations for Pharmacy). For these models, the UCR admission average, the student’s genre, and the average correct answers in the Quantitative Skills Test were used as predictor variables. The most important variable for all models was the Quantitative Skills Test, and the model with the highest correct classification rate was the Logistics Regression. {"title":"Estilos de aprendizaje en estudiantes de la Escuela de Ciencias del Movimiento Humano y Calidad de Vida, Universidad Nacional, Costa Rica","authors":"Jorge Salas-Cabrera","doi":"10.15359/REE.18-3.9","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15359/REE.18-3.9","url":null,"abstract":"The purpose of this research was to determine the learning style of students majoring in the B.A. Programs in Physical Education, Sports and Recreation (BEFDR) and Physical Health Promotion (BPSF), and the Licentiate Degree in Sports Performance (LRD) at the School of Human Movement Sciences and Quality of Life. A total of 204 students participated in the study by answering the Horney-Alonso questionnaire (CHAEA). In general, results show that students tend to have a reflective learning style: BEFDR and LRD (14.34 ± 2.92), and BPSF (14.48 ± 2.72). As a conclusion, it was determined that the trend towards reflective learning is characteristic of those who received behavioral methodologies during their school career. A hybrid teaching strategy was proposed based on Problem-based Learning (PBL) principles combined with magisterial lectures. Digital and traditional didactic resources were also used in order to find the best mean to minimize the lack of attention in learners. The strategy was developed by sensitizing students to get involved in their formation process. PowerPoint presentations, video clips, the traditional white board and an ultra slim digital tablet board were used to develop the theoretical issues and present the solutions to the problems chosen for the PBL strategy. Finally, the strategy was evaluated and results were analyzed, indicating that using a hybrid strategy combining PBL and traditional magisterial lectures is an optimal resource to improve the learning process of students taking Thermodynamics 1. {"title":"El camino de la investigación acción como un proceso que construye y transforma: Una experiencia con personas voluntarias del ministerio Kadosh","authors":"Ana María Jara-Moreira","doi":"10.15359/REE.18-3.4","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15359/REE.18-3.4","url":null,"abstract":"This paper describes an action research process aimed at complementing the development of the project between the researcher and a team of 21 volunteers working with kids below the age of 9 at the Kadosh Ministry. The paper describes the journey taken, the actions accomplished, and the findings and learning experiences acquired regarding the integral development of children. The author also mentions the methodological implications of realizing this research project based on a naturalist paradigm stand point. Photo cameras, voice recorders and diverse written materials were used as instruments for collecting information. As part of the construction process associated to the researcher’s role, the process started from a vertical learning standpoint and later evolved towards an epistemological and ontological horizontal-circular relationship between participants, reflecting the new group intervention and interaction positions. These positions were not easy to establish but were achieved through dialog, friendship, conviviality and common interests.
