It is bounded by its own set of conventions, some of which are drawn from film theory and others from pragmatic considerations in under-resourced newsrooms. Although video production is increasingly a required skill for students graduating from journalism programs, there is a dearth of resources for undergraduate students interested in understanding why certain kinds of videos work better in some settings than others. This study conducts a rare analysis of popular, United States–focused textbooks to answer a foundational question: What is journalism? Drawing on concepts of journalism’s social function, this analysis finds the university textbooks are providing more upbeat messages, but significantly different definitions. General textbooks often emphasize a dominant, print-oriented watchdog role, while specialized books mostly accentuate journalists’ neighborly, multimedia approach to reporting everyday life. We found that the in-person positions emphasized more on the skills of verbal, interpersonal, and organizational communication, whereas the remote positions asked more for written communication. This study conducts the first content analysis on assessment plans from accredited programs using categories from a Council-generated guide as a best-practice document. Through a series of 50 interviews with journalism professionals and students, this research investigates how evidence-based journalism is created by gathering data on expert and novice research practices. Interviews were transcribed, coded, and analyzed through the lens of the ACRL Framework to provide the foundation for a journalism information literacy framework. Using United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) framework, this study explores the perception of faculty members across six key areas of general education and teacher development to improve the quality of media and information literacy in the country.
