However, a single TFR can not be considered optimum for all kinds of signals. This fact has motivated the development of a general optimization procedure to obtain a kernel specially matched to the signal under analysis. The procedure has two shortcomings: its computational complexity and its dependence on a parameter that is difficult to choose. In order to avoid this heavy procedure, this work proposes the use of TFR kernels based on the absolute value of the ambiguity function to obtain attributes related to the physical processes that generate the signals. The concept is applied to noise reduction in monocomponent signals combinations, determination of layer depth in reflection seismology, pitch contour extraction from speech signals and location of evoked potentials in brain signals. Experiments were performed using simulated and real signals. In each case, the selected kernel preserves the relevant information with minimum loss of resolution, and minimizes the cross-terms and other impurities that may affect the signal, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":373470,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of First International Caracas Conference on Devices, Circuits and Systems","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128957819","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The three-phase ferroresonance problem is first described within a system-theoretical framework. State equations are presented and stability conditions derived. A first order exothermical reaction takes place in the reactor vessel of the pilot plant, and the thermal condition of the external jacket is used to regulate the temperature of the reaction, The plant is accurately modelled in order to carry out the different neural control experiments simulating the plant and the controllers. White or colored noise is imposed on the process outputs during simulations so as to emulate real industrial situations. This will allow to test the effectiveness and robustness of neural networks for control of these types of reactors in noisy environments.","PeriodicalId":373470,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of First International Caracas Conference on Devices, Circuits and Systems","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121339856","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When the synthesis of antennas is subject to many restrictions the problem is very complex and becomes difficult to solve by classical optimization techniques because they are vulnerable to local minima problems. One relatively novel technique which could be used for the antenna synthesis is the use of Genetic Algorithms (GAs). In this article two methods for the synthesis of the radiation pattern of a linear array antenna based on GAs are presented. With these techniques it is possible to synthesize a radiation pattern specified by shaped beams and nulls in given directions. Results for different cases are presented.","PeriodicalId":373470,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of First International Caracas Conference on Devices, Circuits and Systems","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127167561","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A linear programming algorithm is used to calculate the time dial settings that minimize the sum of the operation times of the relays of the system for the faults under study, subject to the time coordination constraints associated to each of the system configurations that take place during the fault clearing process, considering the limits on the relay settings allowed by the corresponding devices and the time-current characteristic associated to each of the relays. Two real cases are presented to illustrate the application of the methodology: an industrial 5 bus system, with two 115/13.8 kV power transformers, and a realistic transmission and sub transmission network consisting of an 18 bus system with 63 kV and 230 kV transmission lines, 13 power transformers and 96 directional overcurrent relays.","PeriodicalId":373470,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of First International Caracas Conference on Devices, Circuits and Systems","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123922608","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
