The VAR has two advantages. First it allows us to jointly decompose the time series into a stationary trend and random shocks. We investigate the relation between the shocks to gain further insights into the correlation between the shocks. Second, using the VAR model we perform a Granger causality test to see whether one variable Granger causes the other. An important implication of Granger causality is that the lagged versions of one variables can help predict the other variable. We tested our models on daily Twitter and search data. We found that Twitter and search can simultaneously Granger cause each other, Twitter Granger causes search, and neither search nor Twitter Granger causes the other. When Granger causality holds, the VAR model reduces the standard deviation of the out-of-sample prediction error by over 37% when compared to the best univariate model.","PeriodicalId":369795,"journal":{"name":"Writing Technologies eJournal","volume":"391 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113967087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet, no attempt has been made to consolidate and synthesize this stream of literature. Based on a systematic review of 148 studies, the authors conduct a multi-dimensional analysis of eWOM communication, consumption and effects. Results show that the factors that drive consumers to generate/transmit eWOM include need for self-enhancement, social interaction and altruism. These factors also assure the generation of quality information that benefits consumers who seek eWOM. The findings indicate that the effects of eWOM on consumer and market-level outcomes are not linear and vary significantly owing to eWOM dimensions such as valence and volume, and across products and consumers. With social media and other eWOM platforms taking central stage in marketing and promotional strategies, it is important to consider the key effects of eWOM on metrics such as consumer loyalty, life-time value and service delivery costs.","PeriodicalId":369795,"journal":{"name":"Writing Technologies eJournal","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124274220","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several facets of ownership including issues related to the faculty owned course material and institute owned course materials have been discussed here. Just owning the course material may not bring in much benefit for the institute and the faculty. Utilization of the networking system can help tremendously in knowledge distribution beyond its boundaries, classrooms, space and time and both can be benefited. Then, who should own these course materials? The faculty who is the creditor of this bundle of knowledge or the institute which has engaged these full time facilities? This topic requires in depth study and research as the recent developments in Internet and communication technology have drastically changed the scenario of education in online context. The total system of information flow has become fuzzy and fluid. Learners are inclined more towards taking up online/distance education courses in higher education rather than classical type of education. The copyright protection of these courses materials is of major concern today, as both the institute and the faculty face the threat of losing the authority and benefit of owning these materials because of these drastic developments. Hence traditional way of dealing with IPR in the context of online course materials need be taken into consideration. The focus of the study is who should own the online course material: The Institute or the faculty involved in the development of the material.","PeriodicalId":369795,"journal":{"name":"Writing Technologies eJournal","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114666858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Brown","doi":"10.2139/SSRN.1026974","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2139/SSRN.1026974","url":null,"abstract":"The most plausible means for systematic UK government access to private-sector data is through voluntary agreements with the operators of systems and databases. This was how Internet Service Providers’ communications records were accessed by police before specific statutory provision was made in the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA). Sections 28-29 of the Data Protection Act 1998 allow such voluntary arrangements for purposes related to national security, law enforcement and taxation. Companies such as Facebook and RIM/BlackBerry have publicly acknowledged that they provide access to specific user data when UK public authorities follow the RIPA procedures, even though they are not legally required to. UK ISPs must retain records about their customers’ Internet sessions and e-mail, although not message contents, under the Data Retention Regulations 2009. The government continues to discuss new legal powers that would require ISPs to store records relating to their customers’ communications on webmail, social media and other sites, which could then be accessed on a semi-automated but particularized basis under RIPA. It is likely that for national security purposes the government’s signals intelligence agency, GCHQ, undertakes large-scale surveillance of Internet data transfers to or from points outside the UK. This can be authorized under RIPA, and telecommunications providers required to facilitate interception under that Act and the Telecommunications Act 1984. Under the UKUSA agreement GCHQ cooperates extremely closely with intelligence agencies in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It is likely that any access these agencies have to private-sector data will be shared to some extent. However, such activities are highly secret.","PeriodicalId":369795,"journal":{"name":"Writing Technologies eJournal","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115127154","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this research, temporal speech cueing was proposed to help young children as they listened to a speaking pedagogical agent direct their attention to details in on-screen text and graphics. An experiment was conducted with 4th and 5th graders (n = 133) who read on-screen text, and listened to cues presented by a pedagogical agent. Results showed that children in the speech cueing group out-performed those in the on-screen text group in immediate and delayed post-tests. Agent movement had no effect. Implications are discussed for helping young children to learn from the on-screen text presented in contemporary educational multimedia.","PeriodicalId":369795,"journal":{"name":"Writing Technologies eJournal","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126691607","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An analysis of the 95 Italian higher education institutions highlights how nearly half of the universities (51.6%) have an official presence on at least one social media. In particular, private institutions and small-medium size universities are those that are mostly embracing the relational potentialities of these participatory media. Finally, in order to evaluate the social media performances of the analyzed institutions, we introduce the 'university social media performance index' (USMPI).Implications for public relation research and practices are discussed.","PeriodicalId":369795,"journal":{"name":"Writing Technologies eJournal","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128973386","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We explore two possibilities. First, decision makers may seek information they expect will support their leader (leader-supporting search). Second, decision makers may seek information about their leader, irrespective of the expected valence of the information (leader-focused search). Across various studies, product domains and experimental designs, we consistently find that decision makers engage in leader-focused search, not leader-supporting search. We also find that leader-focused search can steer decision makers towards information sources that are less important, less credible, and objectively suboptimal.","PeriodicalId":369795,"journal":{"name":"Writing Technologies eJournal","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128729050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This proposed city (which would, theoretically, cover the globe) was intended to prompt all people to express their creativity through their constant reconfiguration of its open and malleable living space. Explicitly designed for homo ludens, in it social life was to be constituted by architectural play. But, as Mark Wigley has noted, \"play was the whole point of New Babylon but not its mode of production.\" As designer of this universalizing and revolutionary play-space, Constant's role entailed the contrivance of open-endedness, and thus implicitly relied upon the very artistic authority that the Situationists had rejected (Constant left the Situationists in 1960). Today, fifty years after he began his project, we can witness similar ideals and contradictions in the virtual world Second Life, an architected social space which also claims to be an infinitely malleable forum for creative expression. In this article I trace to what extent the ideological foundations of both of these projects can be linked to postwar attitudes toward technology and authority on both sides of the Atlantic, and explore how they each draw upon notions of play in distinctive ways. Arriving at the same ideals and contradictions via separate but related paths, New Babylon and Second Life reflect two responses to the challenges of design and post-bureaucratic hopes for the productivity of play.","PeriodicalId":369795,"journal":{"name":"Writing Technologies eJournal","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124621824","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unlike other educational technologies, the tutoring system provides instruction and feedback that is tailored to each individual student and addresses not only problem-solving outcomes but also problem-solving processes. To assess the effectiveness of the tutoring system, we administered a pre-test and then required students in a sophomore accounting course to use either the tutoring system or their textbook as a reference when journalizing transactions for a homework assignment. We then administered a post-test. A pre-post analysis showed that the tutor group’s test performance increased approximately 27% points, whereas the textbook group’s test performance improved by only 8% points. Implications of these findings for instructors and researchers are discussed.","PeriodicalId":369795,"journal":{"name":"Writing Technologies eJournal","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128533148","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We then examine the ideology classifiers' person-dependency and time-dependency. We found that ideology classifiers trained on 2005 House speeches can be generalized to the Senate speeches of the same year, but not vice versa. The ideology classifiers trained on 2005 House speeches predict recent year Senate speeches better than older speeches, which indicates the classifiers' time-dependency. This dependency may be caused by changes in the issue agenda or the ideological composition of Congress.","PeriodicalId":369795,"journal":{"name":"Writing Technologies eJournal","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121848807","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
