A simulation-based framework is designed to assess such decisions in a dynamic and stochastic environment. Requirements for performance assessment of sustainable manufacturing decisions are derived in a first step. The architecture of the framework is then designed. We specify components that model the supplied energy and the energy consumption of the manufacturing processes. Moreover, a component for demand generation is described. A component that deals with modeling user preferences with respect to conventional and to new sustainability performance measures is also sketched. The framework is illustrated by assessing the performance of an energy-aware scheduling algorithm for batch processing machines in a rolling horizon setting.","PeriodicalId":369368,"journal":{"name":"2021 Winter Simulation Conference (WSC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129563658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is a critical question within photolithography workstations in semiconductor manufacturing systems. For this purpose, a recently developed Simulation Optimization (SO) method named Evolutionary Learning Based Simulation Optimization (ELBSO) is implemented to solve a set of designed Stochastic Job Shop Scheduling problems captured from a real semiconductor manufacturing data set. Experiment results indicate that the best performance in each shift occurs when machines are flexible in terms of processing different job operations, and the selected jobs for a certain shift have as equal as possible due dates.","PeriodicalId":369368,"journal":{"name":"2021 Winter Simulation Conference (WSC)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128529735","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, data may depend on the decision of the time when they are generated. We take an online approach to jointly estimate the input parameter via Bayesian posterior distribution and update the decision by applying stochastic gradient descent (SGD) on the Bayesian average of the objective function. We show the convergence of our approach. In particular, our consistency result of Bayesian posterior distribution with decision-dependent data might be of independent interest to Bayesian estimation. We demonstrate the empirical performance of our approach on a simple numerical example.","PeriodicalId":369368,"journal":{"name":"2021 Winter Simulation Conference (WSC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129148055","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The framework draws upon hybrid simulation, supply chain resilience and medicine supply chain literature. The utility of the proposed framework is presented through the development of a case model of a generic (off-patent) case medicine in the Norwegian system to perform scenario-based experiments on disruption events and interventions. Two disruption scenarios are evaluated a demand shock e.g., hoarding, and a supply shock, e.g., a major disruption at a key supplier. The effect of these disruptions on the system without interventions is compared with proactive and reactive interventions, namely prepositioned stock, and flexible ordering. Future directions for framework development have been identified.","PeriodicalId":369368,"journal":{"name":"2021 Winter Simulation Conference (WSC)","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126666168","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The industry specific characteristics of short product life cycles, long lead times and a highly competitive market environment are further decreasing flexibility, although a robust and adjustable supply chain is required. In order to enable greater flexibility, this study investigates the hypothesis that Revenue Management is able to offer greater fulfilment of customer expectations, while at the same time initiating a revenue increase in the semiconductor industry. We tested this hypothesis in a discrete-event simulation based on a case study obtained from a semiconductor company. The study indicates that global supply chains, such as the ones in the semiconductor industry, should use Revenue Management methods in order to increase their revenue by 10% to 19% as well as to improve flexibility and customer satisfaction.","PeriodicalId":369368,"journal":{"name":"2021 Winter Simulation Conference (WSC)","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114199598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Reinforcement learning (RL) solvers are adaptive and potentially robust in highly stochastic settings. However, benchmarking RL solutions for stochastic problems is challenging, requiring the simulation of complex production settings while guaranteeing reproducible stochasticity. No such simulation is currently available. To cover this gap, we introduce FabricatioRL, an RL compatible, customizable and extensible benchmarking simulation framework. Our contribution is twofold: We first derive requirements to ensure that generic production setups can be covered, the simulation framework can interface with both traditional approaches and RL, and experiments are reproducible. Then, we detail the FabricatioRL design and implementation satisfying the obtained requirements in terms of framework input, core simulation process, and the interface with different scheduling systems.","PeriodicalId":369368,"journal":{"name":"2021 Winter Simulation Conference (WSC)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121619869","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the experiment objectives of such operations, an experiment team creates a virtual experimentation environment in which multiple human subjects can collaborate to achieve mission objectives. Afterwards, analysts assess the effectiveness of new technologies or procedures under test. While there is much value in conducting simulation-based HITL experimentation, there is also a large degree of complexity. This paper presents a framework for managing the complexity of executing such an experiment by dividing the experiment team into several smaller specialized teams that collaborate using processes described in this paper. An innovation leadership team, scenario team, technical team, and Data Collection and Analysis (DCA) team work together to plan and execute the experiment and assess results. An experiment team can use the methodology presented here to manage complexity and, ultimately, accomplish the objectives of collaborative simulation-based HITL experiments.","PeriodicalId":369368,"journal":{"name":"2021 Winter Simulation Conference (WSC)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121646954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The demand for real-time decision-making in the manufacturing industry has given significant attention to the field of Digital Twin (DT). The whole idea revolves around creating a digital counterpart of the physical system based on enterprise data to exploit the effects of numerous parameters and make informed decisions. Based on that, this paper proposes a simulation-optimization framework for the DT model of a Beverage Manufacturing Plant. A data-driven simulation model developed in Simio is integrated with Python to perform Multi-Objective optimization. The framework explores optimal solutions by simulating multiple scenarios by altering the availability of operators and dispatching/scheduling rules. The results show that simulation optimization can be integrated into the Digital-Twin models as part of real-time production planning and scheduling.","PeriodicalId":369368,"journal":{"name":"2021 Winter Simulation Conference (WSC)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125721639","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Modeling can certainly be fun, but it can also be quite challenging. With the new demands of Smart Factories, Digital Twins, and Digital Transformation, the challenges multiply. You want your first and every project to be successful, so you can justify continued work. However, the heterogeneity in agent-based models poses a challenge for SSAs. To allow for an efficient simulation, we take SSAs that exploit dependency graphs for population-based models and adapt them to agent-based models. We integrate our approach with object-oriented frameworks for agent-based simulation by detecting dependencies via aspect-oriented programming (AOP). This way, modelers can implement models without manually recording dependency information, while still executing the models with efficient, dependency-aware SSAs. We provide an open-source implementation of our approach for the framework MASON, showing significant speedups in model execution.","PeriodicalId":369368,"journal":{"name":"2021 Winter Simulation Conference (WSC)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127982358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
