However, the number of CIS students choosing Taiwan as the destination of their tertiary education keeps hiking up substantially despite more choices of higher education provided locally after the liberalisation. In light of this, this study aims to explore factors affecting country choice of Malaysian students from CIS in the meantime while they were to further their tertiary education. A mixed-method design was employed to investigate factors shaping this peculiar phenomenon. The researchers identified eight push-pull factors from the data coding of a focus group discussion in the first phase of the study. Based on the results, a questionnaire was crafted in the second phase of the study. Then, by engaging a purposive sampling, 869 Senior Three CIS students were recruited from several CIS in different states of Malaysia to participate in the survey at the second phase of the study. The findings revealed the importance of demographic factors administering CIS students in choosing Taiwan as a popular destination of pursuing tertiary education. In addition, the use of Chinese language as the medium of instruction in teaching and financial consideration were the pull factors contributing to the interpretation of the choice made by this group of participants. Furthermore, students’ perspective of choosing future career path and their concern of family also determine their choice of higher education. Overall, the study highlighted the importance to include demographic factors in the push-pull model. It further provides factual information for the stakeholders or policy makers to incorporate more effective strategies in recruiting CIS students.","PeriodicalId":36930,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Educators and Education","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43776391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Educators should employ teaching approaches to make teaching and learning more effective. This paper discusses the effects of teaching meta-discussion strategies on low English profeciency students’ achievement in oral English. This study used a quasi-experimental design using a non-equivalent control-group design. The sample population was 177 students comprising of 94 students in the experimental group and 83 students in the control group. The students in the experimental group were exposed to metadiscussion strategies for seven weeks under the guidance of two instructors. This study used the indicators of teaching and learning process questionnaire (InTLPQ) to measure the respondents’ level of meta-cognitive awareness, meta-attention, meta-comprehension and meta-cognitive reflection. The independent variables in this study are meta-cognitive awareness, meta-attention and meta-comprehension. The data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results of the MANOVA revealed that there was a statistically significant difference in the post-test score between the treatment and control groups with the value p = 0.00; p < 0.01. The Stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated both that the three independent variables are correlated and that they contributed positively to the achievement of the respondents’ oral English. In conclusion, with constant practice of these strategies, students could enhance their oral ability by overcoming their weaknesses during the learning process. The present study tries to examine the potential contribution of using pictures for developing EFL students’ writing. For so doing, 34 Iranian EFL learners were selected and randomly divided into two groups, namely control group and experimental group. Before the experiment, both groups answered a writing task as the pre-test. Then, in the experimental group, pictures were used for teaching writing. Thus, when students were asked to write about a topic in the classroom, they were shown some related pictures about that topic. However, in the control group, no picture was used. After 16 sessions of instruction, the same writing task was administered as the post-test in order to measure the effect of using pictures on students’ writing development. Then, the performance of the two groups in the pre-test and post-test was compared using ANCOVA. The results indicated that the experimental group could write more words, had less grammatical errors, and used more cohesive devices compared to the control one in the post-test. These findings substantiated the positive effect of using pictures in teaching EFL writing.","PeriodicalId":36930,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Educators and Education","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67728084","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Having the correct information and understanding will alleviate the psychological burden faced by family members in dealing with children with special educational needs. This study aimed to explore the knowledge and understanding of parents with special needs on the job marketability of their children. This qualitative study was conducted with 11 multi-case multi-site families of special education students. The consultation process for phase one involved consultations conducted by special education teacher trainees. The second phase of consultation and collaborative process involved students and special education students with undergraduate education guidance and counselling. The verbatim data were analysed using NVivo 11. The study showed that families still lack knowledge in the marketability of their special needs children particularly due to the limited information channel. The findings showed that knowledge on job marketability can help the parents plan their special needs children’s job marketability, which in turn, would directly contribute to the family wellbeing.","PeriodicalId":36930,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Educators and Education","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67727993","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This model framework draws upon theoretical insights into perspectives on learning and empirical studies to improve the teaching of electrochemistry by using the learning demand and the communicative approach. The learning demand identifies the differences between everyday social language and the school scientific language in terms of both content and the nature of the knowledge that are used to represent the same phenomena. The communicative approach focuses on the classroom discourse, especially on how the teacher interacts with the students when new ideas are introduced on the social plane of the classroom. These two design tools present the fundamental guidelines that could be utilised in designing a teaching sequence to improve students’ conceptual understanding in any specific learning of science content. A study on two intact groups that had similar academic ability was carried out. The experimental class was conducted using the design teaching whilst the baseline group (comparison group) had followed the normal classroom teaching. The students’ conceptual understanding in both classes was tested using a post-diagnostic test. The evaluation of students’ responses of the items in the post diagnostic test was carried out using the ideographic and nomothetic approaches. The results show that there were significant differences in the experimental students’ performances in comparison to the students in the baseline group. The findings suggest that the learning demand and different types of discourses had enabled students to explain some aspects of electrolytic cell content in details. The experimental students Nur Jahan Ahmad et al. 188 had demonstrated better conceptual scientific understanding than the baseline group in the learning area concerning the nature of electrolytes in the electrolytic cell.","PeriodicalId":36930,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Educators and Education","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67728441","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
