{"title":"Classroom Pedagogy in German and Malaysian Secondary Schools: A Comparative Study","authors":"S. Saleh","doi":"10.21315/APJEE2018.33.5","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21315/APJEE2018.33.5","url":null,"abstract":"The purpose of this study was to compare and investigate the similarities and differences of classroom pedagogy between German and Malaysian secondary schools. Two classes with almost similar characteristics conducted by experienced teachers (in Germany and Malaysia) were consecutively observed naturally for three periods of 90 minutes each within one month. The observations were orientated into frame and act based on A Generic Model of Teaching proposed by Robin J. Alexander. The field notes written during observations of the two classes were then transcribed, coded down and analysed qualitatively. Data obtained revealed that there were similarities as well as differences between classroom pedagogy with the two classes. The findings reported in this paper shall provide some insights on the educational setting in the secondary schools of both countries. It focuses on their self-development plan, the possible constraints they may encounter in their life transition to adulthood, and suggestions for a better transition to young adulthood. A purposive sample of 10 young people was interviewed. Themes that emerged included lack of concrete self-development plans among young people, prevalence of collective ‘self’, influence of Chinese value of ‘face’ culture, dependent on families for extended periods, alternative career plan, time and poor academic background as constraints to pursuing self-development plans, high tuition fees and travelling expense affecting training opportunities, difficulties of pursuing one’s own business due to domination of big enterprises, identity crisis in actualising self-development plans, importance of education as a form of self-development and need for training in interpersonal relationship and interviewing skills. This study has revealed insights on the self-development plans of young people affected by Chinese culture and values and the interplay of ecological systems in the Hong Kong context. Previous studies have identified the factors that have contributed to online distance learning students’ failure as lack of time and lack of motivation. The purpose of this study is to develop a direct effect understanding of extrinsic motivation, intrinsic motivation, self-efficacy and time management on students’ academic performance in an online distance learning institution in Malaysia. The Structural Equation Model (SEM) was used to analyse the casual relationships between independent variables and dependent variables. The model was developed and later tested by adopting the Partial Least Square (PLS) procedure on data collected from a survey that yielded 210 usable questionnaires. The findings showed that extrinsic motivation, intrinsic motivation, self-efficacy and time management have a significant and positive influence on students’ academic performance in an online distance learning institution. The findings imply that the relationship amongst extrinsic motivation, intrinsic motivation, self-efficacy and time management on a student’s academic performance in an online distance learning institution will lead to the online distance learning institution’s low attrition rate. A total of 693 pre-service teachers (male = 187, female = 506) from three public universities participated in this cross-sectional survey study. Responses from the 8-item Flourishing Scale was used to assess the status of social-psychological functioning. The results were then analysed using the IBM SPSS Statistics version 23. We reported statistically significant association between social-psychological functioning and gender (p = .000), the first year was significantly lower social-psychological functioning score than that of other groups (p = .033), while, the pure arts students demonstrated significantly higher mean score compared to other fields of study (p = .000). The analysis also showed that there was a moderate and positive relationship between socialpsychological functioning and academic achievement (r = .402, p = .000). However, mastering the learning of vocabulary poses difficulties to the English as a Second Language (ESL) learners. Hence, it is important to identify the appropriate approaches in learning the vocabulary. This study aims to examine the benefits and drawbacks of using the tablet-based digital storytelling application in vocabulary learning among young ESL learners. Qualitative case study has been employed as the research design of this study utilised interviews, documentation and observations techniques. The participants involved in this study were six 11-year-old ESL learners of different level of language proficiency (high, intermediate and low) selected through purposive sampling. The findings revealed that there were eight benefits and five drawbacks in using the digital storytelling application on tablet to learn vocabulary among the ESL learners. It is found that the use of this vocabulary learning application on tablet is suitable to be used as a vocabulary learning material among the learners. This study is significant to the curriculum planners, educators and learners in planning and determining the materials that is suitable to be used for vocabulary learning among the young ESL learners.
