To date, demand studies have predominantly focused on economic variables to explain tourism demand. While this is well established, recent research demonstrates the importance of not limiting demand specification to economic variables only. This study proposes an interdisciplinary approach to tourism demand by incorporating the relative quality of life index into the demand specification. Using data from the United States and its 30 top source markets, the findings demonstrate that, in addition to traditional economic variables, a relative quality of life index that encompasses education, health, and stability is a significant predictor of tourism demand.","PeriodicalId":369021,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139853838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through multiple stages of qualitative and quantitative investigations using U.S. and U.K. samples, this study identified eight distinct features of SSIE: efficiency, ease of use, learning, socialization, newness, safety, flow, and seamlessness. The study findings also validate the aforementioned scale through two robustness tests and reveal significant relationships between the aforementioned SSIE attributes and the service encounter evaluations of family travelers. This study theoretically contributes to the development of smart hotel conceptualizations and the nascent research on family travelers. Furthermore, the study findings imply many valuable, practical suggestions for hotel practitioners who plan to invest in smart hotel operations and target family travelers.","PeriodicalId":369021,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139853252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Results across two studies show that growth-minded job seekers exhibit significantly higher levels of perceived organizational attractiveness and job pursuit intentions toward commitment-focused (vs. achievement-focused) recognition. In contrast, there was no discernible difference among fixed-minded job seekers. Notably, these effects were moderated by recognized individuals’ organizational status (i.e., employee vs. management) and the recognition reshare party (i.e., recognized individual vs. company). Moreover, the findings observed that the conditional effects were underpinned by the mechanism of inspiration. This research offers valuable insights for the hospitality management literature and provides pragmatic recommendations for hospitality firms and HR professionals aiming to attract growth-minded potential employees.","PeriodicalId":369021,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139592019","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study presents a comprehensive review of big data forecasting in the tourism and hospitality industry, critically evaluating existing research and identifying five key research questions and trends that require further attention. These include the lack of theoretical foundation, the rise of high-frequency forecasting research, less attention to unstructured data, the necessity of dynamic data analysis in forecasting, and the construction of a tourism and hospitality demand information system based on cloud computing. Importantly, this study constructs a theoretical framework by combining relevant theories from psychology, communication, information processing, and other fields. Five types of big data used for tourism and hospitality forecasting are identified: web-based volume data, social media statistics, textual data, photo data, and video data. Additionally, more recent tactics such as mixed data sampling and machine learning methods are discussed.","PeriodicalId":369021,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139592235","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We adopt a transformative tourism perspective to propose the eudaimonic approach and draw on spill over theory to identify the hedonic approach. The two approaches to post-trip well-being promotion were examined using time-lagged data collected via three survey waves from 208 Chinese tourists. The results indicate that, eudaimonically, the meaning in life experienced in tourism triggers authentic living after returning home, while hedonically, positive emotions during the trip foster post-travel satisfaction with tourism, both of which facilitate long-term well-being. This study not only contributes to tourism and well-being literature by establishing novel paths through which tourism can fulfill its underestimated potential for sustained well-being benefits, but also adds to diverse alternative fields pertaining to existential authenticity, spill over theory, and transformative tourism.","PeriodicalId":369021,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139606709","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The market for virtual events has expanded considerably, with a concomitant rise in the demand for research on the nature and dynamics of virtual events. However, research on virtual event quality (VEQual) remains in its infancy, lagging behind the industry’s rise and resulting in a lack of understanding of the concept and how it is measured. This study aims to develop and validate a psychometrically sound and managerially useful instrument for measuring VEQual. This study allows both researchers and practitioners to investigate and operationalize a focal concept, VEQual, contributing to a better understanding of the measurement of various aspects of virtual events.","PeriodicalId":369021,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139447954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study adopted a mixed-methods approach to investigate the underlying psychological mechanism of attendees to actively participate in experience co-creation. The quantitative results validated the experience economy scale within the esports event context. Facilitated by Leximancer, qualitative findings revealed that co-creation elements are key ingredients that contribute to the quality of event experiences. The co-created experience at in-person esports events involves interactions among multiple actors, the physical environment, and other contributing factors that shape the overall experience. The study identified four key dimensions as crucial factors in co-creating a high-quality esports experience: shared fantasy world, immersive experience, social-learning experience, and active engagement. The proposed framework sheds light on a better understanding of the quality of experiences in esports events and provides valuable insights for industry practitioners.","PeriodicalId":369021,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139385982","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study examines the impact of environmental, economic, and social factors on destination popularity, while introducing a new sustainable tourism index as a novel approach to measuring sustainability in destinations. The study acknowledges that, although popular destinations generate high revenue, excessive popularity can have negative consequences for long-term destination appeal. Unlike the traditional country-level and qualitative approach, the proposed index relies on open-source data, allowing for frequent updates at the local level. By analyzing 2,164 U.S. counties, the study reveals a positive relationship between economic, environmental, and social factors and destination popularity, with variation in the magnitude of these effects. The study also presents examples of potential applications for the proposed index, offering valuable insights into the complex dynamics of destination popularity, and providing a practical tool for assessing sustainable tourism.","PeriodicalId":369021,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139451238","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the Stimulus-Organism-Response paradigm, we proposed novel effects that substantive servicescape has a positive effect on inspiration, which has a positive downstream effect on satisfaction. The present research, including a field survey with customers from 10 three- to four-star hotels ( N1 = 644) and three experimental studies ( N2 = 133, N3 = 115, N4 = 227), examined the effects of substantive and communicative servicescape on inspiration, the downstream effect of inspiration on satisfaction, and the moderating roles of openness to experience and prior experience. The results supported our proposed effects. Furthermore, openness to experience and prior experience moderated the effects of substantive servicescape on inspiration and inspiration on satisfaction, respectively.
