In such a situation, the Abbasids, especially the Caliph al-Nasser, followed the process of recovering the Caliphate political hegemony, while and the Khwarizmi’s, in parallel, were planning a rigid dominance on Islamic world’s eastern regions including Baghdad, the capital of the Caliphate, to restrict its power in religious affairs. But after several battles between the armies of both sides, Sultan Muhammad Khwārazmshāh failed finally. This article attempts to recognize and analyze the motives and causes of the contrast that existed between these two power centers and their subsequent political and military consequences. \u0000Keywords: Abbasid Caliphate, Al-Nāsser Ledin-Allah, Khwārazmshāh, Sultān Muhammad, the Ismāilia.","PeriodicalId":36736,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Islamic Thought and Civilization","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43512815","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Waqf has been a supporting pillar for the upholding of the social-religious institutions of society for centuries. The method taken in this research is the historical-phenomenological approach. The result shows that waqf began to be known and practiced since the Prophet Muhammad built the Quba and the Nabawi Mosque. The same was further promoted by the Righteous Caliphs (Khulafa al-Rashidin) and the caliphs afterward. In the next period, waqf became rapidly developing in the Middle Eastern countries, such as Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Sudan, Kuwait, and Syria. The development of waqf is not only in religious facilities but also in agricultural land, plantations, educational institutions, apartments, money, and shares. All of them are managed productively, and their use varies greatly. Waqf played an urgent role even in pioneering contemporary Islamic civilization. There are two patterns of management of waqf assets for the development of Islamic civilization: first, the development of waqf for social activities, such as waqf for social justice, people's welfare, education development, health facilities, public policy advocacy, legal assistance, environmental preservation, the development of arts and culture and other programs; second, development of economic value, such as for the development of trade, industry, property purchase, and other economic activities.Keywords: Endowments, Development of Waqf, Social Activities, Contemporary Islamic Civilization","PeriodicalId":36736,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Islamic Thought and Civilization","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48936631","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In controlling the quick spreading of COVID-19, the enforcement of lockdown has been employed in many counties. Unfortunately, the lockdown affects all industries as well as the whole nation in terms of spiritual, physical, emotional, financial, and intellectual states. Therefore, this paper attempts to examine the effects of lockdown on spiritual, physical, emotional, intellectual, and financial states of the Islam believers from Malaysia, Oman, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Turkey. Through systematic literature review, this paper designed a questionnaire survey and collected information from 208 respondents. Prior to the primary data collection, a pilot study was conducted to test the reliability of the designed questionnaire survey. This paper found that the COVID-19 lockdown has positive effects on the spiritual, intellectual, and physical states of the believers of Islam. On the other hand, the COVID-19 lockdown also leads to unstable emotion of the believers of Islam as well as the financial issues. The findings may help in future study, religious departments, and the authority bodies of the countries to strategize the plan of actions in minimising the impact of lockdown on the nations.","PeriodicalId":36736,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Islamic Thought and Civilization","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49035356","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to chart out the stages of such a journey, this research does a thematic analysis of Hesse’s masterpiece, Siddhartha, and Rumi’s selected poems and draw parallels in the themes projected by both the writers. The objective of the study is to make inter-generic reading of the mystical texts and derive common features from them. The motive behind the selection of these texts is to highlight the phenomenon of resurrected self from two different perspectives i.e. Eastern Sufism and Western Mysticism and to merge them to propose a comprehensive perspective to understand the Divine. Taking inspiration from Fowler, we have categorized the spiritual journey into three stages which are labeled as The Childhood stage, The Adulthood stage and The Young stage.[1] At the first stage, a person remains focused on his/her selfish desires such as the desire to achieve reputation, honor and wealth which eventually leads him/her towards different recalcitrant feelings like jealousy, anger and hatred. At the second stage when a person becomes a little mature, s/he starts swimming against the current of naive attempts to attain happiness and struggles to find the eternal source of happiness and peace. At the third and the last stage, s/he achieves the ultimate source or truth of happiness and is considered as a divine source for others.","PeriodicalId":36736,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Islamic Thought and Civilization","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69534410","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Christians of Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries began to explore the world and discovered new continents. They disseminated their views related to the peoples of the world, especially the Muslims, through their travelogues and books. It is generally acknowledged that the books published from the national pedestal are always biased. Hence, the analysis of books that are politically and religiously oriented is a very important task. Keeping this purpose in view, this article discusses the case of Vincent le Blanc as the second European non-Muslim to visit Makkah and Madinah. It argues that, in reality, the man never did as he claimed. The visit was staged mainly for the interest of Christian anti-Islamic polemics. The justification of this contention is two-pronged. Le Blanc’s fallacious, self-contradictory and irrational accounts of Makkah and Madinah, their holy mosques, and of hajj rituals are scrutinized. It is followed by bringing to fore his extensive plagiarism of the work of Ludovico di Varthema. The findings of this study suggest that the books written by tourists such as Le Blanc are characterised by biases and alienated approaches. Therefore, their propositional as well as linguistic material should always be viewed cautiously to safeguard against their misleading contents.","PeriodicalId":36736,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Islamic Thought and Civilization","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46943759","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All sectors including the economic sector, tourism, services, sports, the religious sector and entertainment have been subjected to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), such as the wearing of face masks, hygienic care and physical distancing. Although compliance with the SOPs can still be questioned, it is undeniable that it has changed the society’s way of living in Malaysia as the people are urged to adopt and adapt to the new norms in order to combat the spread of the virus. In fact, social change in times of COVID-19 can be considered as a new ‘urf (custom) practiced by the whole Islamic world. The issue is that these new changes coming with the application of the various SOPs for virus prevention are claimed to be for the benefit of religion, health, economy and education. Through phenomenal methodologies/Using a phenomenological methodology, this study emphasizes two main objectives, that are, explaining social change due to COVID-19 in Malaysia and analysing the correlation between social change and the parameters of maqāsid al-sharī‘ah (the higher purposes of Shari’ah) in each new practice. In conclusion, it should be emphasized that the current social change must correspond with maqasid al-shari’ah especially in dealing with the matters of the religion.","PeriodicalId":36736,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Islamic Thought and Civilization","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46467806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Polygamy is practiced by males, particularly for various justifiable reasons. The current study aims to analyze the interplay of culture and religion to describe the existing practice of polygamy in Punjab, Pakistan. It is further interested in analyzing the male perspective regarding the practice of polygamy. The study is theoretically grounded in the patriarchal theory and Agarwal’s concept of bargaining in gender relations. In Pakistan, like many other Muslim countries, religion is the major support taken by men for practicing polygamy along with other cultural justifications. Wife’s infertility or inability to produce the male offspring and forced marriage practices are amongst the major justifications of polygamy found in the current study. During this phenomenological research, the researchers included the male perspective only by targeting 5 polygamous marital unions from the various parts of the Punjab province. The findings include forced marriages, cousin marriages, age difference in first marriage, first wife’s infertility and inability to produce the male offspring, and the absence of male successor in case of landowning families as major causes for males being polygamous. The study also found males from different socioeconomic backgrounds living in polygamous marital unions. This study suggests that the patriarchal interpretation of religion and culture needs to be defined and the prevalent justification of polygamous marriages needs to be revisited. Similarly, the true Islamic intent for marrying multiple women and of equality and justice amongst wives needs to be explored through scholarly research.","PeriodicalId":36736,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Islamic Thought and Civilization","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69534402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study is designed to analyze the approach of the Australian press towards the Muslims and Islam when it covers the terrorist incidents in Australia and in other part of the world, especially in the western countries. The news related to terrorist incidents and activities published during a six-month timeframe, that is, from October 2016 to March 2017, in two popular newspapers namely The Daily Telegraph (leaning towards the Liberal Party) and The Courier Mail (right-centered newspaper in its nature) was thoroughly analyzed. The major objective was to know how these newspapers frame the Muslims and Islam in their news contents when the issue of terrorism is under discussion. Despite the different political leanings of the selected newspapers, their approach towards the Muslims and Islam was found to be similar as both the dailies framed the terrorism related stories in a way to associate the Muslims and Islam with terrorism.","PeriodicalId":36736,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Islamic Thought and Civilization","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42534394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The colonial government proposed establishing a provident fund for African workers. They noted that the pension scheme was not favorable because it required the investment of significant resources and subsidies by the government. Following independence, the Kenyan government announced the implementation of social security for its people. The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) was established by an Act of parliament Cap 258 in November 1965, however, contributions began in July 1966 to allow it to operate as the National Provident Fund. Since her independence Kenya has undergone several pension reforms, culminating in the enactment of the NSSF Act in 2013. The pension scheme has received significant attention from the Muslim clerics. Some fatawa have been issued stating that the retirement benefits are not Sharī‘ah compliant. This situation might jeopardize the retirement goal and put the retirees in financial difficulty by denying them their benefits. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the conformity of Sharī‘ah in Kenya’s pension fund operation. Inductive method was used to examine the operational methods of the social security fund from both the perspectives of pension scheme and Islamic jurisprudence in order to mutually integrate them. Likewise, the researchers used the analytical approach to clarify the opinions of the Muslim scholars regarding the pension scheme products and to highlight some areas of inconsistency with Islamic law in order to provide Islamic alternatives. The results showed that pension scheme funds are inconsistent with Islamic law. Therefore, it is recommended for NSSF to open Islamic windows to meet the demands of the Muslim workers seeking Sharī‘ah  compliant products / services.","PeriodicalId":36736,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Islamic Thought and Civilization","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69534234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, there have been calls by Muslim scholars and clerics to bridge the gap between Islam and science, especially for young Muslims, by harmonising science and Islam in education. This study aims to analyze the documents pertaining to Islam, Science, and Education (ISE) extracted from the historical literature. For the purpose of analysis, firstly documents were retrieved from a scientific database and secondly, a descriptive analysis of temporal trends was conducted. The documents clustered according to as the time-lined categories were and then analysed qualitatively. Later, using VOS viewer, the analysis of spatial distribution, networks, and keywords was conducted. It was found that the evolution of ISE converged into a broader spectrum from earlier in medicine and later to other areas, which encompassed Qur’ānic studies, social studies and economics, and even technology. The volume of publication versus the network links strength provided evidence that there is a need to stimulate collaborative works by/through knowledge dissemination through/from an authoritative platform for the researches concerning ISE. This study also discovered that some severe biases that might contribute towards the results being skewed in the finding or even underrepresentation of scholarly works in ISE. The findings of this study are beneficial for the researchers reviewing this topic and the educators working to harmonize Islam and science in education.","PeriodicalId":36736,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Islamic Thought and Civilization","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69534207","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
