While the former, called kanji characters, are ubiquitous in Japanese, the latter, called kokuji characters, remain largely unknown and thus infrequently used. It is then meaningful and interesting to investigate these local characters, and that in a global manner, that is considering them as a whole rather than focusing on particular instances such as often done in previous works. To this end, in this paper we first conduct a formal, ontological discussion of the kokuji characters so as to identify common properties and patterns, and second we realise a quantitative analysis thereof according to several criteria. The obtained results clearly exhibit trends, which are subsequently discussed.","PeriodicalId":36639,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Chinese Writing Systems","volume":"88 1","pages":"137 - 145"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76982769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A large number of polymorphous materials and the configuration details of Spring and Autumn characters had emerged by the time of the excavation of the Houma Covenant. These data make us realize that the heteromorphic characters also exist in the same area of a country, and also let us know that some glyphs can help us to periodize the date of the characters. The configuration and style of names in the Spring and Autumn Period, the phenomenon of polymorphic characters in the Houma Covenant, and the characteristics of the chronological structure of the characters of the names of vowers in the Houma Covenant are the centerpiece of this paper based on 10 vowers’ names.","PeriodicalId":36639,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Chinese Writing Systems","volume":"6 1","pages":"159 - 165"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88210029","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of them was written as one rectangle above the other, referring to two words yōng 雝 and lǚ 呂, which reflects the phenomenon of ‘一形多用’ (graphs having multiple uses) in early days of Chinese characters. In addition, two distinct forms of the writings yōng 雝 and yōng 雍 often appeared in Chinese ancient books. Most scholars are confused by the appearance of yōng 雝 and yōng 雍 and think that the two characters can be used interchangeably. By combing the clues of them, however, we found that the character yōng 雝 was mainly used in the Pre-Han dynasty. The mixed-use of characters was caused by the change from yōng 雝 to yōng 雍 in Han dynasty. In this context, we intend to correct some errors in the use of the two characters in ancient books.","PeriodicalId":36639,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Chinese Writing Systems","volume":"19 1","pages":"121 - 127"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88108696","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is likely that the names of the rituals and their script, along with their method of practice, had been passed from the Shang to the Zhou. However, despite sharing the same name, there are differences between the Shang and the Zhou’s rituals. For example, in the Shang period, Liao (燎) is conducted as part of a ritual praying for crops or rain, or for before or after hunting expeditions and patrols. In the Western Zhou period, however, they developed the latter method into a ritual to be performed before and after a conquest. Similarly, Di (禘) is a ritual concerning ancestral spirits and other various divine spirits, which was written as 帝 during the Shang period; during the Western Zhou period, the ritual was written as 啻 and transformed into a ritual concerning descendants of a direct bloodline. This study will discuss the script related to the rituals, Liao (燎) and Di (禘), that were passed down from the Shang to the Zhou and elucidates on the aspects of culture and systems inherited by the Zhou along with what these characters represent.","PeriodicalId":36639,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Chinese Writing Systems","volume":"131 1","pages":"111 - 119"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86352301","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper gives a comprehensive review of five main issues of Chinese reading, which are (1) the relationship across written forms, sounds, and meanings during the neurocognitive processing of Chinese reading, (2) the involvement of structural and linguistic units, such as strokes (笔画), radicles (部件), components (偏旁), whole characters (整字), and words (词), in character reading, (3) the influence of attentional conditions on character reading, (4) the activation of Chinese characters from non-character input, and (5) the influences of readers’ linguistic experiences on character reading. We summarize that the reading of Chinese characters involves dynamic integration of multi-channel information and multiple levels of processing units, which, as compared with alphabetic writing systems, rely more on form-to-meaning semantic processing, while its form-to-phonology non-semantic processing is greatly influenced by para-linguistic context.","PeriodicalId":36639,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Chinese Writing Systems","volume":"112 1","pages":"167 - 183"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80811513","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I argue that all of China’s minority authors engage in Sinoxenic writing (albeit in limited forms) when they write their native languages using Chinese graphs. That is, minority authors in today’s China who write works of “minority literature” in Chinese often do not just write Mandarin Chinese, but also their native languages using borrowed sinographs. This is a literary tradition that, while having identifiable roots in the “old” Sinoxenic scripts of previous centuries, has resulted in “new” forms of syllabic writing comprised entirely of phonetic borrowings.","PeriodicalId":36639,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Chinese Writing Systems","volume":"34 1","pages":"147 - 157"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77546248","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Adopting both a behavioral and an eye-tracking experimental paradigm, the paper explores how language background and the prior learning of Chinese characters affect L1 speakers’ recognition and processing of the OBIs. Our results reveal the following. (1) L1 speakers process distinct oracle structural categories differently. In terms of accuracy, the recognition of the xiangxing and huiyi structures is better than that of the zhishi and xingsheng structures. In terms of eye-movement metrics, the differences in processing converged with the behavioral findings. (2) L1 speakers differ in the processing of oracle characters depending on their structural similarities with the corresponding modern Chinese characters. Furthermore, characters with structural symmetry are easier to recognize, as reflected in their higher accuracy (behavioral task) and shorter duration (eye-tracking task). (3) The recognition and the eye-movement experimental data reveal a significant effect of learning. The current study carries empirical and theoretical implications for understanding the underlying comprehension mechanisms of the OBIs and the application of computer-assisted oracle recognition techniques.","PeriodicalId":36639,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Chinese Writing Systems","volume":"71 1","pages":"211 - 220"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86411011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A qualitative methodology with semi-structured interviews is adopted in the case study. Sixteen beginners learning Chinese as a second language from 12 to 16 years old participated in the study. Results indicate that students are generally keen to learn and memorize characters. The challenge that students face is the large number of characters to be memorized in terms of pronunciation, orthographic forms, and meanings. Learners also express their dilemma of following the correct stroke order when practicing writing. Moreover, reviewing flashcards, writing practice, making use of radicals and orthographic clues, as well as interactive activities, are reported as effective ways of learning by students. It indicates that both memory and cognitive strategies were useful for character learning from learners’ perspectives. The key factor affecting students’ commitment to learning comes from their pleasant learning and instructional experience. Implications are drawn from the results regarding learning and teaching Chinese characters with young learners in secondary schools.","PeriodicalId":36639,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Chinese Writing Systems","volume":"35 1","pages":"3 - 15"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75923856","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results indicate that the most common mistake among elementary, intermediate and advanced learners is wrongly written characters mainly caused by misuse of components, especially confusion between components and miswriting of components. Besides, stroke errors also matter. The reduction and improper location of strokes, in particular, trouble learners a great deal. As to the misused characters, how to differentiate similar characters is where the difficulties lie. On the whole, from the elementary stage to the intermediate stage, both types of errors decrease significantly, while after the intermediate stage, the decrease of wrongly written characters is more significant than that of the misused characters. Moreover, for advanced learners, the frequencies of these errors are basically the same. The study findings demonstrate that it is crucial for CFL learners to rapidly develop their awareness of orthography between the elementary and intermediate stages. This will last roughly 9 months. Advanced learners are usually well aware of orthography, but their awareness development of the form, pronunciation and meaning is not synchronized. They still make mistakes with details when writing. This research is instructive in the teaching of Chinese character handwriting. It points out the problems and countermeasures of online Chinese character handwriting courses during the pandemic and thus contributes advice to online Chinese character teaching during the long-term future.","PeriodicalId":36639,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Chinese Writing Systems","volume":"9 1","pages":"39 - 51"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90202389","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
