A unique 40m-high ovoid\u0000bowl-like shape is covered with mirrors reflecting everything\u0000around, and the facility is to house the Museum’s entire\u0000collection (over 150,000 exhibits). The costs and challenges implied by the\u0000construction of a storage facility located in the city centre,\u0000and in a park, substantially exceeded those of ordinary\u0000facilities of the kind in city outskirts. However, owing to\u0000its bold and fascinating design, the Depot can undeniably\u0000become one of Rotterdam’s architectural icons, turning\u0000into an unquestionable tourist attraction. The task was to collect archival, library, and\u0000museum materials, including militaria. As a result of these\u0000efforts, in 1882, the Mielżynski Museum was established\u0000which boasted an exquisite painting gallery, containing historical\u0000painting, a rich archaeological and military collection,\u0000and a sizeable collection of so-called historical mementoes:\u0000weapons, orders, decorations, etc.\u0000In the aftermath of the Greater Poland Uprising 1918\u0000–1919, the Hindenburg Museum founded in 1916–1918\u0000was transformed into a Military Museum. The ceremonial\u0000opening was held on 27 October 1919 by Józef Piłsudski,\u0000Poland’s Chief of State. The quickly growing collection was\u0000moved from Marcinkowskiego Avenue to the barracks\u0000in Bukowska Street, and subsequently to a new seat at\u00001 Artyleryjska Street in Poznan. The solemn opening of the\u0000Wielkopolska Military Museum was held on 22 April 1923\u0000by the Commander of the 7th Corps District Major-General\u0000Kazimierz Raszewski. In 1939, anticipating the threat of war,\u0000the most precious objects were evacuated eastwards, and\u0000looted there. The items which stayed behind ended up in\u0000German museums. The mementoes connected with the history\u0000of the Polish military were destroyed, and the Museum\u0000was wound up.\u0000The first attempts at reactivating the Museum following\u0000WW II failed. It was only with the 1956 revolt that civil and\u0000military authorities changed their approach, The National\u0000Museum in Poznan undertook the first efforts. The Museum\u0000did not go back to its pre-WW II seat, but found home in\u0000a modern building in the Old Market Square in Poznan, to\u0000be ceremoniously launched on 22 February 1963 by the\u0000Commander of the Operational Air Force in Poznan Brigadier\u0000General Pilot Jan Raczkowski.\u0000Having recreated its collection, the Wielkopolska Military\u0000Museum, already as a Branch of the National Museum in\u0000Poznan, has held many exhibitions and shows. Moreover,\u0000it has released many publications, and run a broad range\u0000of educational activities. Among other projects, it has also\u0000made reference to the pre-WW II Museum. On 27 December\u00002019, a new jubilee exhibition ‘Wielkopolska Military\u0000Museum 1919–2019’ recording the 100-years’ history of the\u0000oldest historical-military museum in Poland was inaugurated.\u0000\u0000

Warsaw 1939–1945 edited by\u0000Prof. Stanisław Lorentz.\u0000The present paper is based on Morawiński’s hand-written\u0000testimony, supported by archival sources and recollections\u0000of his colleagues from the National Museum in Warsaw\u0000(MNW). From August 1939 to August 1944, Jan Morawiński,\u0000together with others, was involved in saving precious museum\u0000exhibits in the Museum building, but also throughout\u0000Warsaw. He was involved in packing the historic monuments\u0000into crates which were to help them survive the toughest\u0000times, and he helped to put out fires at the Museum, risking\u0000his own life.
