All-optical switching nodes based on 1×N wavelength selective switches (WSS's) are widely used in current optical networks. However, the existing architecture of multi-dimensional switching node based on 1×N WSS's is very complicated and costly. In this paper, we propose an N×N WSS architecture to tackle this problem, and address its optical design and application. Furthermore, we propose to introduce sub-wavelength-level all-optical switching technology into a network node or even the whole network, and demonstrate a petabit-scale switching node and a 100-Gb/s optical burst network, respectively.","PeriodicalId":364683,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th International Conference on Optical Communications and Networks (ICOCN)","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131102565","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If the maximum network throughput is required for traffic grooming, the algorithms use the priori method to maximize the network throughput, and then to minimize the energy consumption afterwards. If the maximum network throughput is not required, the minimum energy consumption can be further reduced by blocking more connection requests. Simulation results show that the bi-objective algorithms can save more than five times of average energy consumption by blocking one IP connection request.","PeriodicalId":364683,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th International Conference on Optical Communications and Networks (ICOCN)","volume":"159 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123018979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This new scheme inherits from our already proposed FFS (fuzzy fault set) based restoration mechanism which is a reasonable trade-off between the recovery success rate and the remaining network risk resources. We mainly consider the link faults in the simulation because link is likely to fail. The survival restoration scheme is divided into two phase: restoration phase and re-restoration phase. The re-restoration phase aims at restoring more DLPs (damaged light paths) by rerouting a small number of already established light paths. The proposed re-restoration mechanism can further improve recovery success rate which has been verified by simulations on the energy efficient multi-domain WSON (wavelength switched optical network) test bed.","PeriodicalId":364683,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th International Conference on Optical Communications and Networks (ICOCN)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124618078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we tackle the problem of greening optical networks under scheduled traffic model with good resource used performance in terms of the number of wavelength-links used. We propose a power-aware routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) scheme to allow operators to tune the three factors of link distance, network device power consumption, and the resource used during RWA so that we can power off or sleep the network devices during periods of low utilization. Our simulation results have shown that the proposed algorithm is effective in terms of reducing the power consumption of the network devices, as well as the tradeoff between the power consumption of the network transport and the number of wavelength-links used.","PeriodicalId":364683,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th International Conference on Optical Communications and Networks (ICOCN)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128763904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In IP over WDM optical satellite networks, the traffic demand of single users can be much lower than the capacity of an entire wavelength channel. Thus, efficient traffic grooming approaches that aggregate low-speed connections onto a high-capacity optical channel will significantly improve capacity utilization, reduce network cost and satellite mass. In this study, we apply different traffic grooming algorithms to create a lightpath virtual topology for the upper IP layer. We also investigate routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) algorithms for lightpath establishment in the optical layer. Results show that an algorithm with multi-hop grooming and waveplane-based RWA can not only significantly reduce the number of required wavelengths, but also ensure low end-to-end transmission delays of IP flows.","PeriodicalId":364683,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th International Conference on Optical Communications and Networks (ICOCN)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131594155","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
