The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of progenies sweetpotato obtained from controlled cross system for higher root yield, dry matter and starch content. Field experiment was conducted at the National Root Crops Research Institute, Umudike, Southeast Nigeria during the 2015 and 2016 cropping seasons to evaluate diversity across progenies of three (3) sweetpotato families; SautiX442162 (6), LigriXFaara (17), SautiXBohye (17), including two check varieties (Umuspo3 and TIS 87/0087). This experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. The variables observed included: number of root per plot, the weight of root per plot, dry matter content, root yield and starch content. The analysis of variance showed a significant difference among the tested genotypes in most of traits observed. Root yield ranged from 2.2– 19.33t/ha and starch content ranged from 80.11mg100g-1 to 20.76mg100 -1 . SautiX442162/1 had the highest starch content, 80.11mg100g -1 while SautiXBohye/9 had the lowest starch content, 20.76mg100 -1 . Five promising genotypes; LigriXFaara/2 (14.67t/ha), LigriXFaara/3 (16.02t/ha), SautiXBohye/1 (15.03t/ha), SautiXBohye/2 (19.33t/ha), SautiXBohye/3 (16.00t/ha) recorded high yield above the world’s estimated annual average yield of 13.7t/ha. Six promising genotypes recorded starch content above 50mg100-1; SautiX442162/1 (80.11mg100-1), SautiX442162/3 (77.51mg100 -1 ), SautiX442162/2 (66.14mg100 -1 ), SautiX442162/6 (57.36 mg100 -1 ), SautiX442162/4 (57.19 mg100 -1 ), SautiX442162/5 (55.99 mg100 -1 ). Eleven promising genotypes that recorded high yield and starch could be subjected to multi-location trail and incorporated into further breeding program.","PeriodicalId":364314,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Agriculture, Environment and Bioresearch","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121038427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This fact implies the urgency of banning the use of AGPs in poultry farms and the obligation to substitute them with alternatives that can match their effects in terms of growth performance but also can improve intestinal health such as Zinc. In fact, Zinc in organic or inorganic form has multiple effects, like improving growth parameters in broilers and production in layers and breeders, stimulating the immune system and maintaining the balance of the intestinal microbiota. Zinc is thus a broad-spectrum substitute for AGPs in poultry and its potential should be further explored.","PeriodicalId":364314,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Agriculture, Environment and Bioresearch","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125078750","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Millions of people still rely on marine fisheries for livelihood and food even up to this date. However, due to the high demand, many fishers used illegal methods to catch faster. In northeastern Cagayan, data from the PNP Maritime Unit at Sta. Ana in Cagayan revealed that in 2021, there are 244 cases of fishery violations committed. This study assessed the level of knowledge and compliance of the fishermen with the fishery laws among the coastal communities in Cagayan, Philippines and determines whether there is a relationship between knowledge and compliance. The study uses the descriptive and correlation research design. Findings indicate that the respondents are “much knowledgeable” with the “Fishery Law particularly on unauthorized fishing, fishing with the use of explosives, electricity and poisonous substances, aquatic pollution, mangrove protection and other fishing related violations and the respondents are compliant with it. Finally, the findings also indicate that the knowledge of the respondents with the provisions of the fishery laws is positively related to their compliance. Hence, it is concluded that the knowledge of the fishermen with the fishery laws is critical in insuring the protection of the maritime and coastal resources.","PeriodicalId":364314,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Agriculture, Environment and Bioresearch","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123277047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of certified sunflower seeds has increased production of sunflower oil among the producers for local and export market. This work aimed at investigating the socio-economic determinants affecting sunflower seed production in Singida region of Tanzania. The cross-section research design with a sample size of 140 respondents was used to obtain information regarding determinants of sunflower seed production in the study area. The findings of the study shows that, the level of technology used by seed producers and suppliers, the use of skilled labor in the factories , the market deman, disasters and diseases were the key factors having a direct effect on sunflower seed production. The extent of seed production was measured based on tons of seeds produced in the years 2016 to 2020, and the study also found that sunflower seed production was low compared to the market demand at the same period. The study concluded that the rate of sunflower seed production and supply in the market can be increased by upgrading the technology used in sunflower seed value chain in Tanzania.","PeriodicalId":364314,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Agriculture, Environment and Bioresearch","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114883675","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The species and their races were identified using morphological characters, the North Carolina differential host test, and SCAR based PCR assay. Cytogenetical preparations for the study of gametogenesis and chromosome numbers were made using propionic-orcein dye for chromosome staining and Giemsa stain for result comparison. Results indicated that the populations of M. incognita race 1, M. incognita race 2, and M. javanica were considered hypotriploid with an average of 45.2, 46.1 and 46.7 chromosomes, respectively. The M. arenaria populations, however, were considered triploid with an average of 52.2 chromosomes. The chromosomal numbers suggested that the mode of reproduction for the three species was mitotic parthenogenesis.","PeriodicalId":364314,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Agriculture, Environment and Bioresearch","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115243686","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was underpinned by four main objectives: rationale for Ghana’s ratification and obligations inherent in the Voluntary Partnership Agreement VPA; the institutional structures for implementing the VPA in Ghana; VPA enforcement and forest sector trade; and constraints in the VPA enforcement process. The policy arrangement approach and complexity of joint actions provided the theoretical framework for the study. The qualitative approach within the interpretivist research paradigm was employed for the study. Essentially, the VPA was ratified as a way of speeding up good governance process in the forestry sector of Ghana, promoting sustainable management of forest resources, enhancing and sustain the trade relationship with the EU. Meeting the requirements of the VPA has led to the institutionalization of relevant structures and mechanisms within and beyond the Forestry Commission including the use of technology-enhanced tracking and independent monitor for counter verifications which helps in detection of illegal wood harvesting. The VPA together with the established enforcement structures has had far reaching positive implications on the forest sector which are discussed in the study. The study, however, observed some challenges which affect the full realization of the expected benefits associated with the VPA. The study concludes that a policy even if originates from external source is more likely to be embraced if it does not challenge but feeds into government’s prevalent activities, the legitimacy of that agreement/policy and enforcement remains higher. Secondly, the VPA is an external mechanism which has been localized and infused with ongoing projects to provide novel and innovative mechanisms for supporting Ghana’s desires and quest to manage forests better, improve peoples’ livelihoods, and protect natural resources. The study makes recommendations which includes the use of stakeholder consultations and workshops to help to address inter-agency coordination problem which will help optimize the enforcement of the VPA.","PeriodicalId":364314,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Agriculture, Environment and Bioresearch","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116198657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To increase lettuce yields, farmers generally use excessive synthetic NPK fertilizers. This has resulted in serious pollution and land degradation. As an effort to restore soil fertility conditions that are environmentally friendly is through the application of biological fertilizers. Biofertilizer inoculation that potentially used is a form of consortium, which consists of the N-fixing group, namely Azotobacter spp and phosphate solubilizing bacteria (Pseudomonas sp.). The characteristics of the consortium inoculant that need to be investigated are its viability and effectiveness when applied in the field to lettuce cultivation. The experimental data analysis was carried out based on the linear model of the Randomized Block Design (RBD), consisting of seven treatments, namely: control; NPK 100% recommended dosage; consortium 10 l / h + 100% NPK; consortium 10 l / h + 75% NPK; ; consortium 10 l / h + 50% NPK; consortium 10 l / h + 25% NPK. The results showed that consortium inoculation of 10 l / h + 50% NPK could increase the population of Azotobacter spp. and the yield of fresh lettuce increased by 49.24%. Meanwhile, in the application of the consortium inoculation of 10 l / h + 25% NPK, tend increasing N absorption value. The consortium inoculant can reduce the NPK requirement by 50% followed by a higher fresh weight yield of lettuce compared to use 100% NPK, by using conventional method.","PeriodicalId":364314,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Agriculture, Environment and Bioresearch","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116454062","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This method can be used for the identification of hydrological features and properties of basin. The topographic map of the study area was scanned and geo-referenced before it was exported into ArcGIS 10.0 software. The digitized map was edited, and saved as line coverage in ArcGIS Software. This paper aimed at applying GIS and RS for the development of drainage system for LAUTECH, Ogbomoso in order to prevent or reduce the persistent occurrence of flood. Geographical Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) techniques were used to analyse the hydrological drainage basins of the study area. Google Earth and LANDSAT 7 sensor of 2019 ETM+, path 191 and row 55 of VHS were used to acquire the satellite imageries of the study area. Using high resolution imageries, a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) was developed with Surfer 8 and ArcGIS 10.0. The drainage, watershed, flow direction, flow length and flow accumulation maps of the study area were generated by using the Digital Elevation Model. Result obtained indicated that studied basins exhibits high, medium and low spatial variations in their hydrological properties. The results revealed that the used of remotely sensed data and ArcGIS 10.0 software provide an effective approach to develop accurate drainage pattern with a minimum amount of time, effort, and cost. This approach creates easily read and accessible techniques that facilitate the identification and development of drainage pattern of the study area. This study would help the people to utilize the resources for sustainable development of the basin area.","PeriodicalId":364314,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Agriculture, Environment and Bioresearch","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122902957","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lombok is an island in central Indonesia that has low soil fertility and a limited amount of available water. Beneficial microorganisms can be used as a low-cost and environmental friendly tool to increase productivity in dryland agriculture systems. Screening to obtain superior rhizosphere bacteria is one of the options to support the nutrient supply in arid soils. Composites soil samples were taken from five ecosystems in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, an arid region in the eastern part of Indonesia to obtain the isolates of nitrogen-fixer rhizobacteria (NFR). Nine Azotobacter and Azopirillium spp were isolated from, rainfed, maize, mixed crop, natural forests, and savanna ecosystems. Abundance of total bacteria and N2-fixers in all ecosystems was relatively high (more than 108 cfu g-1), and the highest total population was recorded in the natural forest. The abundance of N2-fixer rhizobacteria recorded the highest Azotobacter population at 2.64 x 108 cfu g-1 in the maize ecosystem and the highest Azospirillum population at 2.32 x 108 cfu g-1 in the natural forest ecosystem. Additionally, the highest contain of organic C and total nitrogen were obtained in natural forest and savanna ecosystem. Eighteen isolates were obtained and characterized microscopic and macroscopically, consisted of nine Azotobacter sp and nine Azospirillium isolates which are potentially to be used as biogent for improving the growth of upland rice on dry climate zone.","PeriodicalId":364314,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Agriculture, Environment and Bioresearch","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114420818","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
