The electrolysis process causes electrochemical wear of the anodes such that they have to be replaced after a certain time. Due to very diverse conditions at different electrolysis plants, the lifetime of those anodes varies from 1 to 7 years. The superordinate target of the research work is to analyze the reliability of the anodes. The lifetime of the anodes can be determined experimentally by analyzing their corrosion rate under certain process conditions. The experimental effort can be reduced by developing a model to simulate the corrosion of the anodes considering different process conditions.","PeriodicalId":360096,"journal":{"name":"2020 Annual Reliability and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS)","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121552475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, production environment is subject to many sources of uncertainty including machine unavailability periods, which may have a major impact on the production plan. Often times, a production line is interrupted due to periodic repair and preventive maintenance. In addition, machines may become unavailable due to unexpected failures. In many industrial settings unexpected machine failures can be potentially costly as a result of its consequences in terms of machine down times, product quality and client satisfaction. In this context, decision makers may want to jointly optimize the order of the jobs on the machine as well as the maintenance operations considering failures in a production environment such that the total expected makespan is minimized.In this paper, we deal with an integrated optimization model for production scheduling and inspection of a single machine. The failure process of the machine follows a two-stage Delay Time Model (DTM), i.e. it starts with an initial defect, which leads to eventual failure if the defect is left unattended. Once a job is interrupted due to failure on the machine, it must be restarted from the beginning when the machine becomes available. To reduce the risk of machine’s breakdown during processing of the jobs, an inspection can be performed prior to start of any job on the machine which exposes down time to the system. We consider the possibility of either minimal repair or replacement of the machine depending on its age at inspection time. We develop a recursive formula to jointly find the optimal inspection policy and production schedule which minimizes the total expected makespan. The problem defined in this paper might be applicable in many industrial and management contexts. Especially when some objective functions such as makespan is of greater importance for the decision makers. We present the application of our proposed model by use of data from a production line consisting of a multiple spindles boring machines which are able to process a number of jobs. We implement a branch and bound algorithm to optimize the model and then evaluate the efficiency of the branch and bound algorithm. The results of the study indicate the optimal solution depends on the input parameters of the model, most specifically, the down time parameters and the distributions of defect arrival and delay time.","PeriodicalId":360096,"journal":{"name":"2020 Annual Reliability and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS)","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121737253","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One such type of noise of interest in this paper is phase noise, which we model and describe its significance in thermodynamic degradation science. Phase noise of an oscillator is perhaps one of the most important oscillator parameters and the source of the noise is not well understood. Phase noise is important as it degrades the purity of the carrier frequency when used in transmission which is only one of the many applications in oscillator usage. It is known that the unloaded Q in phase noise goes as the inverse of Q to the forth power observed in the low frequency area (i.e. near the carrier frequency) as noted in oscillator power noise spectral density. In this paper we provide a model that leads to this observed unloaded Q dependence noted in the power spectral density. We then provide specific comparison to an LRC oscillator circuit to establish a parametric useful analogy. A second model links Q to entropy which we show produces this type of noise. Although this noise’s origin is not well understood in terms of reliability, we have previously found that noise is typically attributed to entropy (disorder). This is because temporal coherence of a signal from an operating device can be correlated to disorder in the spatial coherence in the device. Once understood, the phase noise has an entropy explanation that yields the inverse frequency dependence observed. Therefore, this type of noise measurement is of importance in thermodynamic degradation process as it has applications to understanding noise in other areas besides oscillators. Results show consistency with damage entropy principles in terms of purity of materials and measurement methods observed in the literature. Because entropy is an expression of the disorder, or randomness of a system, we anticipate that such results can be applied in assessing stability issues in many fabricated electronic devices.","PeriodicalId":360096,"journal":{"name":"2020 Annual Reliability and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129745314","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We classify the failure modes into soft failures and hard failures (possibly dependent). Soft failures are defined as occurring when a degradation process under condition monitoring surpasses a predefined threshold while hard failures are spontaneous failures that cannot be monitored. To optimize the system performance, different levels of maintenance actions on multiple components are considered. In particular, imperfect maintenance actions reduce the effective age and degradation level of a component while increasing the component’s frailty. We solve the optimization problem using standard Differential Evolution (DE) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) heuristics. A numerical example shows that the proposed selective maintenance framework provides an effective tool for making the optimal maintenance decisions by considering hard failures and the correlation among degradation processes.","PeriodicalId":360096,"journal":{"name":"2020 Annual Reliability and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS)","volume":"6 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114119276","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since bridges are vulnerable components in the road-bridge transportation system, the recovery of a road-bridge network highly depends on the recovery of bridges after the disaster. The bridge, which can improve the performance of the roadbridge network highly and quickly, should be restored as soon as possible for controlling the economic loss caused by disasters. Therefore, the recovery optimization of post-disaster bridges is considered to enhance the restoration ability and control the economic loss simultaneously for the road-bridge network.In this paper, the skew of recovery trajectory (SRT) is introduced to evaluate the restoration ability, and the economic loss is extended to consider the indirect loss. The SRT is the restoration ability based on system resilience, which is related to the reliability, redundancy, and the importance level of bridges. Considering the restoration ability and economic loss, we proposed a multi-objective recovery optimization model for the road-bridge network to obtain the optimal recovery scheme of damaged bridges. This model is solved through the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II). The influence of the number of simultaneous construction teams on the recovery scheme is analyzed, and the composition of economic loss with different SRT and the number of construction teams is with the intent to support engineer’s decision-making capability. The results show that the decision-makers should first consider incorporating more construction teams and then determine the SRT according to the requirements of the recovery time.","PeriodicalId":360096,"journal":{"name":"2020 Annual Reliability and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS)","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121480524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This degradation can be understood as a functional response of velocity change over time, with time in this case represented by round-count on the barrel. Statistically modeling this type of functional response poses some additional challenges when compared to traditional one-dimensional data, and Functional Data Analysis (FDA) can help address this added complexity. Although FDA is not a new technique, its application to gun barrel degradation had never been employed before by the Department of Defense (DoD) until now.","PeriodicalId":360096,"journal":{"name":"2020 Annual Reliability and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS)","volume":"110 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116340828","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
