There are not much studies have done in Pakistani context, in order to investigate the attitudes of EFL learners towards accent of Pakistani English and Standard English. University of Sindh was selected as site of the study. Quantitative research method was used for this study and the close ended questionnaire was adopted from Parveen and Mehmood (2013) was used as a tool of the study. The random selection of the participants was done. They participants were 200 in number and they were the students of Institute of English Language and Literature, University of Sindh, Jamshoro. The data was collected online through google form. The data was analyzed using statistical methods. SPSS version 22 was employed to carry out the statistical operations. Quantitative data was analyzed through SPSS to draw mean, median mode and percentages for each item in the questionnaire. It was found that EFL learners’ attitude towards the accent of Standard English and Pakistani English was positive. If one is acquiring a standard accent of English as an additional ingredient to one's linguistic knowledge that would be okay in multiple concerns. On the other hand if it is being given exaggerated significance and is learned discriminatively, that would be matter of great debate around the globe to cease language crisis.","PeriodicalId":355193,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Literature, Languages and Linguistics","volume":"175 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124318053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Particularly, subcontinent, being the part of Indus Civilization, successfully maintained the legacy of religious and cultural diversity. Pre-colonial lingo-cultural diversity in subcontinent was discouraged and displaced by new linguistic hierarchy during colonial times. In the milieu of WW-II and national liberation movements throughout the world, classical colonial structure was largely weakened at global level and paved the way for internal colonialism. Political leadership of newly formed multiethnic states principally preferred to govern their people as colonial subjects rather than free citizens. European model of ‘one language, one culture and one state’ has hitherto resulted in many ethno-linguistic movements in different neo-colonial states. Neo-colonial forms of knowledge, categories and instruments of oppression; particularly language policy; is still prevailing in such (in)dependent states where Pakistan is not an exception. Since 1947, language policy in Pakistan has been mainly shaped by and still continues to be overshadowed by its colonial past. This article critically investigates promise(s) and practice(s) of national language policy and the status of linguistic human rights of minorities in education in Lyari, Karachi, Pakistan. The data was collected from various (inter)national public policy documents/declarations along with semi-structured interviews from four different groups of participants i.e. academics, cultural activists, teachers and parents. Findings reveal two diametrically opposed orientations in terms of the use of mother tongue in classroom. School teachers stridently advocated assimilationist language ideology and viewed multilingualism in classroom as a problem to be solved, whereas, cultural activists and academics consider the same as a cultural resource to be properly utilized and the right of the child to be respected. Parents’ views are also considered in order to explore the tension between the language of schooling and the language of early socialization of children at home. Moreover, Language Rights model is applied in order to explore (re)production of linguistic injustice through language policy in education. societies that developed on their territories, consider themselves distinct from other sectors of the societies now prevailing in those territories, or parts of them. They form at present non-dominant sectors of society and are determined to preserve, develop, and transmit to future generations their ancestral territories and their ethnic identity, as the basis of their continued existence as peoples, in accordance with their own cultural patterns, social institutions, and legal systems’ (James et al., 2015, p.40).","PeriodicalId":355193,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Literature, Languages and Linguistics","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115835007","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was a case study and ten international undergraduate students were treated as ten different cases. Semi-structured interviews were conducted from each of them. The transcribed interviews were then analyzed thematically. The findings suggested that the foreign students in MUET, Jamshoro faced both academic and adaptation challenges. These included, English language problems in terms of their inability to understand lectures if English is not the medium of instruction, difficulty surviving in the new environment due to uncommon language between them and the locals, all of which lead to identity shift and social stigma. So, teachers should make sure they cater to the needs of both national and international students. Once, the issue of medium of instruction will be sorted, the students’ learning experience will be remarkable. They will have time to focus on their studies, after that they will gradually learn Urdu which will help them survive and adjust in their new social and academic environment. These students have to invest in learning a new language, improving English, and adapting to the host environment by all means.","PeriodicalId":355193,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Literature, Languages and Linguistics","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132315458","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Concerning the issue of globalization and the spread of communications in all areas, it seems that the need for an international language is felt more than ever. In this regard, the science domain has not been an exception and has entered the course of globalization concurrent with the world. The current case study conducted on 20 students of Anthropology studying at the University of Tehran, investigates two main problems. First, students’ degree of satisfaction with the education presented by schools and universities, and their opinion about the English courses in Iran. In this article, we tried to capsulate their true ideas and suggestions for improving the teaching system of the English language in schools and universities according to their experiences. Second, we examined their feedback on the criticisms and disagreements against language expansion, such as linguistic imperialism and subtractive bilingualism.","PeriodicalId":355193,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Literature, Languages and Linguistics","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126589935","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nandelenga","doi":"10.7176/jlll/82-04","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.7176/jlll/82-04","url":null,"abstract":"In a number of languages, vowel harmony is generally initiated in certain positions that are psycholinguistically privileged such as root-initial syllables. Such positions not only trigger vowel harmony but may also block or fail to undergo vowel harmony process initiated elsewhere even when such a process is regular or expected in the phonology of the language. In the rule-based derivational analysis, such phenomenon was explained in serial rules that were often blind to outputs and could produce non-recurrent harmony types. Similarly, the derivational approach often failed to account for the privileged status of harmony triggering vowels. In a Positional Faithfulness (PF) account adopted in this study, it is argued that positional sensitive harmony is due to a high-ranked positional faithfulness constraint; IDENT-IO, (F) in an Optimality Theoretic Grammar. In this paper, based on Lubukusu (a Bantu language of Kenya), it is shown that vowel height harmony that is initiated in the root initial syllable can best be accounted for by recourse to constraint interaction in which positional specific faithfulness constraints dominates general faithfulness and markedness constraints. Vowels in root initial syllables may initiate or block vowel height harmony based on a universal constraint ranking for root-initial faithfulness. The analysis confirms that faithfulness constraints that are positional sensitive may be responsible for root induced vowel height harmony because such positions are psycholinguistically privileged in general language processing.","PeriodicalId":355193,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Literature, Languages and Linguistics","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129042352","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, in English language teaching through literature at secondary school cultural values and/or impacts of culture should be clearly stated by the language teachers to their students since the cultural issues retain a direct relationship to determine the meaning of words uttered and written by speakers of the language. Literature properly exposes students to complex themes and afresh, unexpected uses of standard language. A good novel or short story can gently take the students to foreign countries and fantastic worlds. A play or a poem can bring up certain dilemmas and dynamic emotional responses. This paper analyses literary texts incorporated in students’ textbook, incorporate researcher teaching English language experience and look out the curriculum objectives for the grade level. In the Ethiopian context, intercultural understanding has got little attention; communicative competence and linguistic competency gain relatively prioritized. If institutions and concerned bodies are looking for better learners who are well skilled with the target language; they have to properly incorporate contents which focus on enhancing trainees’ awareness and use suitable language teaching methods for better implementation.","PeriodicalId":355193,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Literature, Languages and Linguistics","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133991796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
