Based on two self-constructed corpora, this study examined the use of rhetorical move structure and stance markers in dissertation abstracts by international students in China and native Chinese speakers through a comparative analysis. The results show that the majority of dissertation abstracts by international students in China contain three essential moves (M1, M2, M3), while the majority of native Chinese speakers' abstracts included four essential moves (M1, M2, M3, M4). International students in China spend more space on \"Background\" Move while native Chinese speakers focus more on \"Results\" Move. Overall, the distribution of stance markers between the two corpora is quite similar, with hedges, self-mentions, boosters, and attitude markers appearing in descending order. However, the preference in the usage of stance markers varies from move to move in this study based on the different functions of each move. {"title":"Definite and Indefinite Article Misuse Among Saudi Students Learning English as a Second Language","authors":"Hussein Bakri","doi":"10.11648/j.ijll.20231102.12","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11648/j.ijll.20231102.12","url":null,"abstract":": This study was designed to observe and demonstrate common errors with regard to definite and indefinite English articles made by language learners. An in-depth quantitative analysis was then conducted to discover the causes behind the errors, and recommendation for improvement was suggested. For the purpose of the study, thirty (30) Saudi ESL students were randomly selected to test their awareness of definite and indefinite English articles. They were given the task to translate 28 simple Arabic sentences to English and were allowed thirty minutes to complete the job. Following an analysis of responses, it was revealed that while many errors were made by students when using articles, the misuse of the definite article \"the\" was the most frequent error, followed by the omission of the indefinite article \"a\". However, the omission of the indefinite article \"an\" was the least common error. The facts and figures also showed that along with Arabic interference, the misuse of a particular rule of English grammar, the target language, was also a major source of errors. Results exhibited that 87% of the errors were interlingual, illustrating the influence of the native language. In contrast, intralingual errors indicated 12.5% of article errors. {"title":"Literary Resonances in Clara Nunes´ Song - Macunaima, Rhapsody, Mario De Andrade","authors":"Beatriz Helena Ramos Amaral","doi":"10.11648/j.ijll.20231102.11","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11648/j.ijll.20231102.11","url":null,"abstract":": The article aims to check the intersection of the musical, verbal, visual and body languages which are present in the art of Brazilian interpreter, research and composer Cara Nunes (1942-1983), focusing works recorded by her over the 70s, when the interpreter dedicates herself completely to the authentic Brazilian music, the folklore, affirmation of the African religious matrix and defense of equality and liberty. One of Clara Nunes’songs recorded by her in 1975 permits an dialogue with Brazilian Culture, mainly with Literature and the work of writer, professor and musicologist Mário de Andrade (1893-1945): Macunaíma, a samba composed by David Corrêa and Norival Reis, an inter-semiotic translation of the rhapsody romance of the modernist writer. One can visualize a bridge connecting the targeas and ideas of the two Brazilian artists, supported by strong links of similarities, including appreciating of “roof culture”. Clara Nunes developed a vast project including musical, visual and body interaction. Her clothing were specificallly designed according to the popular culture, composed of white dresses, generally laced material and typical acessories full of religious symbolism. Her singing altered in some respects, setting aside the imposture that characterizes the romantic or lirics interpretations, with reductions of the vibrato, maintaining its power and beauty. And the interpreter created her body language, which were developed during five years course of African dance with Mercedes Batista, the ballerina, teacher and choreographer of Rio de Janeiro Municipal Theatre, creator of Afro-Brazilian Ballet. {"title":"Semantic Analysis of «False- Friends»: A Case Study of English and Siin Seereer","authors":"Jean Christophe Faye","doi":"10.11648/j.ijll.20231101.13","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11648/j.ijll.20231101.13","url":null,"abstract":": The article is devoted to the semantic analysis of words called “False-Friends” in English and Siin Seereer. “False-Friends” are words belonging to two different languages and which have a great similarity in form between them or are written in the same, but whose meanings are different. In other words, a word is considered “False-Friend” when it is close in its writing or pronunciation to a term of another language but whose meaning is different. Thus, the study focuses on some words that belong both to English and Siin Seereer languages and whose meanings are different. English and Seereer are two different languages which do not belong to the same language family. English belongs to the Indo European language family, whereas Seereer is part of the West Atlantic branch of the Niger-Congo family. However, there are several identical words (in terms of writing) in these two languages and whose meanings may cause lots of difficulties to Seereer native speakers who learn English and to English native speakers who learn Seereer language. Furthermore, the study and/or analysis of these “False-Friends” arouse several questions some of which: Why do these two languages share these common words? Do these words have certain meanings in common? Do they belong to the same grammatical categories? Are they structured in the same way in both languages? Do these “False-Friends” have the same pronunciation in English and Seereer? What are their linguistic similarities and differences? To find answers to these questions, we will strive to explore the writings of some Seereer students. Field surveys as well as interviews of native speakers will also be organized and analyzed in this study. In addition, we will read documents (books, articles, novels, stories, etc.) written in English and in Siin Seereer. This research will help us have a lot of information and collect data for the corpus. The VLSs questionnaire was conducted and the sampling in this study was 71 English major students with higher and lower educational levels in a Chinese university. The study discovered that the determination and cognitive strategies were frequently employed by students. They most frequently used written and visual repetition, rehearsed on words’ spellings and sounds, had meaning-oriented note-taking, memorised the fixed phrases and sentences, used bilingual dictionaries, guessed words’ meanings and understood words through Chinese equivalents. Students also learned to tell themselves to feel less stressed when learning vocabulary. Students mainly focused on getting words’ meanings and the mechanical strategies they used were associated with understanding. By contrast, social/affective and metacognitive strategies were the least frequently used. Also, memory strategies such as words’ grammatical forms and word association, were less often employed. Students with a higher educational level more often associated words and noticed their vocabulary learning progresses. Therefore, learning maturity had impact on students’ choices of VLSs. In these cases, it is suggested that students use more types of VLSs such as memory and metacognitive strategies. English teachers are suggested to have strategy instructions and guide students to learn vocabulary through group discussions in classes. However, the sex differences in emotional processing are more evident and consistent. In this paper, some studies on sex differences in specific emotional area: emotional processing in language, empathy and pragmatic aspect of language, and humor processing are reviewed. These results demonstrate that women engage more emotion-related brain areas than men and the results are in consistent with sex-related cognitive style strategy hypothesis, that is, men and women favor different cognitive strategies during emotional processing. Based on the findings, sex-related cognitive strategies hypothesis and extreme male brain hypothesis are discussed. Men and women favor different cognitive strategies during emotional processing, and women show more sensitivity to emotion processing in language. Although biology may play a role to affect sex differences, the most important factor might be the different cognitive strategies employed by men and women influenced by sex hormones. The favor of different cognitive styles encourages women to have stronger drive to empathize and play the key role in sex-related differences in emotional processing in language, empathy and pragmatic reasoning, and humor processing.
