Mental ill-health is one of the most disturbing and disabling disorders of life. It affects not only the concerned person but also the family and the society as a whole with social stigma attached to it. The problem is steadily on the rise due to factors such as urbanization, industrialization and increase in lifespan, together with breakup of the joint family system, with implication of multiple genes has augmented the psychiatric disorders. The prevalence of psychiatric illness is almost same globally, about 8 to 10 per 1000 population. Unani an age old traditional system of medicine has described this disorder in its classical text not only the concept but also its management with various modes of treatment which if pursued will mitigate the suffering humanity to a great extent. The present review manuscript is an attempt to highlight the available literature from the Unani perspective.","PeriodicalId":351803,"journal":{"name":"medical journal of islamic world academy of sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115797799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Frequent translocation variants result in fusion between intron-5 of TEL and intron-2 of AML-1 (2). The t(12:21) results in the chimeric fusion gene TEL–AML-1. The basis of this selectivity is an important unresolved issue (3), but most likely reflects a selective impact of the chimeric protein on the proliferation and/or survival of B-cell precursor (4). Although the mechanism of leukemogenesis induced by TEL–AML-1 remains obscure, recent data have demonstrated the importance of both TEL and AML-1 for normal hematopoiesis, thus suggesting that the presence of TEL–AML-1 fusion protein leads to disordered hematopoietic development as a critical component (5). Shahriar Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, University of Rajshahi, Rajshahi-6205, Bangladesh. e-mail: shahan.acrubd@yahoo.com ABSTRACT The anticancer activities of vanillin thiosemicarbazone complexes with Co(II) and Ni(II) have been studied against Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) cells in Swiss albino mice. Both the complexes were administrated into the intraperitoneal cavity of the EAC-inoculated mice at two doses (5 and 7.5 mg/kg i.p.). The anticancer activities were studied by monitoring the parameters such as cell growth inhibition, tumor weight measurement, survival time of EAC-bearing mice, as well as the changes in depleted hematological parameters due to tumorigenesis. All data were compared with those of a known standard drug bleomycin at the dose of 0.3 mg/kg (i.p.). It has been found that these complexes significantly increased the life span of tumor-bearing mice and decreased the rate of growth and weight of tumor cells. They also restored modestly the depleted hematological parameters such as hemoglobin content, RBC count, and WBC count to normal. They enhanced the number of macrophages in normal mice with minor host toxicity. It is concluded that these compounds can be primarily considered as potent anticancer agents.","PeriodicalId":351803,"journal":{"name":"medical journal of islamic world academy of sciences","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133342165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yenidünya Uludağ Üniversitesi, Tıp Fakültesi, Plastik Rekonstrüktif ve Estetik Cerrahi Bölümü, Görükle, Bursa, Turkiye. e-mail: meogye@hotmail.com INTRODUCTION The primary cells in adipose tissues are lipocytes, and benign tumors arising from them are called lipomas. It is generally thought that surgical removal of lipomas is easier than that of any other soft tissue tumors. This cannot be denied for the lipomas located just under the skin. Even just by doing a simple skin incision, they can be removed as if it is the delivery of an egg without requiring any surgical dissection. But it is certainly not the case for the lipomas located in the submuscular plane. At least for the surgeon who is not aware of the term submuscular lipoma, the operation would become a nightmare because when the operation is started by expecting to find it just under the skin and, it is not found there, it leads to a struggle. This is why it is important to have the knowledge of the term submuscular lipoma and its existence. However, certain lipomatosis cases differ from simple lipomas owing to their existence in many areas in the body. Some lipodystropic syndromes have also been reported. All diseases under this category are basically the lipomas; yet, their treatment may not be as easy as their name implies.","PeriodicalId":351803,"journal":{"name":"medical journal of islamic world academy of sciences","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128830877","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
