Tötösy de Zepetnek argues that comparative literature as a discipline is experiencing a revival in some parts of the world outside of Europe and Anglophone scholarship and that this suggests a corrective measure regarding the historical Euro-US-American hegemony of the discipline. Tötösy de Zepetnek’s principal argument is that the comparative and contextual approach practiced in interdisciplinarity, employing new media technology, and following tenets of comparative cultural studies could achieve the social relevance of the humanities today.","PeriodicalId":34832,"journal":{"name":"Comparative Literature East West","volume":"78 1","pages":"176 - 203"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2017-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79816344","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several of Faulkner’s novels have yet to be translated into Mandarin Chinese, so Moore offers a recommended sequence for future translations. Moore argues that on the whole, critical trends in Faulkner Studies in China have closely mirrored that of the West, though some variation is readily apparent, such as the early translation of Go Down, Moses, and the subsequent amount of eco-criticism devoted to this novel on the part of Chinese literary critics. Furthermore, contrary to what a Western scholar might expect, Marxist ideology has exerted scant influence in the critical reception of Faulkner’s works in China.","PeriodicalId":34832,"journal":{"name":"Comparative Literature East West","volume":"43 1","pages":"216 - 227"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2017-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77204557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the 1970s, the “Chin-Kingston debate” on “the real and the fake” representation of Chinese has aroused heated discussion among scholars and Chinese American writers. This article aims at pinpointing the similarities and differences between both writers in their literary representation of Chinese and “Chinese America” in the contemporary American literature. Besides the shared writing techniques between the two writers, they differ greatly in their dealing with the gender knots, Chinese American experience in the U.S. and their respective attitudes that lurking behind their words. Hence, in the light of this perspective, we can better grasp the “typical American” writing strategy of Gish Jen and the typical recourse to Chinese elements in the “Joy Luck Club” stories by Amy Tan, which will shed light on later Chinese American writing.","PeriodicalId":34832,"journal":{"name":"Comparative Literature East West","volume":"80 1","pages":"114 - 124"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2017-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84837543","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the one hand, the champions of a content-oriented understanding of beauty as the sensory manifestation of the idea (the followers of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel) and, on the other hand, the formalists (inspired by Johann Friedrich Herbart) who conceived of beauty as a purely relational category devoid of any content. This article focuses on the robust development of the formal school at Prague University after 1850 exemplified by the theories of Robert Zimmermann (1824–1898), Josef Durdík (1837–1902), and Otakar Hostinský (1847–1910). It concludes with posing the question whether the structuralist aesthetics advanced in mid-1930s by the Prague Linguistic Circle was not, in fact, an echo of the indigenous Herbartian formalism.","PeriodicalId":34832,"journal":{"name":"Comparative Literature East West","volume":"188 1","pages":"40 - 50"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2017-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80697042","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Their emphases differ, Bauman focussing on the dark side from the Holocaust through to the uncertainty of liquid modernity, Heller on the bright side of modernity with a detour via the analysis of Soviet type societies. Bauman, in effect, draws attention to the limits of modernity, Heller to its possibilities. Read together, these arguments usefully throw light on existing debates concerning modernity, the postmodern and the constraints and opportunities of modern culture .","PeriodicalId":34832,"journal":{"name":"Comparative Literature East West","volume":"72 1","pages":"51 - 60"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2017-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86095406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This conception is inspired by the Morrisian hypothesis about the pragmatical dimension of semiosis. In this light, I discuss the paradigm shift at two levels, the formal level of visuality and the conceptual level of ideology. Accordingly, I observe that the paradigm shift decisively redirected the course of the mainstream in Chinese landscape painting from being external sensitive to more internal sensitive, and thus a new paradigm has been set up in Southern Song.","PeriodicalId":34832,"journal":{"name":"Comparative Literature East West","volume":"88 1","pages":"113 - 96"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2017-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78974921","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The entanglement of art in sociopolitical contexts (“politicization of art”) is discussed from the institutional perspective (development of Marxist thought in Poland after 1945) and within the domain of social activity – the structure of the ordinary (realization of aesthetic postulates of Marxism). The main objective is thus to analyze the effect of Marxism on the twentieth-century aesthetics in Poland with a special emphasis on the postwar period (after 1945), when the basic patterns of that school of thinking took shape. The main focus is on the approach to the Marxist concept found in the theory of Polish Socialist realism. The analysis also involves reflections on the reduction of Marxism to the ideology of Socialist realism and the ideology of art which is associated with it.","PeriodicalId":34832,"journal":{"name":"Comparative Literature East West","volume":"37 1","pages":"61 - 73"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2017-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75499107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this book, Bloom explores how strong poets, through misreading, conquer the influence of anxiety from the precursors so as to achieve their uniqueness; Paul de Man discusses how the rhetoric of language governed by trope subverts its fulfillment of a unified meaning; Derrida discusses the problems of the boundary of text, describing the way the text overruns the limits assigned to it. In this way, he redefines the text and extends the boundary of the text; Hartman mainly focuses on the reading experience. He advocates that the writer is also a reader and we should not only talk of reader intrinsically but also historically; Miller’s essay is on the parasitical relationship between deconstructionist reading and “obvious” reading, nihilism and metaphysics, as well as poem and earlier poems. Those critics have their different views on deconstruction and literary criticism; they, however, share some common ideas on the issues of text interpretation, intertextuality as well as the boundary of text.","PeriodicalId":34832,"journal":{"name":"Comparative Literature East West","volume":"64 1","pages":"134 - 139"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2017-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72800757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
