Kidd","doi":"10.22264/clio.issn2525-5649.2019.37.2.07","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.22264/clio.issn2525-5649.2019.37.2.07","url":null,"abstract":"This historiographical “tour” essay examines the many meanings that have been ascribed to Pernambuco’s “Peddlers’ War” (1710-1711) in nearly 200 years of historical literature. Looking across generations and intellectual paradigms (Marxist, liberal, Brazilian nationalist, and Pernambucan regionalist), it shows that 1710-1711 has stood for a nativist and perhaps a republican movement against the Portuguese, a fracturing between the mercantile bourgeoisie and planter class, or as a symbol of Pernambuco’s historic rebelliousness in the wake of oppression by outsiders. It is intended to investigate the ideas of the intellectual about the approximation between the two countries, taking into consideration the linguistic context in which they were produced. These representations were produced within 1898 and 1913, in a period of rise of Pan-American rhetoric and escalation of US imperialism, under the legitimation of rereadings of the Monroe Doctrine. During the time when Baron of Rio Branco headed the Itamaraty, Mendonca presented to his readers a parameter of comparison between his performance and the guidelines that led the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Relations. This documentation presents population data collected annually through the Catholic Church in various parishes, in our case, we speak of the parish of Santa Luzia do Norte in Alagoas. The geographical space comprised by the account documentation of two scenarios: one rural, linked to the mills and settlements and another more urban related to the central core of the parish. In a complementary way, some aspects about the writing of the referential text and the possible motivations for Marighella to travel to China and to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in the early 1950s will be succinctly discussed. In the seven pages of the 1954 manuscript, written in the first person and in Spanish, Marighella wrote about her personal and partisan trajectory. Because it is safeguarded in the State Archive of Political and Social History of Russia in Moscow, the content of this document is not fully known in Brazil. The discussion is based on two references: the first is the appreciation of the contextual perspective of a work; the second is the relational view between synchrony and diachrony. In this sense, the article both highlights the brand that the two books print in their period, as well as highlights the dialogues they have with the previous historiographical tradition. Em seu texto, e possivel identificar que os argumentos utilizados no documento estavam embasados, em parte, no paradigma corporativista de poder e de sociedade, ainda que o paradigma individualista guiasse toda a reflexao social desde a segunda metade do seculo anterior. Of this set, we pay special attention to 15 merchants listed in a document made by the governor of the captaincy in 1758. We analysed the activities of the group members and their insertion in local society, to show that participation in the slave trade was one of the main elements of differentiation in the trajectory of a trader who reached the top of the mercantile hierarchy in colonial Recife. The consolidation of cattle farms, settlements, and the cultivation of cotton plantations greatly increased the presence of slaves from some parts of Africa, mainly Angola. Nevertheless, there is a lack of studies about the forced penetration of these African slaves and their descendants in the so-called backlands of Pernambuco.
